I came across this in an old issue of Upper & Lowercase. It was designed by Claudia de Castro for her class at Florida State University in good ol' 1988. She called it Helvedeco.

It's wonderful in theory. Only I don't want it to reduce the design experience into a process that can be overly managed and generalized. I think designers, as similarly stated by Michael Beirut, have a sort of gift or developed ability to bring imagination, surprise, beauty and structure to a project.
