Opening, one petal at a time

The Lotus Mandala is the one I trace when I want to slow all the way down.

The lotus carries an old idea in it: the flower rises out of muddy water and opens clean, untouched by what it grew from. As a symbol it's about that — clarity emerging from murk, not by escaping the mud but by rising through it. A mandala takes that single image and multiplies it into rings, petal within petal, until the whole thing becomes a map of opening.

Tracing it teaches the same lesson from the hand's side. You start at the outer edge and work in, one petal, then the next, and you can't rush it — the form won't let you. Somewhere along the way the pace stops feeling like patience you're spending and starts feeling like the point. The breath lengthens on its own. The noise thins out. What's left is the next line, and the next, moving quietly toward the center.

Nothing is added by doing this. You draw over what's already printed. And yet by the time you reach the middle, something has settled that wasn't settled when you began. Experiences vary, and I'd call this reflection rather than advice.

Nothing is added

Zagan is the sigil I reach for when I want to think about change.

In the old grimoires he's a strange, practical figure — a king and president among the seventy-two spirits, and the entries about him read almost like a list of party tricks. Water into wine. Blood into wine. Wine back into water. Metal into coin. And, tucked in at the end, the one that isn't a trick at all: he is said to make fools wise.

What strikes me about that list is what's missing from it. Nothing is imported. No new substance shows up. Water was already there; wine was already there; the fool was already there. Every item is the same material, turned. That's a much older and stranger idea of transformation than the one we usually run on, which is mostly acquisition — get more, add on, bolt something new to the front of your life.

Tracing works the older way. You don't gain anything by doing it. There is no new material at the end of thirty evenings; there's the same pen, the same hand, the same set of lines you've now followed thirty times. And yet the thing is not where it started. The attention has been rearranged. Whatever was scattered has been turned toward one place, over and over, until it holds.

I think that's why the fool-into-wise line sits at the end of his entry rather than the beginning. It's the same operation as the wine and the water, just run on a person. Experiences vary, and I'd call this reflection rather than advice.

There is a small tradition in Japan called otakiage — the ceremonial burning of things that have served their purpose. Old amulets, letters, dolls that have been loved too long to simply throw away. The fire is not a verdict. It is a farewell, done properly.

I have been thinking about what it means to end something well. We are very good, in this era, at acquiring — feelings included. We collect grievances, regrets, small unspoken hopes, and they sit in us the way old letters sit in a drawer. Somewhere between keeping and discarding, there ought to be a third thing: sending away, with care.

That is what I am building.

It is called NIKO TSUKIHI — tsuki for moon, hi for fire. Twice a month, in rhythm with the sky. Under the full moon, you write what you wish to release. Under the new moon, what you wish to welcome. Your letter is printed, paired with a sigil or a line of sacred script chosen for your intention, and burned with care. The ashes are carried to a nearby river — released first by fire, and then by water. You receive a video of the ceremony.

For a few minutes, under a moon you can also see, your words are treated as if they matter. Because they do.

The first ceremony is on August 13th, at the new moon. A fitting night, I thought, for a beginning.

What accumulates

Clauneck is the sigil I come back to when I want to think about money slowly.

In the old grimoires, Clauneck is listed among the spirits said to govern wealth, treasure, and the finding of what lies hidden. Written down like that, it reads like a promise of sudden fortune — the kind of entry that attracts people looking for a shortcut. But the sigil itself doesn't behave like a shortcut. It's a compact figure: a few loops, a crossbar, a small sun. Tracing it once takes under a minute.

Thirty times takes thirty days, if you let it.

That gap is the part I find worth sitting with. Whatever the tradition says the seal draws toward you, the practice teaches the opposite of sudden: you show up, you follow the same handful of lines, and nothing dramatic happens on any given evening. What changes is smaller and slower — the hand gets surer, the mind stops arguing, and the attention you were spending on wanting starts going into noticing instead. Wealth, in the old sense, was never only coin. It was also the ability to see what was already in the room.

I don't know that a seal makes anyone richer. I do know that thirty quiet evenings with a pen change how you count things. Experiences vary, and this is reflection rather than advice.

Bael opens the old lists — the first of the seventy-two spirits. His sigil is said to carry discretion, protection, and a quiet kind of authority. I like that the tradition frames him not as noise but as restraint: the power in not announcing yourself.

Tracing a sigil is a strange, good discipline. You're not asked to believe anything. You just follow the line where it goes, and follow it again, and the repetition does something the intention never could — it empties you out a little. By the tenth pass the seal isn't on the page anymore, it's in the hand.

A collection of things worth tracing by hand.

Over the past several months I've been building out a small library of tracing workbooks — sacred texts and sigils you copy, slowly, with a pen or brush, one line at a time. Some of it comes from Japan: Shinto purification prayers, a Buddhist sutra of just forty-two characters, ancient scripts written in spirals. Some of it comes from further west: the seventy-two sigils of the Goetia, angels of the Shem HaMephorash, sacred geometry.

Different traditions, different centuries, but the practice underneath them is the same. You're not memorizing anything. You're not trying to get it right. You're just following a shape that someone else drew a long time ago, slowly enough to actually pay attention to it — which turns out to be harder, and more worth doing, than it sounds.

I put together a small site with all of it in one place, if you want to look through it: 30 and 100-repetition editions, organized by tradition, each one with a bit of background on where it comes from and what it's traditionally said to offer.

Trace the mantra of Fudo Myoo.

In the esoteric Buddhist tradition, Fudo Myoo — "The Immovable" — is depicted seated in flames, sword in one hand, a rope in the other. The sword is said to cut through delusion. The rope is said to bind what needs to be restrained, even the parts of ourselves that resist it. He doesn't look gentle. He isn't supposed to.

The Jikushu is one of his shorter mantras, recited for centuries as a chant of protection and resolve — something to return to when a path forward is unclear, or when what's needed isn't comfort but the will to cut something loose.

Tracing the mantra by hand, character by character, isn't about memorizing Sanskrit-derived syllables or getting the pronunciation right. It's closer to what the repetition itself has always been for — a way of sitting with resolve long enough to actually feel it, instead of just wanting it.

There's something fitting about a practice built around "immovability" that asks so little of you except to keep going, one slow line at a time.

Trace the sigil of Buer.

Among the seventy-two spirits of the Goetia, Buer doesn't appear on a throne or announced by trumpets. The old texts describe something quieter — a teacher of natural philosophy, someone who understood the properties of herbs and plants long before anyone called that kind of knowledge medicine. He's remembered less for power and more for balance: the ability to look at something out of alignment and know, gently, how to bring it back.

His sigil reflects that. Where some of the Goetia symbols read as aggressive — sharp angles, closed loops — Buer's has a kind of roundness to it. Circles within circles. Nothing rushing toward a point.

Tracing it slowly, pen in hand, isn't a treatment for anything. It won't fix what's actually wrong in your body or your life. But there's something to the repetition itself — thirty or a hundred careful passes over the same quiet shape — that seems to ask less of you than most of the day does. No decision, no outcome to manage. Just the line, and your hand following it.

Trace the sigil of Paimon.

Among the seventy-two spirits of the Goetia, Paimon is traditionally named a King — crowned, riding a camel, his arrival announced by a procession of attendants sounding trumpets and cymbals. He isn't remembered for force. He's remembered for what he's said to know: all arts, all sciences, the kind of knowledge others have to come and ask for.

Tracing his sigil isn't a shortcut to knowledge. But the slow, repeated act of following his shape with a pen — thirty or a hundred times — is a way of sitting with a question long enough to actually think about it, instead of just reacting to it.
