So I was talking to my friend's cat the other day and I asked, "by the way, what do you prefer to be called?" and it said (doing my best to translate here, but certainly missing a lot of nuance) "you mean a name? None. Such are mannish frivolities," and so I said, "what about pronouns?" and it did what I think is roughly the equivalent of scoffing and was like, "speak what words thou pleasest. Thy private usages concern me not," and what's really been fucking me up about it is I don't know (again, missing nuance) whether the switch to the informal second person marked an increase in hostility or familiarity. Like, you'd presume hostility from context but I feel like you can never really tell with cats.
'cargo cult' and 'fetish' are useful concepts that i really wish there were non racist words for
Particularly since the namesake cargo cult wasn't actually a cargo cult!
Like, the whole thing comes from colonial observers seeing Melanesian religious practices—that were themselves a response to colonial disruptions—and misinterpreting their significance based on the presumption that Melanesians must have a superficial and materialistic understanding of the world. And now the thinking error they made up and ascribed to said Melanesians is our word for having a superficial and materialistic understanding of the world.

Anyway another thing about restorative/reformative justice models is that they'll never fully live up to their stated ideals in a system that's otherwise built to enable abuse and create imbalanced power dynamics.
That's why you can't just roughly slap "we should simply forgive people! :D" onto the existing system and expect it to work out. These issues are actually complicated.
You can't just Principle Of Reform And Restorative Justice your way out of a situation where someone has a history of abusing a position of power that they're still in.
You can, in fact, simultaneously acknowledge these two things:
Punitive models of incarceration have worse rates of recidivism than reformist models, and arbitrary enforcement of "tough on crime" laws is a major component of the continued oppression of, for example, Black people in the US
Sometimes there's a person who's got too much power and influence, uses that power to do enormous amounts of harm, and could regain power through their influence if stripped of power. You have to solve that problem, and sometimes the only viable solution is going to be to put them in a cell and throw away the key. In most cases right now, this doesn't even happen to begin with, and so on the few occasions where it does happen, it can't be a priority to attempt to reform those people in particular.
Oh, and also:
Discussions of alternatives to carceral justice are serious political theory that this website treats like a proxy war for fandom nonsense. As such, it's worth pointing out that the answer to the question "should you be obligated to continue supporting an e-celeb who's done harm?" is "there is literally no situation where you, as a private individual simply using the Internet, are morally obligated to go out of your way to interact with any e-celeb in any way whatsoever."

trying to get the funny medieval peasants to try my future dorito and accidentally stumbling onto the communal fencepost hosting one of many rural german cat-mutilating games that will later be a wedge in relations between the urban and agricultural communities, shocking me into a months-long silence
getting served what can only be described as "mold from a random log of fallen wood floating in a stein of watered-down beer" as a gift in return for the doritos and getting an experience that can only be described as "Protestant Ayahuasca"
going south to seek some sort of normalcy which I might disrupt, where in the refuge I am served something which dripped from a statue. I ask what it is. it's from the bones inside, I am told, and it leaks forever, and it brings an ecstatic state
The peasants will occasionally hearken back to you, in years to come, as the strange traveler with the unusually melancholic disposition—in reference to your distress at encountering normal everyday things. Only very rarely do they recall your odd bag of fried pasta with what could best be described as a petty-aristocrat amount of seasoning.
If that, honestly.

The problem with the idea of the soul is, how does it get through doors? Your body goes in and then there's this weird transition and then you're on the other side of the door and like ... does your soul just *know* to move to your new location? Does it stay behind and they have to send a new soul down? Is this the origin of the door ghost epidemic?
does your understanding of a soul somehow divorce it from the body?
is your understanding of the thing that makes us alive somehow not connected to you as a person?
do you seriously think that if you lost your soul and got someone else's you would still be you?
why, in what universe, in what mindset- would a door ever be any kind of hindrance to something that lives inside of you???
You can't separate the concept of self from which side of the door you're on without opening the door to the possibility of opening the door to find an identical version of yourself on the other side that's already you because the only difference between them and you is that they're on the other side of the door and that's irrelevant (if you separate the concept of the self from which side of the door you're on) to the concept of the self!
... I think you're probably maybe confusing them with mirrors?
#but if the only difference is the side of the door#how can we open it?#wed both be pulling or pushing with the exact same strength leaving the door where it is
oh this one is easy you just move the hinges to the middle
Fascinating—you mean to say this would be some sort of multiple door that could open in both directions at once? With proper balancing I'm sure such a door could even close again with the same direction of rotation, allowing parties to move through it in both directions at once. Now wait just a minute...
I think I've just had an idea that's going to "revolutionize" the entrances to shopping malls everywhere!

WHAT is the first one supposed to be? It looks like 'piecing between meals' to me, but that can't be what it says, right?
It does in fact say “piecing between meals” and it refers to snacking
I'm more struck by the fact that the progression set forth here implies that laudanum and cocaine are less concerning that spicing your food.

It's fun when the robot character in the sci-fi show gets cut in half because nobody working on this type of media knows anything about robotics and you never know what you're going to find inside. Green printed circuit boards? Meat and viscera, but like in a weird colour? Just a shitload of goo?
I especially like it when the robot appears to have realistic musculature which operates via contraction, suggesting some sort of fluid-driven or shape-memory-based actuation, and then it gets dismembered and a bunch of random gears and sprockets go flying everywhere.
You're a sci-fi robot who just got cut in half by the Big Bad (don't worry, you'll get better). What's inside you?
Printed circuit boards (blinking lights optional)
Gears and sprockets
Endless bundles of wire
Some sort of translucent crystal
Meat and viscera in a weird colour
Random geometric shapes
The cut is mirror-smooth, like I was one solid mass of metal
It looks like... car parts?
I'm actually mostly hollow
Just a shitload of milky goo
Other (specify)
Cheese sandwich
Bellows and membranes, brazen armature, steam and oils and glycol media spurt out of severed hoses and bladders, catgut lines whose cut ends jerk and spasm into the cavity as involuntary contractions fail to pull them taut. You know, that sort of thing.
Ye knowe eek, that in forme of speche is chaunge With-inne a thousand yeer, and wordes tho That hadden prys, now wonder nyce and straunge Us thinketh hem; and yet they spake hem so, And spedde as wel in love as men now do.
chaucer, Troilus and Criseyde c. 1380
glossary: eek also and even tho at the time prys great value wonder a cause for astonishment nyce stupid spedde succeeded
You know the form of language, too, can change. Within a thousand years, even the words that were most precious then, seem strange and foolish to us; yet they spoke them so and did no worse in love than we now do.
how does "wordes [...] wonder nyce and straunge Us thinketh hem" work? both us and hem are oblique (hem might be specifically dative but i dont think that adds any sense), thinketh has singular agreement but judging from "methinks" the word seems to have had a similar construal as "seem" once, so "us" is probably the semantic subject. still if it did work like "seem" you would expect the grammatical subject (in nominative and to be agreed with) to be the anaphoric "they" (the words).
also just to be sure, wonder is an adverb and not a noun here right?
I take "wonder" to be the subject, modified by "nyce and straunge." That is: "now (a) silly and strange wonder (to) us seems them." Odd way around to do it, though. Maybe it's to permit the ambiguity of which of "us" or "hem" is the direct and indirect object. Perhaps when wonder nice and strange us thinks them, so too the like them thinks us.

Got a new idea for a new Table Top Role Playing Game that I'm realizing is increasingly an excuse to write prose explaining the rules in the voice of an in-universe forefather of the player characters who is President Shinra if he were Mr. Hades if he were Joyce Messier.
you guys do realise walking doesn't actually move you anywhere right? it just destroys you entirely and places a perfect copy of you right in front of where you were standing
