this actually happened yesterday, but I held off until today cuz I needed to get my act together… since this seemed as good enough of a reason as any to kick things off early this year…

I know sports isn’t really the focus of this blog, but the current situation regarding the Calgary Flames arena is pretty interesting/scummy. Basically, the Flames ownership is pushing for a new arena, and are trying to get the city to pay for a large portion of it, and subtly threatening to move if they don’t get their way. Calgary’s municipal elections are about a month from now, and it seems that the Flames messaging is basically trying to either get Naheed Nenshi to change his stance (he seems to be against the city paying for most of the arena) or to use the threat of relocation to get another candidate elected over Nenshi. With the Flames owner(s) being all obscenely rich, they can obviously afford to pay for most of a new arena, but this is just another example of sports teams trying to pressure cities into paying for most of the costs of new arenas. This seems to be the first example of a team actually trying to influence an election AFAIK, so this might be a new low.

I can’t express how blatant an attempt to swing the city election this is. God I hope that Nenshi wins in a landslide and continues to tell the Flames ownership exactly where they can get off.

Yes there should absolutely be non-alcholic spaces for underage lgbt people and those who choose not to drink. This should also include poor lgbt persons and lgbt persons of color which means this business shouldn’t be in a gentrified area and it shouldn’t charge 5 dollars for a cup of bean water with organic non-gmo coconut milk and Arabian sugar.

Desjardins Group is considering backing out of its $145-million commitment to Kinder Morgan Inc.’s Trans Mountain pipeline expansion, two people present at a meeting with the financial institution told Reuters.

At the meeting last Thursday, Desjardins senior executives told aboriginal leaders the lender will consider their request to pull its financing for the $7.4-billion project, said Eugene Kung, a lawyer for the west coast Tsleil-Waututh Nation, who was at the event.

Desjardins is a minor lender for the project, but a potential pull back would go beyond an announcement in July when it temporarily suspended lending for future oil pipelines. Desjardins, the largest association of credit unions in North America, said it may make the decision permanent this month, citing concerns about the impact pipelines may have on the environment.

Every actor, crew member, usher has to get paid for their work every week.

Theatre isn’t a fucking right, you are not entitled to the labor of actors and actresses. We have a hard enough time making ends meet without you trying to kill regional shows, ticket sales, and any future professional releases.
