corn snakes are not lap snakes; give them anything less than 100% of your attention for 15 seconds and they’ve gone over your shoulder, through your blankets, rearranged their tank, texted your ex, hailed a cab, and stolen the declaration of independence

I haven’t posted about Nick in a while so here’s a tiny blep from him 😍
Nvm guys that video of Peggy is canceled bc this one is better.
The new girl! More details later, but this snake is really personally significant to me.

I hate to tell you this, but this corn snake is really obese. If you want to tell me their setup and feeding schedule I’ll be able to help you make some changes to get them back to a healthy weight. :)
Hi! Thanks for your input!
I actually just fed him his largest meal this year (2 small rats) so he can beef up before hibernation. The last time I took him to the vet, which was a couple months ago, he was in a healthy weight bracket. I’m aware that that it’s very easy for captive snakes to get obese, so I try to feed him light meals, alternating between 1 small rat one week, then 1 small rat every other week, as my busy work schedule sometimes can’t accommodate regular handling and exercise.
Plus he isn’t all level here, his body is much closer to the camera than his head is. I check his transverse body shape regularly and he still has, what I would call, an trapezoidal shape, and I try to make sure his body is stream lined with his tail. He does have a small divet where his spine is, but his shape is not bulbous or round, at least not that I can tell, and a lot of pictures I’ve looked up of corn snakes in a healthy weight do have a dorsal divet similar to his. He is a bit chunky, I agree, but I wouldn’t call him obese, or morbidly so. The thick part worthy of concern is also the thickest part of his body, where I wager the rats are by now, and he is pooping regularly.
He’s currently in a 40 Liter tub, 3 hides, one hot, and I get him out once or twice a week if I can. Like I said, busy work schedule, but I do what I can.
Quick question for you, are you a licensed vet? Thanks for your input, have a great one!
I wasn’t going to respond further on this tonight but there are, quite frankly, many things in your post that have me very concerned and I feel it will be to your benefit for me to explain them to you in a more timely manor. I’m going to try to break this down point by point but it might get a little wordy and I hope you understand. Two small rats is not ever going to be a healthy meal for a corn snake. They should be eating mice, or if you must feed them rats it should be sparingly and spaced out for longer periods of time. If your vet told you this is a healthy animal you need a new vet, end of story. A corn snake should look like a loaf of bread shape-wise. Muscular, without a pronounced (or indented) spine, a neck, and no hips. Here are some examples of adult corns with healthy body conditions.
(my corn snake Tabasco. Adult male. Notice the muscle definition.)
(here’s one I pulled off of morph market (source) Adult female.)
A healthy adult corn should be fed a meal that is about as wide as the snake’s girth every 10-14 days. The corn that belongs to me I posted above eats a small m.ouse every 10 days. People have a tendency to over feed corns (and snakes in general) and it can be hard to understand what a healthy body condition is for common pet snakes because of this.
I want you to understand that I’m not trying to call you out or insult you, I have a great love for these animals and I hate the see them in bad shape when they should be active and inquisitive snakes.
As far as his enclosure goes, if you can afford to upgrade to something in the 4′x2′x2′ range I would highly highly recommend it.
The quip about whether or not I’m a licensed vet is unnecessarily. I’m not. You don’t have to be a vet to recognize that a snake is obese and I thought I’d point you in the right direction since you clearly care about your pet.
Wow, thanks for all that, I appreciate it a lot! I remember now hearing about corns needing mice because their fat content is a lot lower than a rat's, but I tried to switch him back over to mice and it didn't go very well... Hes so picky about eating only rats now, can you suggest a way to make the transition back to mice a little easier? I know I can rub the mouse with dirty rat bedding, but Maraschino is very clever and idk if he would fall for it. I mean, he'll eat anything I put in front of him if he's hungry enough, but I don't like the idea of starving him just to get him to eat.
But now that I think about it, should I fast him and exercise him between meals (now that it's getting colder where I am I'd say maybe wait a month between every mouse?) to try and help him lose that weight a bit quicker? Are there any ways I can get him to exercise more often while he's in his enclosure? Like fill some of the empty space with tubes, take him outside for an hour and let him slither around, etc? I've put him in a box filled with tubes before when I thought he was getting overweight, and it worked a little, should I do that a few times a week? I'll see if I have room for a shelf or something in my apartment. There is not a lot of space where I am right now so he's kind of stuck under my bed 😔 I know he needs more space to slither about, I just don't know what to do with limited space and funds.
I don't think he's got hips yet, but he does look a lot thicker than these snakes. He DOES need thinning up.
I can't believe I've made my handsome boy a fat slob!! Thank you so much for taking time out of your day to fact check me, I appreciate it a lot. You've reminded me not to shave years off of my corn snake's life just to make sure he's well fed, thanks a bunch!

Because sometimes what you need most is to enjoy the strangely satisfying sight of a perfectly coiled, perfectly content snake.

basically a kitten with scales
Im not sure if people know this, but this is reposted from a animal zoologist from instagram, I hate how everyone is saying that he is “irresponsible” he has been working will reptiles for a long time so he knows what he is doing.
Then he should be ashamed of himself for baiting an obviously terrified baby animal and castigated for posting it onto a platform that doesn’t really work for education or discussion like insta. It’s not just irresponsible, it’s mean. Just because you’ve been working with reptiles a long time doesn’t mean that what you’re doing is fair to the animal.

How big do ball pythons get? I've looked up photos but there's a lot of difference of opinion on the basic "fully grown adult" size. I want a ball python some day, but I am unsure if I will be able to provide a large enough enclosure for their adult size - large enough for climbing opportunities and enrichment and all that good stuff, that is, not just their "basic" needs. What are your thoughts?
Average ball pythons are 3.5 feet and around 1600g or so :) There are some very very large ones that are 5 feet and 4000g, however those are incredibly rare. A good average cage size is 4 foot by 3 foot wide by 18-20 inches tall for an adult :)
Mina’s breeder’s foundation female is huuuuuge. She was over 6000g before breeding this year, and she’s more than six feet long. That’s her in front of stacks of 3 foot vivs.
There’s also a locality- Volta- that gets HUGE. Voltas are found near the Volta River in Ghana and the females can hit 8000g and get to be 6-7 feet long.
4500 g Volta female in the hands of a 6 ft dude. Slight forced perspective but…
Same guy, different snake

Holy crap look at the size of that head!!! I wonder if that can be passed on through breeding, that is crazy!
Holy shit
Who is it? Yiss hello I m snek , what do for you?
