Blog 3
Well this is it, the last official blog post for this project.
What was my intention with this project:
To get better at typography and layout.Ā Pairing typefaces, creating hierarchy in layout.Ā Making type respond to my illustration style.
What was the problem?Ā What were unexpected challenges:
Lots of writing and proof reading.Ā I donāt like those tasks so it was difficult to force myself to do them.Ā Often I found myself staring at my screen while making very little progress.Ā Other times I just avoided working on it all together.Ā I have to hold myself more accountable.Ā I scheduled lots of tasks related to this project, and going forward to I need to actually stick to my schedule and work on things that Iāve set the time aside for.
What changed about this project in the process:
We all love the word āpivotā now, but I donāt think the word accurately describes anything I did on this project. I grew to have a deeper understanding of type and received a taste of what it may be like to freelance and have to manage myself as worker.Ā I learned how to be appreciative of feedback when I received it, but also that I have to be confident in my own decisions as a designer.Ā Sometimes you just gotta print everything and mark it up in red pen.Ā Looking is an active process, so is design.Ā Even process that require lots of production and systems, require the designer to actively use their brain and critical thinking through out the process.Ā
Where is the project now:
I have more than a strong foundation, I have a layout and a system that works, I have a system for illustrations.Ā I have a lot of copy editing and proofing done.Ā I have a lot of illustration done.
Whatās next:
Keep illustrating, finish the cover, table of contents.Ā Proofread and print prototype and send to print.Ā I hope to have it sent to Blurb 05/19 or 05/20
Research & Discovery: My research this Quarter started with analyzing Page Layouts in existing cookbooks and recipes. The process made me more keenly aware of hierarchy in layout, as well as the different typefaces used. Ā
Process: After researching layouts and typefaces, I revisited my mood board. I realized that a lot typefaces used in food packaging, advertisements, and features wide type in heavy weights.Ā The cookbooks I was most excited about used a sanserif typeface.Ā I decided on Jubilat Black for titles, headlines, and large chunks of information.Ā I think the slab serif makes it look warm, casual, and fun.Ā Body type is Trade Gothic.Ā I like how lean the characters are and find it a nice balance to Jubilat.
Solution: As part of portfolio prep this quarter, we met with alumni to discuss work and get feedback.Ā I showed my progress for this recipe book and got lots of specific feedback about layouts and hierarchy.Ā I agree with what most of the feedback was, which was that I need to use color/size weight of type to distinguish different kinds of information.Ā Now that text is flowed in I will be working more with tweaking that.Ā Another thing Iāve been told a lot, and something that has been an ongoing theme throughout my two years in this program is that I need to make type respond to my illustration style.Ā Ā
Next steps: The next step is to align everything to a baselline grid, find/replace, get images in, consider feedback and what action to take, develop a system for ingredients vs steps, settle on a title, and start blocking out compositions for cover design.
Spring Quarter 2019, Blog Post 1

OH I also wanted to mention that Iām inspired by 100 Days of Fonts by Do-Hee Kim.Ā Itās such a great project.Ā We had two assignments last year that referenced this project, and I feel like I didnāt take advantage of the opportunity enough.Ā Iām just not naturally adventurous when it comes to type, so I want to challenge myself to do small, quick type explorations this quarter.Ā Will I do one every day?Ā Probably not!Ā But Iām going to try to set up a space to do it.Ā Even if it doesnāt happen online and only happens in my own Indesign files.

Spring Quarter 2019
I decided to continue my recipe book project in Spring Quarter.Ā I didnāt get anywhere near where I wanted with typography.Ā Ā
radish is looking good <3
Test prints and revisions
Today I did a lot of work on illustrations but I also wanted to see what things would look like printed out.Ā You may recognize some of the drawings from previous weeks.Ā I imported the line art to photoshop and painted digitally.Ā Going back to my moodboard, youāll see I selected three colors at the begining of the quarter.Ā The Blue and Red were selected because of their use on the Schools website, and I selected the Yellow because I thought it would be a more appetizing color for illustrations of food, haha.Ā I have been a painter for 15 years, and have taken color theory, but I was not thinking about this is a primary color pallet. But itās really great, because even though it wasnāt my initial intention, I think it makes the illustration very warm and vibrant.Ā Ā
Here you can see the pallete two ways, one with a lighter touch, and the other with the color built a up a little heavier.Ā Itās not unlike CMYK colors!
More illustrations!
Beer Label
So in exchange for students designing a new beer label, a local brewery donates a few kegs to our Portfolio show.Ā Thereās a little bit of my design.Ā I love hand letting lol.Ā Iām not posting the full thing or the brewery because I donāt want to give away any info about an as of yet, unannounced/unreleased flavor.Ā Ā
Week 8?Ā Oh Jeeze
Daily Blog Posts right???Ā The One time I make a blog post last week itās not even about Special Topics.Ā :p
I checked in with my instructor this morning.Ā Iām definitely behind on where I wanted to be with this project, but I told him where I was at and what Iām planning.Ā I think this isnāt going to be a final printed book, which is really frustrating, but I will try to print some spreads or sections and put together a presentation for the end of the quarter that shows my work in progress.
Weāve got a week over spring break so I hope I can keep working on stuff then!Ā
Anyway, Hereās what I worked on this weekend.Ā Planning out my daily assignments and homework to finish the last three weeks of the quarter!
The post it notes are my daily homework plan, and they get fewer towards the end because Iām not sure how those weeks will go so far so I want to be able to move things around.Ā I should be relatively on track for getting this weekās tasks done though! (this is my uh... personal white board at home.Ā I got it at the beginning of the year when I foolishly thought Iād be working on a lot of UX design this year.Ā ĀÆ\_(ć)_/ĀÆ )
To get everything done this week, I decided to use my small whiteboard at school to make an hourly schedule for myself:
Itās actually helping pretty well!
So today I have mostly ended up focusing on setting up paragraph styles for the document in InDesign.Ā Iām through the first two sections so far!
I think thereās a lot more that has to happen before this is really reflective of my mood board, but honestly I think todayās work so far has been moving at a pretty good pace.Ā I just have to keep the energy up!
Like my instructor said today:Ā Keep your head down, and get the work done!

I typically hate making moodboards but this moodboard for my Ghost gig poster turned out pretty good!
(from left to right, top to bottom) Figure with Meat by Francis Bacon Unsure, but Probably Burges Hall A portion from the Album Cover for Infestissumam Grucifix ft Leviathan Cross in Circle (I canāt find the source for this! Ā At all! Ā ugh!) Lyrics from Cirice in Goudy Old Style in off white Color swatches in deep purple, orange/rust/gold, blood red, and antique white V The Hierophant from the Rider-Waite Tarot Deep Forest Saint by @dappermouthā Coronation of the Virgin by Diego VelĆ”zquez A Portion of the āA Pale Horse Named Deathā Tour Poster by David N. Brinley
A little bit of progress, every single day! Here's a good radish I drew!
Week ??? Update
Ok, letās get frank on this blog.
Iāve probably started... a dozen.. or so?Ā blogs in my life.Ā Usually pretty much diaries with varying degrees of anonymity to spill my guts into the void that is the internet.Ā But thatās not really important
But, in setting out to create a blog for class, for a semi-professional project, Iāve suspended a lot of that frank honestly that compels me to blog at all.
And so, clearly I just havenāt blogged at all.
I also got sick/snowed in and just havenāt been working on this project!Ā I havenāt been talking to my teachers!Ā Iām in well over my head now!
So I made a rather depressing midterm presentation to send to my instructor last week.Ā I outlined what I plan to do the rest of this quarter.Ā Mostly
Work on this project daily
Communicate to my instructors
Blog daily
so far I failed at that too!Ā But letās get it back on track.Ā I canāt see the future, I donāt know how this project is going to end.Ā All I can do is take things one step at a time from here on out.Ā So this is my intention to shift the focus of this blog into less of a sterile project report and more into a living and breathing project notebook.Ā I am going to just post everything, and youāll see some run off from my other classes because Iām in over my head with them too.Ā This is where the rest of my SCCA life is going to play out, and honestly Iām tired of not-telling everyone every thought that enters my head, so if you follow this blog, youāre going to see it.Ā Ā

Week 2/3 Update
This has been a weird week.Ā We didnāt have class monday due to the holiday, so I did my best to work from home.Ā Ā
My flat plan turned from something that looks like this:
to this:
This also gives me a much better idea of what/how many illustrations I need to work on.Ā Itās small, but the yellow section will feature illustration, with sections being marked by full bleed illustrations.Ā The blue is body text, and itās difficult to see, but green will denote headlines and titles.
I began working on illustrations but Iām concerned my style is too rigid and sterile at this point.Ā Iām hoping going back in with pen or with digital ink will liven them up a bit.Ā Ā
this is an example of a poster illustration I was doing for another class, but I feel like it was a lot more successful than these, though I donāt think Iāll know for sure till I get more pieces laid in and really create a pattern with them.Ā Ā
I think I need to do a lot more, and work faster.Ā And work on a grid.Ā Ā
Inaugural Blog Post (Week One)
So hereās whatās up with this blog:
Who: Erin Billings, A Graphic Design Student
What: A blog for Special Topics, a self directed project.Ā This one is a cookbook.Ā Ā
When: Winter Quarter 2019
Where: Seattle
Why: Because itās a class requirement. Because it will help me document my process, progress, and practice communicating my ideas.Ā Ā
So my intention was to create a youtube series where I talk about this project with the intention of simultaneously improving my presentation skills, but that idea hasnāt been so compatible with my schedule this week.
But hereās what I have for my Cook Book:
Iāve established a moodboard and visual direction, narrowed down my font selection, decided on book size and printer, created a rough flat plan denoting sections, set up my document, and started flowing text in.
I lot of my influence is from Bon Apetit; Alice Pattullo and Lucy Engelman especially!Ā I am also influenced by other illustrators.
Last year, we were assigned the task ofĀ ārebrandingā our program, so my typography is influenced by the decisions our class made while working on that project.Ā Proxima Nova was the brand font that was selected, but I thought Proxima Soft suited a lively fun tone for a cookbook.Ā Some captions and call outs will be in Felt Tip Roman, another type face by Mark Simonson.Ā Glyphs and rules shown here are from Adorn by Laura Worthington. The red and blue color scheme is also influenced from the rebranding assignment.Ā The yellow is a new addition, as I thought it would be a more appealing color for food illustrations.Ā Though not my first priority, this also gives me a primary color palette, and options for creating secondary colors.Ā Ā
