The Rules: A Guide To Surviving The Zombie Apocalypse

The first step in adapting to a zombie apocalypse is understanding what it is you're getting into.

You're gonna be walking into a world where death will be around every corner, everyday. It will be harsh, it will be brutal, it will be unforgiving.

Any mistake could be your last, and your life will now be something more akin to an animal's: Constantly having to search for food, water, and shelter from the elements and the dead.

It might help you out to learn how to do long-term camping, along with hunting, and fishing, because...that's kind of what your life is likely to be like once the apocalypse hits.

The sooner you know what you're getting into, the sooner you can be ready for it.

Survival is all about adaptation.

The animal that adapts to its environment does better.

As important as it is to face your fears in a zombie apocalypse, doing so doesn't mean jumping into some half-assed attack against zombies or hostiles, that's just stupid, and will get you killed.

To do it right, sometimes, it takes time; You're not gonna get an army of highly trained soldiers to help you fight with just a snap of your fingers, it can take months.

You see, sometimes, the hardest thing to do, the thing we may want to do the least, is nothing, but, that's the point: It's better to do nothing sometimes, than make a stupid mistake.

Being afraid of things in a zombie apocalypse has deeper consequences than you realize.

Take hostiles for example. Hostiles you'll encounter in the apocalypse will rely on your fear, it will make them stronger, because, if you're unwilling to stand up them, you're basically guaranteeing compliance with whatever they want while they take zero risk to get it.

Basically, by giving in to your fear, you're doing half their work for them.

You have to face your fears, lest they be your undoing.

Everyone's afraid of something, and, in a zombie apocalypse, there's a lot to be afraid of. But, you can't run from your problems.

Sure, you can get out of an area that has lots of zombies or hostiles, but, even if you go to an island, eventually, either zombies or hostiles or both will come to you.

Whether we like it or not, the only way to deal with what we're afraid of...is to face it. If you don't, that fear will chase you forever.

There's all sorts of things that we won't do because they're disgusting to us in some way, but, "disgust" is something of a luxury we can't afford in a zombie apocalypse.

Don't like eating old canned food? Too bad! That might be the only food for miles.

Get grossed out by having to kill a shambling rotting corpse? Too bad! If said shambling rotting corpse is about to eat your face, you damn sure better deal with it, lest it SUCCEED in eating your face.

The lesson for today? a zombie apocalypse, you can’t be squeamish.

We always have to do things we don’t like to do or want to do, that's life.

However, in a zombie apocalypse, it literally is your life.

Who wants to be running all day being chased by zombies? Nobody. Who wants to have legit life-or-death battles with strangers for old cans of food? Nobody.

But, if you want to survive, you may have to do those things!

The world doesn't care what you want or don't want, what you like or don't like, doubly so in a zombie apocalypse.

Before we get started on a new season of The Walking Dead, I wanted to ask this question: Of all the villains we encountered last season...Who's the most despicable?

The Most irredeemable?

I can't tell what to do in a zombie apocalypse when things go wrong because, obviously, every situation is different. But, I can tell you what not to do: Panic.

Rest assured, however bad your situation may be when things go south on you, panicking will always make them worse. Guaranteed.

The simple fact is: When things go wrong, you need to think clearly and rationally to either find a solution or find an exit, and, if you're panicking...you can't do that.

Panicking causes you to get confused, and rushed, neither of which are conducive to clear and rational thought, and can cause you to make mistakes, making things even worse. When things go bad, stay calm, and do not panic.
