A federal judge has ordered bottled water must be delivered to Flint residents unless officials can prove there is an operating, properly-installed water filter in their home.
Some good news for y’all. The ACLU won a victory the other day in Flint Michigan. What do you want to bet that the cost of having to supply residents with clean water will inspire change pretty quickly?
Please donate to the ACLU if you haven’t already. You can probably spare $10. Give them $10. It goes so so far.
idk if you know this but i love her so much

#TransLawHalp
I am participating in a #translawhelp project coordinated by a legit lawyer, Kendra Albert. They work at the Zeitgeist Law Firm in San Francisco and are a former intern at the Electronic Frontier Foundation. They’re pairing up interested donors with trans people who need financial resources to update their documentation - get in touch with them to learn how you can help.

TransLawHelp is not a “scam.” Info from a volunteer.
Yes, Riley is involved. So are a lot of other volunteers who saw the hashtag or a call to help and just wanted to try to put together a good resource. It’s a shame to see that resource buried under misinformation, so here’s some facts.
What is TransLawHelp? It began as a hashtag started by Riley calling for trans-positive and pro-bono legal resources for trans people in the US. Many people saw the hashtag and participated. From there, someone (I assume Riley) decided to try to make it more useful by turning it into a website that people could browse by state, translawhelp.org. The idea was that the website would be curated information, and thus more reliable and permanent than the hashtag.
How do I use it? What kind of organization is it? It’s just a website/hashtag. You look through it to try to find resources relevant for you. The website is more curated than the hashtag and content has been checked out by volunteers who are loosely organized and mostly not legal professionals. They are just studiously googling to establish legitimacy. TransLawHelp does not ask for money or information, it is an open list of resources. They are not an intermediary. No one volunteering will involve themselves in any legal discussion you have with a lawyer you found on the site. They won’t even know about it unless you for some reason tell them.
What are those Patreon/YouCaring/PayPal links? The YouCaring fund is for trans people who cannot afford even a discounted lawyer. It’s owned by a New York trans-positive lawyer named Carl Charles who volunteered to help out with TransLawHelp, and who I think is the main legal person involved. The Patreon and Paypal are for website costs, which are about $30/mo right now and were paid out of pocket by the person who set it up. The money would go back to reimbursing her, not Riley. I don’t know what would hypothetically happen in the event of overflow donations.
Who is involved? Riley organized the effort and beyond that it’s just volunteers who help with the website. I got involved because a friend and someone I’d worked with put out a call for web developers (and I can’t do much else, being Canadian). Basically everyone got involved because they heard about it and put their hand up to pitch in. You can check out the contributor guidelines if you’re interested, but Riley said they’ve been getting rape and death threats since people saw they were involved, so they’re probably wary about too many new people in close proximity.
What are the volunteers doing? Basically, they set up a Google Form where people can submit resources (lawyers, notaries, information, youth centers, etc) by state. Right now only things submitted through the form and not the hashtag are allowed on the site, in case someone didn’t really want to be put on a website without their permission (this is also why the site is a bit sparse right now). Volunteers look at submitted resources to make sure they check out. Sometimes they contact lawyers to ask THEM for more information to establish legitimacy, but only if there’s contact info. They don’t ask them up-front about what they would charge. Nobody contacts users at all. If the info seems legit, it goes on the website. You should still do your own research on what you find there and the website itself says as much.
Ultimately TransLawHelp is a volunteer-run starting point of resources - but I think it’s a pretty good starting point that at least alleviates fear about contacting lawyers that might not be trans-positive or willing to help. Please at least signal boost this post so people can decide for themselves if they want to check it out.

Hey there, i saw your post about trans law help being a scam (at least from the person who started it). i'm somewhat familiar with riley and their antics re: the arkh project, but i just wanted to verify to be sure, do you have good proof that trans law help is run by them and it's not a legit thing? i want to make sure i'm reblogging the right info
Hey friend, thanks for reaching out, & sorry for the full links, I’m on mobile.
So here’s the deal, I made that post after a friend informed me who twitter user dtwps was, and linked me to this:http://hradzka.dreamwidth.org/427926.html
I panicked. I had reblogged the daily dot article that cites dtwps specifically (http://www.dailydot.com/irl/trans-law-help/) and after deleting it I was worried that my friends on my dash had done the same. I didn’t want any of them to be taken advantage of, so I made that quickie post in the hopes of alerting them, not even thinking that others would take notice of it. Most of my friends were around for the arkh project and know who that person is without context, which is why my post was so admittedly sparse.
I NEVER expected the post to blow up so much, that kind of thing has never happened to me before, and I deeply regret not being more judicious before making it. I also, in my anxiousness, said they were “running” trans law help, when in fact they had started the hashtag. By the time I figured out my mistake, only a couple hours later, the post was beyond salvaging, so I deleted it.
I would still say watch out for those who would abuse good intentions, but I also know that many MANY good organizations and individuals are using the hashtag, including the Sylvia Rivera Project. I also know a lot of other people are reblogging & recommending more wonderful places on my original post, but there’s also been a lot of animosity and I feel in part responsible by not being more thorough.
In the end though, as many people have pointed out, the translawhelp hashtag is full of real organizations offering assistance.
Edit: Please consider reading this post by a trans law help volunteer, and spreading it around to help clear up misinformation. I feel terrible that I might have hurt any efforts to help the cause: http://fury-brand.tumblr.com/post/153097149652/translawhelp-is-not-a-scam-info-from-a

Hey, are you open to podfic of your stories? The one I'm thinking of doing is Claws and Cakes and Painted Stones which absolutely took my breath away reading it and I didn't see a statement on your profile about whether you're ok with podfic or not.
Oh my gosh!!! Yes, wow I’d love that, thank you so much for asking and for reading my work! Please link me to it when you’re done I’d love to hear it!
