all the sentences scratched onto vases next to a female figure holding a lyre. all the times a highly interpretive translator intentionally plays fast and loose with the greek and fills in massive lacunae only to be mistaken for a literal translation. there are so many of these kinds of ‘sappho’ fragments.

sappho translations really have the rumi translations problem
