What To Do When Someone Writes The Story You Wanted To Write
Pause Before You Spiral Your first reaction might be panic or jealousy. That’s normal. Do not make decisions in that emotional moment.
Remember Ideas Are Not Execution Two writers can start with the same concept and create completely different stories. Voice changes everything.
Study What They Did Differently Instead of giving up, analyze their approach. What themes did they emphasize? What would you have done differently?
Ask Why You Loved the Idea Was it the trope, the character dynamic, the setting? You can still explore that emotional core in your own way.
Refocus on Your Perspective No one has your lived experience, your worldview, or your emotional lens. That alone makes your version unique.
Shift the Angle Slightly Change the time period, genre, tone, or central conflict. A small pivot can make the story entirely new.
Avoid Comparison Traps Comparing your early draft to someone else’s finished, edited book will only drain your creativity.
Remember Publishing Is Not Limited to One Story There is room in every genre for multiple takes on similar ideas.
Use It as Motivation If the concept works for someone else, it proves there is an audience for that type of story.
Write It Anyway If the story still burns inside you, that means it belongs to you too. Your version deserves to exist.

Fair warning, M&M met through a DC fandom, so we have Big Feelings and many Thoughts about the movie and what is required to convey DC properly on the big screen. We also... really love Lex.
Superman losing his composure only when people shrug off the lives of others. Doesn’t matter how well he knows them. Doesn’t matter if they’re even human.
He gets upset at the Justice Gang for brutally killing a rampaging Kaiju and not even attempting to find a way to move it or at least euthanize it more humanely.
The only time he raises his voice during Lois’ interview is when she digs into his interference in geopolitics, because people would have died if he hadn’t acted. The only time he yells at Luthor is when Luthor abducts Krypto. The only time he cries is when Luthor murders someone he barely even knew.
He saves a fucking squirrel for god’s sake. We’re so back.
I enjoy that from the little glimpse we saw from his parents we know exactly why he's that way. His Ma is headstrong and firm in her beliefs and his dad is a "mush"- a very kindly man who doesn't know a ton but believes in the good of humans and how important it is to care.
