fun elder scrolls facts: the reason there’s no children NPCs in oblivion is because if the npc scale is set to child-size they drown themselves if they path through water to fight a mudcrab as oblivion NPCs love to do
On one hand it is difficult to raise a family when 99% of children die in mudcrab-related incidents, but on the other hand every person who survives to adulthood is an excellent swimmer and can rip a mudcrap apart with their bare hands.
Question
How do you guys go about designing your TES OCs?
Personally, I only have basic things like race, hair color, and eye color in mind before I use a character creator for my OC's final physical appearance. For clothing, I just make them wear whatever until I find an outfit that suits them.
They start with stuff like who they're related to, who they will be shipped with, primarily fighting class, and the general story they will follow. From that I get their race and backstory and personality, which influences appearance in my head, and then the character creator. And after all that, the outfits have to come to me. Colors, styles, armor type, all that, it really depends on their story.
I start with a premise, like their story, THEN I work on the physical features and move to family n friends after
i start with their looks and a small vague backstory, usually how they ended up where they are in the first place. for looks i just go with my gut feeling of what feels right, and their personality just comes to me as i play, as well as their actual story and colors and outfits. it’s never all at once, usually snippets here and there that just pop into my mind and click. it’s super fun because it’s always unexpected and it surprises me with what my brain can conjure up
honestly for me making an oc is a game in itself
it kind of depends for me? sometimes i know exactly what i want (altaire was totally this for me), sometimes i know what kind of character i want (i.e. their factions or their personality or sometimes i give myself some sort of design challenge because i love using the character creators in games - speaking of, i have to introduce you all to kaisra at some point!!! :>) and go based on that, sometimes i just... need to create a character and mess around with the creator until something that i’m happy with comes out (lyra was this for me! and so was adelaide actually, and then after that i just decided all my mcs are going to have similar appearances). sometimes the character completely exists in my head but i can’t come up with an appearance i’m happy with, so i remake them like four separate times (cough alara cough).
one thing i will say is that the outfit is usually the last thing for me, everything else generally has to be worked out first. i also tend to be very fluid with my stories, so things can change a lot personality-wise, but i don’t /usually/ mess too much with appearances once i find one i’m happy with.
