One of those timeless books that can change the reader's worldview, even politically.

To have a clear vision of gangmastering on the skin of migrants in the countryside, even in our countries, of refugees trying to cross the Mediterranean on a rubber dinghy or land borders hidden under a truck, of Mexican illegal immigrants trying to enter the USA, of the condition of refugees, perhaps Afghans, due to the disaster caused by Westerners.

Uno di quei libri senza tempo che possono cambiare la visione del lettore, anche politicamente.

Per avere una visione chiara del caporalato sulla pelle dei migranti nelle campagne, anche nei nostri paesi, dei rifugiati che tentano di attraversare il Mediterraneo su un gommone o le frontiere terrestri nascosti sotto un camion, degli immigrati messicani che cercano di entrare illegalmente negli USA, della condizione dei profughi, magari afghani, a causa del disastro provocato dall’Occidente.

A stark reflection on labor, inequality, and awareness. The photo is inspired by the factory scene from Charlie Chaplin’s Modern Times, in which man becomes dehumanized by merging with the machinery, reduced to a mere cog in the production system.

Employees, even at the highest levels, are merely tools for someone who deprives them of their individual freedom. During working hours, they follow orders, becoming nothing more than cogs in the production machine. It’s true, freedom exists: nothing prevents a worker from trying the path of entrepreneurship. But not everyone starts from the same point. Some inherit companies, while others, born into disadvantaged families, end up working for them because they face immense obstacles to build something of their own. There are young people who, even without knowing the language of business, ask themselves why not try, why not create and sell something, free from bosses and imposed schedules. Even those raised in an environment where they are taught that blue-collar work is the only path may feel the spark of rebellion and long for a different journey. Some are born with the spirit to think for themselves; others only understand once someone opens their eyes. And then there are those who simply cannot see beyond.

Is ignorance and unawareness a blessing or a curse? Is it better to remain blind and live peacefully, or to see the truth and live with the burning fury inside?

Un crudo riflesso sul lavoro, le disuguaglianze e la consapevolezza. La foto si ispira alla scena della fabbrica di Tempi Moderni di Charlie Chaplin, in cui l’uomo viene disumanizzato fondendosi con i macchinari, ridotto a un semplice ingranaggio del sistema produttivo.

I dipendenti, anche ai livelli più alti, sono soltanto strumenti nelle mani di chi li priva della libertà individuale. Durante l’orario di lavoro, eseguono ordini, diventando nulla più che ingranaggi della macchina produttiva. È vero, la libertà esiste: nulla impedisce a un lavoratore di tentare la via dell’imprenditoria. Ma non tutti partono dallo stesso punto. Alcuni ereditano aziende, mentre altri, nati in famiglie svantaggiate, finiscono a lavorare per loro perché affrontano ostacoli enormi nel costruire qualcosa di proprio. Ci sono giovani che, pur senza conoscere il linguaggio del business, si chiedono: perché non provare, perché non creare e vendere qualcosa, liberi da capi e orari imposti? Anche chi è cresciuto in un ambiente in cui si insegna che il lavoro manuale è l’unica via può sentire la scintilla della ribellione e desiderare un percorso diverso. Alcuni nascono con lo spirito di pensare con la propria testa; altri lo capiscono solo quando qualcuno apre loro gli occhi. E poi ci sono quelli che semplicemente non riescono a vedere oltre.

Watching, listening, doing... we pretend to live. Bright screens, crowded rooms, deafening music. We surround ourselves with noise, images, and distractions. Not to live, but to fill the emptiness.

We watch a show while the person we love sits beside us, yet feels so far away. We dance in the crowd without exchanging a single true word. We pass the time avoiding time, pretending silence doesn't exist.

And so, life slips away...

Not because there’s nothing to say, but because we lack the strength to try. Not because there’s no one to love, but because we’re afraid to be seen.

And one day, when the screens go dark, when the music stops, we won’t be able to turn back and live for real.

Let’s live, now. With our eyes, with our voice, with our soul. Before it’s too late.

Guardare, ascoltare, fare… fingiamo di vivere. Schermi luminosi, stanze affollate, musica assordante. Ci circondiamo di rumore, immagini e distrazioni. Non per vivere, ma per riempire il vuoto.

Guardiamo uno spettacolo mentre la persona che amiamo è seduta accanto a noi, eppure sembra così lontana. Balliamo nella folla senza scambiarci una sola parola vera. Passiamo il tempo evitando il tempo, fingendo che il silenzio non esista.

E così, la vita scivola via…

Non perché non ci sia nulla da dire, ma perché ci manca la forza per provarci. Non perché non ci sia nessuno da amare, ma perché abbiamo paura di essere visti.

E un giorno, quando gli schermi si spegneranno, quando la musica finirà, non potremo tornare indietro e vivere davvero.

Film Ending (1999) In David Fincher’s movie, the protagonist (Edward Norton) realizes that Tyler Durden is a hallucination and tries to stop him.

However, he fails to prevent Project Mayhem’s final plan from unfolding. After shooting himself in the mouth to "kill" Tyler, he sees Marla enter the room and takes her hand. As the city lights up with explosions, buildings collapse, and financial systems are destroyed.

👉 The movie seems to suggest that the rebellion against the system has succeeded, with an almost romantic sense of destruction and rebirth.

Book Ending (1996)

In Chuck Palahniuk’s novel, the sequence is similar up to the final confrontation between the protagonist and Tyler.

However, Project Mayhem’s plan fails because the protagonist has sabotaged the explosives, making them ineffective. After shooting himself to eliminate Tyler from his mind, he wakes up in a psychiatric hospital, believing he is in paradise. But the nurses and doctors reveal themselves as Project Mayhem members, telling him they are waiting for him to recover so they can "carry on with the plan."

👉 The book’s ending is more ambiguous and unsettling: there is no clear victory for the protagonist, and the system remains intact. The cycle of violence seems destined to continue.

📌 Fun fact: Palahniuk has stated that he prefers the movie’s ending over the one in his book. 😅
