having being anti death penalty as one of my core beliefs is fun because it really makes me realize how even progressive people want soooooo badly for there to be a category of people they can kill. I'm sorry but "group of people okay to kill" does not exist.

#like idk I think giving the state the right to kill people is fucking crazy #IDC how many safeguards there are because in practice they just get so ignored #too many people on death row are innocent #even if it was just one innocent person on death row that would be too much but it's way more than that #and it's also disproportionately people of color who wind up on death row. don't you think that's strange.#again giving the state the right to kill people is fucking insane #those “safeguards” can wither away SO easily #I don't think a judge or a jury has the right to decide whether we take someone's life away from them #because there is no taking that back. when someone's dead they're dead.#prison should not be punitive either. it is intentionally designed that way to keep people in the system for the sake of exploiting-#-slave labor because incarcerated persons are allowed to be enslaved #add for-profit and privately owned prisons in there and you have a positive feedback loop of incarceration #prisons need to be restorative and if someone cannot be restored then we shouldn't kill them #maybe they should just be exiled instead of they cannot abide by societal rules.#but you cannot take back a death.#and besides the death penalty only exists as a means for people to wank themselves off about how righteous they are #gosh don't you feel better that we made a big display out of killing this bad(?) person? retribution! let's jerk each other off about it!#just fucking unbelievable. there is no good reason for the death penalty.#the specifics here are intended to be about the USA of course but the broad strokes remain for other nations too #I just know a lot more about the US prison system than I do other nations.
