Amphitrite (Αμφιτριτη meaning ‘Encircling Third’) was the goddess queen of the sea, wife of Poseidon, and eldest of the fifty Nereides (sea nymphs) in Greek mythology. When Poseidon first sought Amphitrite’s hand in marriage, she fled his advances, and hid herself away near Atlas in the Ocean stream at the far ends of the earth. Delphin (god of the dolphins) eventually tracked her down and persuaded her to return to wed the sea-king which resulted in the birth of their son Tritôn. Sadly not much else is known about Amphitrite but she does show up in various works of art from the time. In them she wears the robes of a queen, and carries a three-pointed sceptre called a Trident. Hecate (Ἑκάτη meaning ‘Worker from Afar’) was the goddess of magic, witchcraft, the night, moon, ghosts and necromancy in Greek mythology. She was the only child of the Titanes Perses (god of destruction) and Asteria (goddess of shooting stars) from whom she received her power over heaven, earth, and sea. Hecate assisted Demeter (goddess of the grain) in her search for Persephone (goddess of spring), guiding her through the night with flaming torches.
