Part 1: Wet Hands At The Red Drop

The strawberry stands unadorned upon the plate

Of a man with the gait of a thorn,

Cold eyes of scorn, arrived late

To the place he swore to inspect. Once more

Does fate curse the unlucky.

Unimpressed, he lifts the singular morsel,

To his mouth but pauses, the fork still

Hovering as he swears to see a dorsal

Anomaly, a brief pulsating like it's all filled

With maggots.

“Excuse me!” He shouts to the waiter,

And it emerges from the shadows

“Save your meagre critiques for later”

It growls to his enraged throes

And folds back out of sight,

To a lair beyond the light

Sights turn back to the fork, which now

Holds naught but a feeling of dread-

Instead the bulbous lump lays back,

Stacked upon the table, wriggling subtly,

A bubbly grey substance oozing

Through the stem and the seeds

Weeze a soft breath as they are pushed,

Thrust delicately from the pores,

Torn red pulp adorns the discarded seeds

Freed from their crimson prison,

And from the gaping caves whence they came

Crawls dozens of spiders and worms,

Churning from within like a vat of germs

The critic's mouth, which had ruined lives,

Closed livelihoods, spit disease into the

Faces of places which had placated

Many people of their hunger and thirst

Loomed open in utter terror,

And the bugs lurched, launched

To the torso clinging, climbing

Up the neck, scratching, scraping

The critic wants nothing more than to close his mouth,

But often nothing lives up to his high expectations

And so the slithering critters march in

A broad red smile stares from a corner

And indulges in the sight of the

Detested guest ingested, infested, tested and bested,

And growls with satisfaction as the ruined

Corpse falls to the floor, eggs latched within

I have seen men turned to heroes

Turned to villains

Turned to bones

Turned to relics.

I have seen monsters slay their foes

Despite the prayers of clerics.

I have seen comets

Turned to treasure

Turned to the stone of a kingdom's walls

Turned to the monument of its downfall.

Great things have been built under my eye

But they all seem equally small.

I have seen the ravages of time,

The vortex of chaos and carnal crime

Until the war drum marches to a new rhyme,

A new reason, the same grime,

Needless violence by design.

Lately I've been seeking peace in the wild,

The magic looms dream-like over crests

Of hills, and in the valleys of lonely isles,

Untouched by foul Man, treasure chests

Of resplendent beauty, uniquely fine,

And I think this is where my eyes will rest,
