Back to the matter at hand. I simply fail to see anything revolutionary about the Sanders campaign. Pushing the political slider all the way in one direction doesn’t make you revolutionary, it makes you a radical. It also alienates a large number of Americans in a time when trying to find a middle ground is more important than ever. Pushing the political fader all the way in one direction also isn’t a very unique political idea. Republicans have been doing it for years and they’re better at it than democrats are. You know how scared and disgusted you are by Trump and Cruz? That’s how republicans feel about Sanders.

That said, I’m not telling anybody who they should vote for, only that you should vote.

The year is 1995, congress member Bernie Sanders stands in opposition of a homophobic statement said by Duke Cunningham. Cunningham derisively refers to “homos in the military” to support his argument while (strangely) discussing the Clean Water Act. Sanders, having none of it, quickly rises to the defense of thousands of men and women everywhere. Sanders ire is such that he repeatedly disrespects the Chairman by speaking over him in order to say his piece. [Video Source]

What does this say for Sanders? Well, that’s for you to decide. But to me, it says that for 20+ years strong he has shown his public support for LGBT+ persons everywhere, even in the face of ridicule and disrespect. Unlike some, Sanders has always been vocal about his beliefs concerning the LGBT+ community, and he has always held them. Key word always, and not just when doing so might garner him support for his campaigns. 

BONUS:

People with social status are FINALLY starting to call this shit out, using their fame to call out privilege and injustice where they see it. This is actually a big deal. 

I really wish tumblr would start recognizing small changes. Of course we should strive for better, but systemic change doesn’t happen overnight. NPH is an openly gay man hosting the fucking Oscars. Can we just talk about the fact that two years ago Seth McFarlane hosted, and sang a song about how many actresses had shown their breasts in film—often in depictions of trauma or sexual assault?

Or the fact that there are people out there every day who are working to better recognize POC, LGBT people, and other minorities in the media, who get zero recognition?

Agent Carter—a show with a badass female protag—is probably going to get canceled because no one is watching it.

Parks and Rec—a show about a tiny town in rural Indiana that has one of the most diverse casts I’ve ever seen—gets literally zero recognition on Tumblr other than “haha this show is funny.”

Fresh off the Boat, same thing.

Modern Family—while incredibly white—shows the struggles of immigrants and LGBT families—and again, no recognition. 

How about you get off your fucking high horse, recognize that change takes time but that there are some pretty solid changes happening, and just stop.
