a good thread
I agree with all of this. But! I think it is also important to recognize that there are subgenres where it is significantly harder to find certain things, and it's actively unhelpful to readers to pretend that you can just find whatever type of book you want to read if you just know how to look for it, especially if you are sticking to trad publishing.
It is possible to find both sapphic SFF and M/M fantasy. It is significantly harder to find, say, aro urban fantasy. Or trans romantic suspense. Or intersex mystery.
A lot of the advice above only really works for trad published or popular books and for identities/subgenres/content that aren't too niche.
So here's some advice if the advice above isn't working for you (either because you can't find books with what you want or because the books you are finding don't end up being the vibe you want), from someone who reads a few hundred books a year:
Find websites or lists dedicated to the specific thing you are looking for. They will generally have more variety and will post you to examples that don't show up in regular rec lists. (ex: aro book recs, ace book recs, intersex #ownvoices database, sapphic books). Goodreads lists can (sometimes) also be your friend.
Get comfortable reading self-published and small press books. Trad publishing has its blind spots.
Check Reddit for recommendations
Start figuring out what it is specifically that you like and then start making your searches more specific. This can be subgenre (if you want urban fantasy, you're rarely going to find it just searching "fantasy"), tropes, plot devices, vibes, etc.
Look at the "readers also bought" on Goodreads/Amazon, similar books on Storygraph, etc. if you read a book you like. Even if you don't end up reading the one you click on, it can show you similar authors (similar to looking at the blurb on a cover), especially because far fewer books have blurbs now.
Check out the Literature Map for similar authors.
KICK THE CAN!
Let’s play the biggest game of kick the can on the internet.
To kick the can, reblog it. I wanna see how long this can go on for.
the oldest reblogs for this post that i can find are from january 2nd of 2013. this can has been getting kicked around tumblr for almost 13½ years now
And yet somehow this is my first time kicking it!
There’s a lot of stuff from scifi that eventually came true but it turned out that nobody liked them very much or they became very niche.
Flying cars for example. We did it! Literally nobody wants this though.
Meal in a pill? Well we didn’t get that exactly but we do have Soylent and Huel which are mostly just used by gym bros and people who care more about convenience than enjoying their food.
Remote jobs and school? It exists. Sometimes that’s good but it doesn’t work for everything.
Virtual reality? Yeah. Most people don’t like it and it makes some people sick if they use it but it’s got its niche.
Brain chips? Really useful for some disabled people. The rest of us don’t really want the internet in our brains though tbh.
Robot dogs? Turns out they work for the police. Whoops.
some people on the internet have only been on here for five minutes
i will never get over this one i’m afraid

Whenever pearlrose is discussed it surprises me that… people are not more open minded that romantic relationships can be 'serious' in different ways! They think exclusivity then moving in together then marriage and babies are how you get serious because that's the template for most.
Like, Rose may not have been monogamous or had a baby with Pearl, but they literally gave up everything they knew and fought a war just to build a new life together in a new planet and lived together for milennia. That's not a casual thing! That's a life changing commitment - because it's not like Rose or Pearl could ever back out of that. They couldn't spend two years together then go back to their old lives. They decided to take the plunge and tie their lives in a way that couldn't be fully undone even if they wanted to.
People see this easily with Rose and Greg because having a baby is a more 'usual' way people see to tie your lives together in a way that couldn't be fully undone even if they wanted to. But she did it with Pearl too! It just wasn't in the usual way.
THANK YOU FOR THESE TAGS
I just keep imagining if these were real people. Like imagine if some poor kid just started a YouTube channel vlogging his life and people were so fucking negative every time his mom brought up his dead mom and how much she loved her. Or every time the dad is kind everyone says they understand why the dead mom chose the dad and the other mom is right fucking there.
ways to get Rose to physically fight someone 101
Really enjoying the scritches
write it anyway even if you think it’s bad. a badly written fic is still better than a nonexistent fic.
I want to add that I have read some fic that I felt were bad but they had something about them - story, theme, a specific moment, etc. - that was so interesting or chewy that I think about it to this day, even years later.
So what if you're not someone's next great author? You could also haunt their dreams and nightmares simultaneously, and be the ghost in their daydreams. Don't ever give them peace.
trying to create an ebay account to sell smthn and tell me why I can't use my REAL LEGAL LAST NAME because it includes "dick" which ebay considers offensive
BUT THEN IN THEIR MISREPRESENTATION POLICY THEY SAY YOU CAN'T COLLECT MONEY TO A BANK ACCOUNT THAT'S NOT IN YOUR BUSINESS OR LEGAL NAME. BUT MY LEGAL NAME INCLUDES DICK, WHICH YOU CONSIDER OFFENSIVE.
the sanitization of the internet is so fucking stupid we live in the stupidest time
if you call a meme fascist people will defend it by saying we can't culturally defeat fascism by letting them have everything they claim for themselves and the meme in question is "reject modernity embrace tradition"

We were covering T.S. Eliot in class once and my professor quoted “This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but a whimper” then said “What does a whimper sound like? Can anyone give me a whimper?” and I whimpered. I was the only person in the class who fucking whimpered.
