The whole Pepsi commercial thing reminded me that people always mis-remember the famous flower in the gun barrel photo as being a young woman. It wasn’t. The photo, taken by Bernie Boston, is of George Edgerly Harris III better known by his stage name Hibiscus. He was a member of the San Francisco based radical gay liberation theater troupe the Cockettes. He died of AIDS in 1982 at the time AIDS was still referred to by the name GRID which stood for Gay Related Immuno-Deficiency. The photo was taken at a protest at the Pentagon.

This is one example of the Mandela Effect phenomena, where an iconic moment is reenacted with a hippy woman so many times that people think that’s the story and thus another gay man is written out of history. Thanks for the photo.

Actually both photos were taken on the same day and even at the same protest! October 21st, 1967 both Jan Rose Kashmir and George Edgerly Harris showed up to the Washington peace March to protest the Vietnam war. Both of them got photographed offering flowers to people holding guns. “Flower Power” is the name of the Harris photo and “The Ultimate Confrontation” is this photo staring Kashmir.

And they didn’t invent holding daisies in front of guns either. This was part of the larger Flower Power movement which started in 1965. It involved protestors handing out flowers and balloons and is the origin of the title flower children. By 1966 it was already a popular mode of protest. Here is a picture of flower children giving out flowers are hippie pamphlets two years before Kashmir and Harris were photographed.

Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin organized the flower power protests on the Pentagon in 1967 and planned for most protestors to hand out flowers.They started planning the event in May of that year. Here is a protestor doing the same thing on the same day, but in Virginia instead of D.C
