LMAOO THIS MADE ME LAUGH 😭 it’s a very common question, and I’m happy to talk ab it so thanks for asking!! However this is still a miraculous news blog and I wanna do a lengthy explanation for fun so all that will be under the cut to not take up more space than I already have lmao.
Basically, the NY Knicks are the New York Men’s basketball team in the National Basketball Association, or the NBA!! (Technically we also have another team, the Brooklyn Nets, but they originally started as a New Jersey team and I’ve never forgotten 😤).
Anywho, the way the NBA works is all the USA west coast teams and all the USA east coast teams compete in conference games on their respective coasts, and the winners from each competes against each other in the finals. Here’s the bracket of what that ended up looking like below:
To win after reaching the finals, your team needs to win 4 finals games out of 7. As such, the ideal is for your team to win four games in a row, aka winning in 4 games only, hence the phrase “Knicks in Four (games)”.
This was the og mantra, but then after winning two games we lost one (bc trump cursed Madison Square Garden……..but anyway), so the chant shifted to “Knicks in five”, since obviously it had become impossible to win in four games and we wanted the next best thing. Well, Knicks in five happened, we got the championship title for the first time since 1973, and I cried.
As a little bonus explanation, the reason this win was so important was because being a Knicks fan had lowkey become a humiliation ritual, not only because we, again, hadn’t won a chip since 1973, but we also hadn’t even made it to the fucking finals since 1999 😭 It’s to the point us sucking gets made fun of a LOT in media, two prominent (animated) examples being in Madagascar and Soul:
What was different this time around though was Jalen Brunson, the MVP, plays like a beast and had also agreed to take a pay cut to bring in some of his friends + build a really fantastic team, so yeah we did that shit!!! The city is electric rn, and I’m going to the victory parade on Thursday so pray I make it out alive 🥲

This is a scene from a story that I’ve had in my head for quite a long time and that I may draw some day.
