"Space 4 Art" A throwback on this Thursday to my days at Space 4 Art in San Diego. I lived, worked, played and created at S4A from 2016-2018. Here we have some scenes from the way it was or the way it used to be. Unfortunately greed forced us to tear down the stage you see in the first two photos and then the tiny home in the remaining photos. That stage attempted to kill me twice. The first time I fell through the roof doing a roof repair. My forward momentum stopped me from going through but I was still scraped up a bit. I was a bit more cautious after that. The second time was during deconstruction. We saved nearly everything for the future site. Therefore everything had to be disassembled. This meant reverse engineering something that the brilliant mind of architect Bob Leathers designed and then helped build with a team of other artists (not me, way before my time). This went well and not so well many times over. It was dangerous work, but we got it tore down and over with. Needless to say it was heart breaking and senseless. Not shown in the photos is the ginormous move we undertook. Which involved the merciless deconstruction of around 20 artist studios, the main galleries, kitchen, rest rooms, conference room and office areas. The dreaded "yes, your studio too Paul" came and that did not sit well with me at all. When it was all said and done I got a bitch'n live work studio with a killer view of the city. I was in that studio for a year before moving to Orlando. The Tiny Home project was a fun undertaking to be a part of. This project began long before my time. It is a snapshot of the heart of what S4A plans for San Diego. That is to build a permanent home for San Diego artists on their property off of Market Street. The Tiny Home prototype was built by a group of high school students and their teachers from High Tech High Chula Vista and interns and volunteers from King Chaves High School downtown San Diego. We also had some outside volunteers with leading skill sets and several of us artists including myself who were heavy handed in the operation. Naturally with Bob Leathers at the helm.
