I think fanfiction as a medium is different enough from mainstream literature in the tools it offers writers that it's a shame that it's not talked about more often. And it's not me saying "fanfic is better than books xD" because that sort of mindset is a symptom of people who aren't particularly well read in either medium. I'm just speaking of like... The little things you get to do with a fanfic that you genuinely can't really do in an original story.
I had a big fanfic in a previous fandom where one of the big reveals was the involvement of a kind of infamous villain, whose presence was built up to and foreshadowed through the whole fic until his reveal without ever mentioning his name, so that the name drop would be a gut punch. It worked especially well because of who the villain was and his presence in that fandom space specifically (it's very complicated) and if it was an original story this reveal wouldn't work at all the way it was written in the fic. Because if you don't have a predisposition to think about that character and his relationship to the hero in a very specific way, then just seeing their name won't do much to you; the reveal and the recontextualisation it pushes upon you hinges on your previous knowledge of the source material.
I think it's an interesting tool fanfic authors are given. One of my favorite fanfic of all time is partially a re-imagining of its source material's canon, and something it does is introduce antagonists much earlier in the story or deepen npcs' stories. It then works to evoke a tragic irony that again wouldn't work if you didn't know the source material, and it's something the author obviously has a lot of fun with.
You could call it cheap or a crutch and I mean, yeah, sure, it is a little bit: the fanfic relies on previously established emotional bonds and stakes to achieve its goal, and in some cases it saves the author from having to 'properly' build up its stakes. But I think it's INTERESTING that it has that tool at its disposal. I think it's a fun thing to play with and I think these built in expectations and emotional bonds are especially why I find story driven aus in particular to be fascinating in the amount of ways you can play with them. You know??
The line 'Harry Potter was dead' doesn't work without the cannon of its source material holding it up (a line people will not be able to read now because it is published and the original taken down from the archive, which is another sad conversation for another time). Half the stuff in my own fic doesn't make sense without my readers being aware of the world and story I'm pulling from. And I would argue it's not just interesting. It's a skill in and of itself to take pre-existing characters, write as them, plot as them, tell stories that make sense around them, and use the cannon in a recognisable but divergent way.
Fanfic is a medium in and of itself, and it deserves all the recognition it does and doesn't get.

So there’s this idea that fic writers should write for themselves and not care too much about stats or engagement,
and i totally get the sentiment behind that. if writing becomes entirely about stats and external validation, something important does get lost - creative freedom and joy, conviction in your own writing
but i also think:
“i write for myself, but i post for others.”
because posting fic is not only self-expression. it’s social. ao3 is called an archive, but emotionally it often functions as a community space.
people post for connection, for participation, for others to bear witness to their pain and trauma and grief,
and i don’t think most people are asking to be admired so much as acknowledged. there’s something deeply human about wanting another person to encounter something that mattered to you and go:
“ok, yeah, I see what you were trying to say. I see you.”
especially because fanfic is often people processing very real feelings through fictional characters at a safe distance, one step removed,
and then uploading that deeply personal thing into a shared archive and hoping somebody else might connect with it.
And i think that’s why it hurts so much when you summon up the courage and post a fic into the void and you get nothing back,

I'm going through a bit of a kpop renaissance at the moment. I used to listen to BTS a lot in my early twenties, particularly their album Wings, and then their music changed quite drastically and I (sadly and reluctantly) lost interest. Their new album, Arirang, sounds a lot more like their old stuff and honestly it made me so happy when I first listened that I almost cried.
Bones For The Crows - Nickelback
When I first heard this, I literally couldn't stop smiling. Nickelback gets a lot of hate in the emo and metal spaces (or at least they did when I was a teen) but the nostalgia man, it was pure bliss.
🤩 Current Obsession: my obsessions fall into two categories; temporary and lifetime. Sims is a lifetime obsession. Dragon Age Veilguard was a temporary one. The last true obsession I've had was BG3, and while that has faded slightly now as I've started to play other things and consume other content, it has cemmented itself in my life as a lifelong obsession. The fanfic helped move it there, but honestly not a day goes by when I don't think about that story and those character. Lifelong babies make it onto my skin as tattoos, and I'm excited to get that done beginning of July.

The last thing I read was The Unworthy by Augustina Bazterica, which is a wonderful if truly disturbing horror book about feminism, and how the call is coming from inside the house. A lot of horror I have read coming out of Argentina is fucking wonderful, there must be something in the water over there. I do wish I was reading more. As a English and Creative Writing gratuate, it used to be my entire life. But for some reason at the moment I simple can't and it's killing me.
✨ Currently Working On: just the one project at the moment, and that is the BG3 fanfic 'A Baldurian Isekai'. I only have 28 chapters left to write and honestly this story is fighting me every step of the way. But I've put my blood, sweat and tears into this project. It has been my life for two and a half years, and I'm so proud of everything I've been able to do with it. Act 3 has really allowed me to explore my political beliefs and push characters to their absolute limit, and I just hope I can pull all of my ideas off in a satisfactory way.
After the fanfic, I am planning to write an original Omegaverse regression fic. It's in the early stages of world building, but hopefully I can still write when the fanfic is over.
✨ Currently Wearing: I'm burning up with a fever after leaving work early, so currently nothing cause I'm sweating through everything. You'd normally find me in baggy jeans and my 'Precious Little Bhaal Babe' baby-tee, of which I own three.
✨ Last Search: Saros biome symbols. I'm currently playing Saros and planning my next batch of tattoos, so was looking for a reference. Honestly, I can't recommend Saros enough. If you like mystery ridden rogue-locks, please give it a try. Returnal and Saros are so underappreciated in my book and more people should play them.
✨ Favourite Flower: honestly, I don't have one. Once upon a time I would've said peonie, because they look pretty and smell hella fragrant. But now, I have to be honest and say I'm not really a flowers person. At least not the kind you cut and put in a vase. I will say though that, although technically not a flower and despite it being very context specific, hanami season in Japan was otherworldly. If I could experience something for the first time again, it would be a petal shower in Kyoto. Pain in the ass city, but man was it beautiful.

Purple prose isn't the enemy boring prose is. yeah you can overwrite but you can also underwrite until everything feels flat. use weird words sometimes. get poetic about the wrong things. spend a whole paragraph on how light hits a window if it matters to the moment. literary fiction gets to be flowery why can't you? find your own level of extra. some readers want lean and punchy. some want lush and dense. write sentences that feel good in your mouth when you read them out loud. if it sounds like YOU that's style baby.
As a flowery, paragraph-of-emotions-between-each-line-of-dialogue kind of writer, I can't shout this from the rooftops enough. I used to stress myself fucking stupid thinking my writing was 'too much'. Turns out it was the leftovers of being told of was 'too much', too loud, too crass, too opinionated, too outspoken, too vulgar and rude and taking up too much space, in real life. Fuck that shit.
I spill out onto the page just like I spill out into real life.

(It's Gale's voice that brings me back, and when I follow his worried gaze, I see my hands wrapped around Astarion's wrist, my nails digging into his skin so deep I've drawn blood, his hand twisted at an odd, painful angle, I let go immediately)

A: 'It's fine, love. I've got you. A lick of your blood, and I'll be all healed and back to my usual, gorgeous self.' (he murmurs gently, but as I release his wrist, I can see the damage I've done, the damage Astarion has allowed me to do)

We crunched the numbers, made some lovely infographics, gathered a ton of phenomenal quotes, data’d the data—and shared the results over on our blog.

Almost all of you believe that human provenance is a must. (And we couldn’t agree more.)
This one came as a bit of a shock: nearly half of all respondents felt their work could be mistaken for AI.
And almost all of you (99.5%) think AI content should be clearly labeled.
