Inspired by Spiraling Shape
Evening, @tmbgareok (and others).
I recently got a new car that is well and truly mine and will probably be around quite a lot longer than my last one, so I've been customizing it by painting the windows and trying to find fun bumper stickers and stuff.
I searched for a while but couldn't find any tmbg bumper stickers that *really* spoke to me, so I made a couple of my own and wanted to show them off lol
I really like the spiraling shape one, but my mom says the experimental film one is kinda hard to read lol
Anyways, this was all for fun and if you see someone driving around with these bumper stickers it definitely isn't me and is someone else.
Spiraling Shape (They Might Be Giants) TMBG lyrics tend to be open to interpretation, but this one is generally about people getting caught up in something that completely overtakes them to the point of lack of disregard for their bodily or mental well-being, or that of others. "Put out your hands and you fall through the window / And clawing at nothing you drop through the void / Your terrified screams are inaudible drowned / In the spiral ahead and consumed in the shape / The spiraling shape will make you go insane (Everyone wants to see that groovy thing) / But everyone wants to see that groovy thing (Everyone wants to see that thing)" Later, they snap back to normal and act like they always knew it was nothing serious. "And now that you've tried it, you're back to report / That the spiraling shape was a fraud and a fake / You didn't enjoy it, you never believed it / There won't be a refund, you'll never go back" The repetition of the refrain makes clear that the whole thing is just going to happen again, though.
Discord (The Living Tombstone, Eurobeat Brony) I'm fine with changing status quo, but not in letting go / Now the world is being torn apart / A terrible catastrophe played by your symphony / What a terrifying work of art

Spiraling Shape - They Might Be Giants
The spiraling shape will make you go insane
(Everyone wants to see that groovy thing)
But everyone wants to see that groovy thing
(Everyone wants to see that thing)
And nobody knows what it's really like
But everyone says it's great
And they heard it from the spiral in their eyes

Factory Showroom is 23 today! Here’s a stripped-down and somehow eerier performance of “Spiraling Shape” from an appearance on WFMU. Happy birthday, Factory Showroom!

It's about a man who is held on trial. He pleads for an Insanity Defense, claiming that "his brain has claimed its glory over him" and he "has a good heart, albeit insane", which leads to him being sent to the infirmary for electroshock treatment. This is incredibly painful and distressing for him, including lines like "Someone help me understand what's going on inside my mind / Doctor I can't tell if I'm not me" as his mind gets destroyed by it. The tragic irony is that if he was lying about being insane at the trial to get a lighter punishment (and it is commonly agreed that's what happened)… well, after the "treatment" he received, it certainly is not a lie anymore. Adding to the whole Spiral-ness of the song is how creepily surreal it sounds, with the album version of the song starting by playing BACKWARDS before the "normal" version actually starts.
