I already feel old enough as it is even though logically I know that seventeen isn’t really old at all

but I’m visiting my grandfather’s grave and once again I’m reminded of how short our lives are

there are so many people here putting down flowers by loved ones’ graves

and honestly it’s breaking my heart because I’m wondering

how long will it take before these people become forgotten?

how long will it take before these people are reduced to mere names on headstones, mere statistics with no story?

two generations? three? eventually all the people who knew my grandfather will be dead and buried and by then, who could visit his grave? who would even care?

he’ll no longer exist as a person; he would just become a name on a family tree, a portrait on a headstone
