"I Will What I Want"
Wassup ladies! Happy August! As summer is coming to a close (hard to believe, isn't it? I'm not quite ready for it to be over either), we do have something BIG to look forward to, and that's fall sports! I just wanted to share two pretty cool news stories with you, about female empowerment in athletics: 1. Under Armour has launched a new ad campaign called "I will what I want." Most of you probably know about UA's traditional commercials, which are heavy-laden with muscular, macho men screaming and yelling in the locker room, sweating it out on the field, and getting their team pumped up, shouting, "We must protect this house! I will!" Well, recently, UA has been trying to reach out to the female demographic, and I TOTALLY applaud them for their approach. Take, for example, the ad featuring ballerina Misty Copeland (attached in a link below). It's simple yet powerful. It showcases a strong female athlete in what's stereotypically seen as soft and feminine sport. With all of the girly hub-bub going around with companies like Playtex Tampons or Lululemon, who continue to "pretty-up" women athletes instead of valuing female strength and form (just google Lululemon's founder Chip Wilson and you'll find plenty of forehead-smack-inducing sexist quotes) I am SO appreciative that UA has taken the initiative to see us as the athletes we really are. We don't need to be coddled, or dressed in pink spandex; we are a force to be reckoned with! So definitely check out the link! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZY0cdXr_1MA 2. The San Antonio Spurs hire Becky Hammon as NBA's first full-time female coach. Way to go, Becky! Former 16-season WNBA star has been hired by the Spurs as an assistant coach. A quote from the NY Times says that her being hired is an enormous "sign of respect. She did not get hired because she is a woman. She got hired because she is qualified, because they know her personality, how she interacts with players, how she understands X's and O's." Oh, by the way, according to the same article, Hammon was selected to the WNBA all stars SIX times, and in 2011 was named one of the 15 most valuable players in LEAGUE history. What a boss and an inspiration! Read the full story here: http://www.nytimes.com/2014/08/06/sports/basketball/spurs-hire-becky-hammon-as-nbas-first-full-time-female-coach.html?_r=0 Anyways, I hope that these two stories will inspire you girls to keep making moves, in sports and otherwise! Work hard and stand up for yourselves! Becky

Amazon's Fire Phone
All the talk right now in the technology world is Amazon's new smartphone, Fire. Currently most people either love Android or they love the I-Phone, but soon there may be another competitor thrown in the mix. Some of the specifications of the new smartphone include: 1. 4.7- inch display 2. 13 MP camera sensor and a fast f/2 aperture lens - One perk is unlimited storage in Amazon's Cloud Drive 3. USB connector 4. Two stereo speakers and surround sound 5. Mayday-- Amazon's free 24/7 support line - Users can reach Mayday from the phone within 15 seconds 6. Tracks user's head with cameras that are placed all over the phone - Allows for face recognition and hands-free scrolling Amazon's Fire comes on the market July 25th, but you can pre-order now. It won't be long until we know whether the Fire will have the same success as the I-Phone and Android. ~Melissa

Well, really it's just to avoid playing games at all. Great, short, easy read. Worthwhile and thought provoking.
Summer reminders
Hey girls! Summer is upon us! As school is wrapping up, just wanted to remind you of some things to keep in mind for a healthy body and soul this season: 1. First and foremost, ENJOY your time off. Summer is absolutely what you make it, so decide what you want to get out of the season! Whether it be getting a job or internship to make money or gain experience, volunteering, dedicating yourself to a healthier lifestyle (new years resolution style), traveling, catching up with old friends, tackling a project, or just giving your mind a break from school and relaxing during those lazy summer days, make the most of it! I am quickly learning that summers are fleeting; once The Real World comes around, it's not often that you will have the luxury of 2-3 months break from work. For myself, I made a summer bucket list of some fun things I want to accomplish before starting work (road trip, ball games, drive in movies, bbqs, crafts, and running of course!), and I'm doing my best to make the most of these next few months. If you're stuck bored at home and having trouble thinking of ideas, just google "teenage girl summer bucket list"! 2. Remember to stay safe. I'm sure you girls all know the standard safety warnings: sunscreen, hats, hydration, etc. And although we hear these reminders all the time, they are worth repeating!! It is all too easy to get caught up in summer fun, but sunburns, sun poisoning, dehydration, and mosquito bites are sure ways of putting a damper on things. And it's not just these basics; remember that even though school responsibilities have taken a break, common sense is your best tool. If you're traveling, have your wits about you and stay connected with others. Drive safely, swim carefully, and hang out with people you trust. 3. Have the summer YOU want. It's easy to get caught up in the media hype when it comes to the summer season. It seems that all of the photos in magazines and on the internet are of celebrities or friends of friends, who are trying out the latest diet fad just to "look good in a bikini" (instead of having the goal of being healthy), or going tanning so they look better in their Instagram pictures. Don't buy into it! Summer isn't about showing off skin, it's about enjoying the weather and the break from school in the way YOU want to. So sure, if you want to dye your hair or get your bellybutton pierced, go for it! Just make sure it's for the right reasons, and it's because YOU feel empowered, not because you feel like you need to keep up with the summer hype in the media. Have a fabulous summer, ladies!!

Happenings in 5 Pictures
While I was sitting at work the other day with some time on my hands, I was browsing through CNN's website and came across an article entitled "This Week in 35 Photos". Genius. I mean after all, they say a picture is worth 1,000 words, right? I thought the article was without a doubt one of the most creative and brilliant ways to get across the happenings going on in the world right now- and with the small captions at the bottom of each image, I truly feel that I was able to learn something and take away with me a good bit of knowledge in just a short amount of time. So today I thought I would do the same for you…some of the world’s most recent news in just 5 pictures- check it out:
