In Retro Matsuri Artists' Alley, we have a background music playlist (burned to a stack of CDs) that's a mix of both popular and obscure music of the 1970s-2000s, anime and video game music, and some fun(?) surprises. Here's a sampler!

It's Staff Meme Week
Hello people of Tumblrland!
We may have slightly... forgotten we had an account here. But we are back!
Let's get caught up on where we are, with 5 weeks left until Retro Matsuri 2026.
Artists and Vendors: applications closed, a great variety of people selected
AMV Contest applications: open
Panel applications: open
Registration: open
Splines: reticulating
We hope to see you there.
@ominous-signs
Look, New Hampshire is kinda unhinged. But we like it that way.
Anyway, Funspot in Laconia, NH, is home to the American Classic Arcade Museum, and while we can't hope to challenge their awesome selection of games, Retro Matsuri does offer a retro arcade of our own: a variety of older consoles and desktop computers to play with. (And Laconia's not far away if you'd like to also take a trip to this ominous sign!)
The thing with amateur local theater is it is almost always bad BUT keeping it alive is the most important thing
The joys of artistic expression cannot be limited to talented people everybody needs it to survive
This is such a hilarious take we should give untalented people who make bad art money you know just because guys
Exactly. Glad you understand π
good art grows from the soil of bad art, but also bad art justifies itself. it's still art
@powerbottombrucespringsteen
I agree, please enjoy. Acrylic on random thrift store found object, randomly selected colors and fonts from an online generator.
This goes for the other arts, too. Got a town band? Go to their cheesy themed concerts. Got a local craft show? Go buy an okay-quality blanket. People don't need to be The Best At Something to be able to do it, people who want to be The Best need somewhere to practice to get there, and your local community should be able to have institutions and events that are their own without feeling inferior about it.

From Homura's POV, the plot of Madoka Magica is kinda 50 First Dates.
Final-Fantasy-themed beer ad? Anime.
Shows by a Chinese studio intended for Chinese audiences? Anime.
Show made by an international collaboration that included an established anime studio and is available on Crunchyroll? Not anime.
MyAnimeList is a useful tool for keeping track of what I've watched or intend to eventually get around to watching, but their definition of "anime" is... interesting and doesn't seem to be consistently applied.

Crunchyroll said it continues to investigate the data breach involving its users' personal information.
PSA: hackers claim to have accessed not only support tickets (which might contain some personal info) but also actual user account data. Watch out for unauthorized purchases and update your login and payment info.
Chobits is worth revisiting for its relevance on the questions of human relationships with AI and how we should treat an AI if it truly did meet the threshold to be "a person".
I've been thinking recently about AMVs, something I've barely ever been into and never tried to do myself, but which I've been having ideas for. And it occurred to me that Spiraling Shape (a song by They Might Be Giants that I'm 99% sure is an allegory for regrettable fads) and the anime adaptation of Uzumaki (a horror manga by Junji Ito about an escalating series of disturbing spiral-based events that I have a vague hunch is an allegory for mass panic) would make a thematically appropriate sick joke of a video together, so I checked whether anyone else had had the same idea, and wow this video using the live-action adaptation is good. It's a crime it has so few views.
(Warning, disturbing images.)
Happy birthday, Mewtwo!

Happy new year!
Exciting news for those following The Best Romcom: Kaguya-sama: Love Is War is actually getting very close to fully adapted. An hour-long TV special premiered today and they also announced a second theatrical movie that will adapt "the last chapters" of the manga (according to its MAL page).
(A commenter on MAL notes that part of the manga focused on Yuu Ishigami is not adapted yet in either of those, leaving open the possibility of some later addition.)
I want to, like, write a physical letter to Aniplex begging for a physical box set of the complete series including movies because I love this show and want to cheer on its characters.
