Nissa and Emrakul’s connection across the multiverse…
An angel descending from the sky.
Nissa opened her eyes, and the angel continued to descend. It was the angel from her nightmare. The angel that reminded her of Emrakul.
The angel’s eyes were open, but unlike the dream, there were no snakes, just blank white orbs. She landed in front of Nissa.
“Why do you dally? I showed you the ways of power. Use them.” The angel’s voice melodious, a cool breeze. Beautiful. And beautiful the way Amonkhet was beautiful, all horror underneath.
Nissa tried to summon her power, but nothing happened.
I can do anything I want. Anything at all.
Except she couldn’t. She stood there rooted to the ground, as the angel continued with her beautiful voice.
“Are you a pawn? Or a queen?”
“Who are you?” Nissa screamed. She knew it could not be Emrakul, worlds away trapped in silver. It was just another illusion, another creation born of the magic and her own thoughts. “Just go away! Go!” Nissa bowed her head in agony, intense pain blossoming in her head. She closed her eyes, but the angel remained there in front of her clearly visible whether through eyes shut or open.
“Nissa Revane. Are you pawn or queen?”
“I … I don’t know. I just want …”
“No!” The angel’s voice turned cold and harsh. “It is the wrong question! Pawns, queens, they’re all still pieces! All still pieces, waiting to be moved.”
The angel put a hand to Nissa’s chin. She gently tipped Nissa’s head up, looking at her face. There was no love in that gaze, but the look comforted nonetheless. The pain in Nissa’s head receded.
“Stop being a piece, Nissa. Be the hand that moves.” There was a loud rumbling behind them. The angel looked over Nissa’s shoulder, and something shifted in her eyes. Without word or farewell the angel soared into the sky, and was soon just a speck in the far distance…
It was Emrakul who ignited Nissa’s spark.
Nissa’s story is interwoven with Emrakul’s right from the very beginning, and if all the theories are true about the Eldrazi as vital parts of the cycle of the Multiverse, then who better to understand the order of the multiverse and how important it is to keep the balance than a Green-aligned planeswalker.
The planeswalkers meddling with the natural ways of the multiverse (Ugin, Sorin, and Nahiri imprisoning the Eldrazi and the Gatewatch destroying them) could have catastrophic results in the future. The life cycle of the multiverse might be corrupted and worse, stopped altogether, posing a greater threat to the existence of all the planes.
These events might even be orchestrated by Nicol Bolas himself. My guess is that he is trying to create this imbalance to trigger a sort of reverse mending that will ultimately bring back his pre-mending powers.
Perhaps releasing Emrakul (and in doing so might bring back Ulamog and Kozilek) from the silver moon will be one of the difficult choices the Gatewatch will make in the future.
And this brings us back to Nissa. She could be the only one with the power to release the Eldrazi Titan from the moon. Her glyph is the seal so technically she is the warden, the Eldritch Moon’s Gatewatcher. It’s an ironic twist of fate that brings everything into full circle. She released the titans as an enemy before, now perhaps she would open the gate as an ally.
And perhaps even a queen was too small a destiny.
She heard a voice, her own voice, clear as a crystal bell.
“Be the hand that moves.”
