Itās been a long time...
Oh dear, it has been quite awhile. How are all of you doing? If youāre unaware, Iām in the process of making my main blog @the-dangerous-mute-lunatic active again. Which means that this blog will also be returning to an active state! Similar to my other blog, this one will be going through a reset since itās been awhile since Iāve touched any rps or anything. If you wish to continue a rp, let me know and we can start a new thread. If not, feel free to interact again through asks or what not!
Thank you all for being so patient while I took my year long nap.
Warm-up with my oc Quinn. Gave her a bit of a redesign.
Carolines eyes seemed to shift away when she realized her own outburst, yet none of her words were brushed off or said to be just that- words. It was obvious she meant what she was saying. Every word was true and from the heart.
āK2. No.ā
Caroline got down on her knees, reaching out to grab K2s shoulders and look her in the eyes. āThis is not my life. This is YOURS. You need to learn how to live your own life. Find your own purpose, find what you want to do. I am not going to live your life for you.ā The feeling of her fingers digging into the cloth of K2s jacket became more apparent, the more passionate she grew.
āI am not your boss. Or your leader or your CEO or anything like that. I am yourā¦FRIEND. And Iām worried for you. I want you to be happy, but I⦠I canāt do that for you. You need to find your own path.ā
Caroline let out a sigh, standing up and moving to the other chair. One arm was crossed over her body and she appeared thoughtful. āā¦I think today went well⦠Come back tomorrow. I can give you a haircut if youād like.ā
In the days and weeks that passed, K2 made sure that she had never been as normal as she was now. Ā From the moment she woke up to the moment she came home at night, she was everything Aperture had made her to be. She walked with shoulders squared and eyes at full attention. She kept her face covered with her bandana, her appearance and menacing as she could possibly make it. Ā For every training chamber she entered, she gave it ten times more effort than it needed. She worked herself to the bone, because that was normal. That was the appearance of an ALPHA unit who had been scared straight by the scar on her face, that was what GLaDOS wanted to see. And so K2 gave it to her. But at night? Ā Every night K2 wondered if Pine would be able to visit. Sometimes, sheād get her hopes up for nothing, and merely spend the evening licking her wounds from the day and sleeping alone. Ā But on the lucky days, she was met by an android- occasionally blind- sneaking in to her room. Ā And her heart soared. It didnāt really matter what they did, even if they just lay on the bed together and talked, or if K2 got a good chuckle out of trying to make sure Pine didnāt trip over her own feet. No matter what they were doing, it was something. It wasnāt fighting, or training, or working herself until she couldnāt move. It was soft, and gentle, and K2 felt happy. She wasnāt sure if she had felt that before she met Pine, but now she knew she couldnāt get enough. Of course, that wasnāt to say that she only wanted to spend their evenings together sitting around idle. It was good to relax, but K2 was deadset on making sure that they did more with each other than simply lazily talking about nothing or sleeping. Ā And so that was how she ended up where she was right now, standing in the middle of her room, Ā with furniture pushed to the wall, facing Pine, with one question on her lips. āTrain with me?ā
āTrain with y- You want me to fight you?ā
Pine had just pushed open the door to K2s rooms- this being one of the days her eyesight wasnāt shut down- and gave a look of confusion to the ALPHA Unit. It was a strange request. Going from cuddling and talking to walking into to an invitation to fight.
Yet Pine moved in and allowed the door to slide shut behind her. The smirk on her face only grew as she moved closer to what could only be considered an arena they both stood in. One hand moved to pull her hair back into a messy bun and green eyes stared at K2 intently. āAre you sure you want to fight me though K2? Cause I am well aware that you fight and practically dismantle androidās day in and day out, but I am no ordinary model.ā
Even with her words, she seemed almost excited at this idea. Being able to spar and see what they were both capable of. There was fear in her gut at the sight of the scar across K2ās face from the last time they truly fought, but this time, she took a deep breath. Youāre in control of yourself. Youāll be fine. K2 will be fine.
So she moved forward, swiftly moving to unclip a section of her jumpsuit and lower it down to be around her waist, the black of her undershirt being the only protection from whatever was to come. Her foot shifted ever so slightly under her, barely noticeable.
āā¦Alright. I think a little training wouldnāt be bad.ā
There was a small sigh and Caroline shook her head. āā¦The facility has always had itsā¦blind spots. We knew this when we built it. While maintenance claws can repair larger parts and nanobots and rebuild things far too dangerous for humans, there are just some things none of us trusted to leave in the hands of robots. The places where youāre sent are likely spots that GLaDOS cannot reach to repair.ā
There was a quiet huff and Caroline had a momentary flash of anxiety cross her face, though it was gone as quick as it came. Yet the moment K2 spoke, she slammed her hands onto the armrests and pushed herself to stand. In seconds, she was across the room and standing right in front of K2. āYou are not outdated. Donāt say something like that.ā Her voice was stern, but her expression showed a much more complex emotion. Compassion.
āGLaDOS is 100 years old. So are you. So am I. This facility is even older than that and yet there are elements of it that are still in use from the beginning. You are not āoutdatedā. Youāre no machine that needs to be replaced. You are one of the most incredible things this damned facility has ever created and I wonāt let you throw yourself down like that.ā It was obvious this was a very passionate topic just due to how much vigor Caroline put into her every word. Her brown eyes seemed to glow as she spoke.
āā¦I asked you to not to see me as your boss, but every time you think that youāre āoutdatedā, Iām going to ask you to tell yourself otherwise.ā

K2 smiled at that, letting out a small hum in response, having already closed her eyes again, and given another- albeit a much gentler- squeeze to the android in her arms, as the lights to her room shut off, and left them both in near complete darkness, save only for the small slivers of light that managed to sneak underneath the tiny crack under the door to the unnaturally lit hallway outside. She knew sheād feel the effects of tonight tomorrow morning- she hadnāt gotten a good look at her clock in a little while, but she reckoned sheād need to be awake in about five hours, six if she was lucky- she wouldnāt have traded this evening for all the sleep in the world. Ā Even if she was getting less sleep overall, K2 knew sheād be sleeping well in that time period. Her and Pine had shared a bed before, but not quite like this. K2 had never quite had the experience of a warm body in her arms, a consistent presence, someone to hold. Ā She was asleep in minutes, already drifting off into a pleasant sleep, filled with vague dreams of stars, and brilliant green fields.
In minutes after K2 was out, Pine followed. She could shut herself down at any moment, but the pleasure of being able to drift off with the feeling of safety was not something she came by often. She took immense happiness in the comfort of feeling protected and warm as she moved to rest.
It hadnāt felt like very long had passed since they had begun to meet behind GLaDOSās back, but eventually the days turned into weeks and even a month. They had both been careful. Pine always said sheād come when she could and that they had to be sneaky so GLaDOS wouldnāt catch on. That ended up with Pine turning her eyes off and leaving herself blind to things so GLaDOS couldnāt see through her eyes either. It was a bit awkward for Pine at first, though probably hilarious for K2, who got to watch Pine stumble around in an attempt to find anything.
Yet the android knew she had to be careful. Every time GLaDOS even seemed to be catching on, sheād work a couple days in a row and make sure that everything was done as soon as it was ordered. Nothing out of place or too slow. When there was worry about being caught, Pine became the machine she was built to be. Obedient and quick on her feet. Yet once she was in the clear, it was back to K2ās room to say hello or spend the night.
An AU with @alpha-unit-k2-157 where both the scientists and GLaDOS destroy each other, leaving the facility to ruin. Pine doesn't want the testing subjects and the ALPHA Units to perish under those circumstances, so she takes over. She ends up becoming more like royalty to the units, giving them both work and protecting them fron the outside. The painting this is based off: "The Accolade"(1901) by Edmund Leighton
Caroline watched with a gentle smile, seeming entertained by K2s reaction and excitement at the idea of doing something other than the āchoresā given by GLaDOS. At least it looked like it gave her some hope. That was rather nice to see. A flicker against the harsh solemn attitude K2 had since the beginning.
āOh I know I wonāt! I love your company! I think youāre a very interesting person and I enjoy the time together. And donāt apologize over the outburst! Iām happy that you think hunting food down with me sounds entertaining. Honestly, itās a chore, but I think having some company will make it a lot more fun.ā Caroline shook her head, trying to confirm that the happy moment was perfectly good and that K2 had no reason to hide her excitement.
Though she frowned a little at what K2 finished off with. āā¦K2. Why do you think that? She needs you to help out. I know what Aperture is capable of, but even we had our limits before we shut down. The reason GLaDOS andā¦ā She avoided talking about Pine, seeming to know that the AI was a touchy subject. āThey both function due to one thing. They run on human consciousness. Thereās base coding, but without their human aspects, they wouldnāt function. At least not well. You are indispensable and quite frankly, one of the best workers Iāve ever seen. ā¦And I knew a LOT of people. She has you because she values what you can do.ā
K2 stifled a yawn, not wanting it to seem as if she were disinterested in the conversation, but also becoming more and more aware just how tired she was. It had been a long day. She had definitely had worse days, and considering she only walked away from today with a bruise- one that she was thankful Pineās body pressure wasnāt accidentally brushing up against- but it was exhausting nonetheless. A slight blush rose to her cheeks at Pineās words, followed by a smile that seemed to be a mixture of affection and amusement. Ā āIād say the same but⦠I donāt think itād mean as much, coming from me. Ā My worldās quite small.ā In comparison, Pine truly was a large part of her world. She was part of Aperture, after all, and Aperture was K2ā²s existence. It was her past, her present, her future. Her purpose, her reason for being, and eventually, her downfall. Ā The fact that the first person she had ever felt⦠like this towards was so closely tied with Aperture? Ā It was the closest thing K2 had seen that sheād call fate. A few moments passed, the ALPHA unit letting out a pleased hum in response to Pineās agreement to her idea. Ā While K2 found it impossible, it was nice to pretend. Ā But with Pine having already closed her eyes, and K2 finding herself closer and closer to just falling asleep mid conversation, she spoke up, her voice soft, and slightly distant. Ā āYou⦠are connected to the facility, right? Ā Is there any chance of youā¦ā Her sentence was broken up by a yawn before she continued, āā¦Being able to automatically turn the lights off in here? I donāt want to get up.ā
āā¦Hey, that still means a lot to you. I meanā¦I guess Iām part of Aperture and Apertureās your whole world. In a way, still a very big compliment, just different too. Thatāsā¦nice to hear thoughā¦Thank you.ā There was a quiet chuckle before Pine snuggled closer to K2 and letting the womanās slowing heartbeat lull her closer to sleep.
Though she quickly realized that it was late and K2 was back on her normal tiring schedule. No wonder she was dozing off so quickly. The deep breaths, quiet heartbeats and overall looseness in K2s muscles gave away just how exhausting her day had been. Pine almost felt bad for keeping her up as much as she had.
She had been laying there, relishing the peaceful silence only to stifle a snort at the request. āYea sure. Good night K2... You sleep well.ā She moved her hand off of K2s chest and rose it up. With a snap, the lights were off and they were left in darkness. The hand quickly returned to its original position and she got comfortable for the night.
Caroline certainly had her reasons for denying to share the sweet treat given to K2, but āI already ateā was the best excuse and the one that required the least amount of explaining. A mental note was made, but she remained nonchalant on the outside. āBesides, thereās plenty more cans where that came from. We can share some the next time!ā
Sitting back in the chair, Caroline fiddled with loose strands of hair, straightened her glasses, and brushed off her skirt. Her eyes moved around the room, but mainly remained on the person across from her. Waiting for K2 to finish the can.
There was a look of surprise. āOh, I know what the state of the facility is in honey. The older sections were a mess once we moved towards the surface. I had to go all the way to the bottom to find our contact that said we owned the salt mine weāre in. And people wonder how the old elevator broke. That wasā¦not a fun day. The newer sections are in the same state. Iāve been around some.ā Caroline chuckled, crossing her legs as she spoke. Though she certainly seemed uncertain. āā¦I⦠I suppose if it is alright with GLaDOS and she doesnāt have you helping with repairs, then you can join me during the day to find some more cans and supplies. I would enjoy your company.ā

K2 wouldnāt have complained if she had. With every passing moment, K2 felt her body relaxing just a little bit more. Ā The weight of Pine against her body combined with the heat of their bodies together quickly became a comfort. Like a blanket, ten times warmer and thicker than the thin ones K2 was used to. Ā She closed her eyes for a moment, and if not for Pineās voice, she knew she wouldāve fallen asleep right there. Ā She wasā¦peaceful. āI never wouldāve expected to feel this way, I never wouldāve even thought to long for something like this, but⦠youāre right. I never want to go back to what it was like, living a life alone. Not when Iāve experienced⦠this.ā Her hand moved absentmindedly against Pineās back, tracing gentle patterns that existed solely in her subconscious. Ā As Pine continued, a small, thoughtful chuckle left her lips, causing a rumble in her chest. Ā It was the pleasant sort, dreamy, entertained, but⦠fantastical. Ā She listened to her partner speak, and she imagined it, taking joy in the thought but seeing it as akin to seeing fairies and dragons. Ā Impossible. āI think⦠I think Iād like that. Iād⦠love it, in fact.ā Ā 157 smiled warmly, closing her eyes, as if to better help herself to picture it, based on what Pine had shown her. āWe could sit⦠somewhere where itās grassy and lush, and I could point out all those constellations you told me about. And Iād forget their names, and you could tease me about itā
Even Pine, who didnāt naturally need sleep, could feel the sudden weight of fatigue on her shoulders. The warmth between them and the peaceful feeling of being beside someone who cared for her just as much as she cared for them was calming. She wanted to chat, but it was obvious they were both nodding off.
āā¦Well Iām gladā¦I think that Iām better offā¦with you by my side. You mean the world to me.ā Pine smiled, just thinking off how much her life had lit up since she met K2. She went from being nothing more than a puppet with nearly no emotion to remembering what it was like to FEEL. No more dead silence in her own mind. Now there was thoughts and feelings and a life. She wasnāt just surviving anymore. She was LIVING.
Pines hands shifted to rest more comfortably across K2, one setting on her chest and feeling the rise and fall from each breath. The faint beat of a heart pricked her fingertips. Her own eyes slid shut, erasing that green glow from the room. āā¦I barely remember the constellations myself. If I wasnāt an AI, I think Iād remember two of them. Butā¦I think just stargazing together would be lovely. ā¦One day.ā
And it was good to note that K2 would have done the same if she had been able to. She had still fought valiantly in the time she was awake, trying her best to shut down GLaDOS and save those around her. Caroline wished that K2 could find her own self-worth, but it was sadly not a surprise that K2 wasnāt very confident at the moment. Years of sleep and returning to decay did its number.
āNo need to apologize. I get it. We can work on that. Old habits die hard, but we can work on changing them over time. Iām no boss now. Iām just an acquaintanceā¦or a friend if youād go that far, but I havenāt known you long.ā Caroline smiled.
For a moment, the woman froze, her brown eyes staring at the can from behind glasses. Then, as if shaking from her stupor, she shook her head. āNo no. I ate before you came, Iām not hungry. That whole can is my gift to you. Please, help yourself.ā She was being generous and made sure to push the point that it was for K2 and K2 alone. The unit was allowed to have her own things down here.
āI do hope you like those. Iāll have to see what else I can find. I remember where some of the old survival kits are around the facility. Maybe Iāll stop and grab some more on the way to my old office. If youād like anything specific, Iāll keep my eyes peeled.ā
