I often see authors refer to the Persian as “Monsieur Khan”, and while it’s technically not wrong in very much the same way it’s not wrong to refer to Raoul as “Monsieur le Vicomte”, I get the distinct impression that many writers mistake “Khan” for a surname when it’s not.

In the Qajar court, certain titles would be used to indicate one’s rank in nobility, “Khan” (or “Emir”) being one of them. Those titles were used after one’s given name (i.e. Nadir Khan). Nadir possess the title of Khan because, in Kay canon, he is a Shahzade, a (distant) relative to the Shah, and therefore a man of imperial blood. “Khan” is a court title, and its female equivalent is “Khanum” (does that ring a bell?).

Last names only came into use in Persia in 1919. All throughout the reign of the Qajar dynasty, people used toponyms (i.e. Tehrani, Isfahani, Mazandarani, etc.) or other such distinctive titles attached to their given name to tell each other apart. Obviously, the French Republic did use surnames for its citizens at the time, and Nadir, being an immigrant, would have to state a surname for himself when he first crossed the border to France, but it is highly unlikely that he would have used his royal rank as his last name.

Assuming that he was born and raised in the province of Mazandaran, on top of being its appointed “Daroga” (sic), he could be “Nadir Mazandarani”. The French would certainly have a lot of fun pronouncing that last name.
