Environment drawing challenge: Savannah. Quick sketch.
100 Technique Meme: 46. Draw a live human of your choice. (Me!)
Almost absolutely not at all better version of the old Elsie portrait.
Coloured pencil skintone practice.
Attempt #2 at the top, #1 at the bottom. Some quick notes: 1) the tools matter !! 2) skin is really really hard 3) there are like a zillion ways to do the same thing 4) what you’re used to/comfortable with is really hard to change 5) i’m really bad at finishing stuff 6) and I can’t even scan right (will fix laters, tomorrow or smth)

“Skintone practice. Just a ‘hi, I’m still alive’ update. Coloured…”
i don’t know where you saw you failed with skintone, really. It’s coloured pencils and skin have to be coloured
Oh, everywhere! Also, the bad photo hides a lot. ;) But mainly it’s because of the new pencils and I don’t feel like I can ‘read’ the colours just yet… So, in no particular order, the list on how I failed:
I read a guide and it told to use the ‘cream’ as a base. No, no, no, nope. Too yellow! I don’t like it.
I don’t normally blend like that, so the blending is poor, choppy and not realistic enough. (Yes, I don’t do people in coloured pencil. No, I haven’t done anything in them since 2011.)
Realism + coloured media + me = nope. At some point I always go ‘but wouldn’t it be cool to add neon pink into green eyes?!’ and then I do it. -.-
Using too many colours and in varying order. Mainly because testing. Otherwise, see #6, #8, #9.
The one time I try *not* to shade with clear hatching — yup, I do it. And do it well.
Being too lazy/cutting corners. This goes for anything from erasing/toning down the sketch to correct pen motions to layer numbers (ie. closing the surface too soon etc.) to not cleaning my tools often enough. To not bothering to actually look at the ref for the sketch or like at least once per every hour of colouring.
Not bothering to check the room lighting. In normal incandescent, in which I’ve done a lot of the skin as of late, the colours look fine. In daylight, they are yellow.
I’m too shy. I can’t commit to bold strokes. I’m not confident in coloured pencil.
(re: last one:) I’m very messy worker when it comes to pencils. I do a lot of unnecessary work (<- goes for any medium frankly). (Well, maybe not vector. Or ink. Perhaps pastel.)
I have a bad hand (as in ‘no skillz at drawing’/shaky/unsure) and no feel for pressure.
And this is just in light of my own mental blocks: then end result is blotchy and icky. Not really a fail, since I was meaning to do different parts/sections differently in the name of testing. I think those are mostly ok, but of course they don’t fit together. However, at some point my brain translated this as a ‘proper piece’ and now it screams how shit at colouring I am since I can’t make even something so tiny unified and clean. Which, frankly, is a bit disappointing and stuff now that this starts to look like ‘a piece’.
Probably some more on top of that, but those were the big things. :) Maybe you can sense my frustration? ;D
Maybe, it’s just photo and my monitor, but I don’t think this skintone is awful yellow. It can be sunlight on her skin, so if you will use some cold tones in shadows, you can balance it. And realism with usual skintone without some tones that come with light or reflections from clothes is just boring))) Use as many colours as you can :D
About another items of your list of failed ☺ - whatever happens I think you will make great artwork and I hope we will see the result 😘
Oh, it’s the photo! The ‘art’ is *really* bad in person. I’m thinking of scanning the new and that old version side by side just for failure cataloging purposes. :D Not that the new one’s that great: I’m intentionally trying to try out different techniques. And I think I need to scourge an additional skin/flesh pink from somewhere.
Annnnnnd I think I’m just giving up on trying for photoRealism, Not really feeling it anymore. :D
Thanks for the sweet words! ♥

Skintone practice.
Just a ‘hi, I’m still alive’ update. Coloured pencils + realism + skin = fail. Yes there are reasons why I don’t do people in coloured pencil.
