it was another regular day of school, people talking, a random group of girls laughing, boys patting each other's backs and going feral, but the only thing you could focus on was the door to the classroom. you always got to school before hyeju, maybe it was because she never wanted to get out of bed on time, maybe it was the fact that she’s a homebody, who knows. all you knew was that watching the door and waiting for her to walk in was something you enjoyed doing in your daily routine. she would always walk in with messy hair, sit next to you, ask for a brush, sort out her hair problem, then prop her elbow on the desk so she could put her head in her hand.

her walking in with messy hair happened so much that now you started to carry a lot more hair products in your bag such as more hair ties, a comb with a parting end so she could part her hair cleanly, and a hair roller incase she ever decided to get bangs again and needed to touch them up.

“here she comes,” you thought to yourself, reaching into your bag to grab your brush as she walked in, making her way towards you.

hyeju set her stuff down before pulling out her chair and sitting down. she looked at you and opened her mouth to say something, but before she could even speak, you handed the brush to her and watched her stare in shock.

“am i really that predictable now?” hyeju asks while brushing through her hair, watching you reach into your bag for another comb.

“yeah, i practically have your whole daily routine down to a T.” you responded back, standing up and taking the brush out of hyeju’s hand, setting it down on the desk before putting both your hands on the side of her head to tilt her head down. you grabbed the comb and turned it around, running the metal end through her hair to part it down the middle cleanly. hyeju felt her face get slightly hot at the action, covering her face with both hands, not paying attention when you sat back down.

“aww, are you blushing~” you teased, receiving a punch on the arm from hyeju who had now moved her hands.

“no! why would i blush over you, you’re just a friend.” she replied coldly, crossing her arms and huffing before facing the front.

“thanks for the brush though..” she mumbled under her breath, making sure you didn’t hear.

class was over and hyeju was excited, she always enjoyed walking out of class and making her way over towards the vending machine to get her favorite drink before going outside into the courtyard to sit under a tree for the entirety of the free time. you knew that though, hell, you would accompany her as she bought the drink and as she walked to the tree even if she attempted to shoo you away, you never budged.

“wait, don’t walk out yet!” you called after hyeju who was already making her way down the steps of the raised desks. you quickly threw your backpack over your shoulders before catching up with the girl who was a little too eager to taste her favorite drink.

you two walked down the corridor and into the vending machine area, but when you two got there, hyeju was heartbroken.

“it’s gone…” she said, her head dropping and her knees giving out, causing her to drop to the floor dramatically.

“don’t be so dramatic.” you laughed quietly to yourself, watching as hyeju lifted her head, turned around, clung to your pants and looked up at you.

“that’s the only drink that makes me happy and it’s gone, they didn’t refill it.” her lip quivered.

“i knew this would happen someday.” you sighed, taking one strap of your backpack off so you could whip it around your body to take something out of it. when hyeju saw you take her favorite drink out of your backpack, her eyes lit up and she jumped to her feet.

you two started walking towards a specific tree that hyeju enjoyed sitting under, but as soon as you started getting closer, almost ready to sit down, hyeju started flailing her hands around.

“shoo, shoo.” she said, moving her hands in a shooing motion to get you to leave.

“but why, i bought you your favorite drink before school, at least pretend like you love me.” you crossed your arms and pouted, watching hyeju turn her head so she doesn’t see your expression.

“and? why would i share my tree of solitude with a friend.” hyeju turned her entire body so her back was facing towards you. you’ve had enough, you wanted to sit with her and you wanted to release every single feeling that you felt towards her, but what was stopping you now?

“what if i don’t want to be friends, what if i want to share your ‘tree of solitude’ as lovers,” you said, putting air quotes around the tree of solitude part. “i like you hyeju, why do you think i always do things that make you happy…” you sighed, bringing your hand up to the bridge of your nose to pinch it. hyeju slowly turned her head, followed by the rest of her body.

“what did you just say?” she asked, feeling breathless.

“i said that i like you, like a lot, so much that it’s crazy.” you stared into hyeju’s eyes, but she struggled to look into yours.

“no you don’t, you can’t because we’re just friends and nothing more, we will never be more than friends.” hyeju got up from her spot, dusting her skirt off before walking towards you and giving her drink back, walking away and back into the building.

you stared at the unopened drink, lips pursed and eyes starting to get blurry at the harsh rejection. you knew that she was cold, but you didn’t think she was that cold.

weeks had passed since that day, you forced yourself to move on and you and hyeju had hardly talked since then. you moved your focus on another girl in class who was kind, would always buy you things, and would always walk with you everywhere. hyeju watched as you sat next to her, laughing and smiling while carressing her arm. she could help but feel jealous in a way.

hyeju walked to her desk, setting her things down, getting ready to turn and ask you for your brush real quick, but you were still at the other girls desk. seeing you act like that towards someone else and not her hurt in a way that she couldn’t explain. hyeju knew you two were just friends and nothing more, but why did her heart hurt when she saw you so happy with someone else? why did she wish she was that girl? why did she wish to be the person who made you smile and laugh?

hyeju rested her head on the desk, hearing the bell ring and the chair next to her pull out before pulling back in. when she turned her head, she saw you and things felt right again even if you two weren’t talking.

“i’ll talk to them about this feeling after school.” hyeju thought to herself, hoping that time would pass quickly so she could get her feelings across.

time passed, but it only seemed to pass quickly because hyeju had napped in every class. when the final bell rang, hyeju slung her backpack over her shoulder, bolting out of the class to the front of the school where you usually were straight away since your last class was near the doors. when hyeju saw you walk out of your class, she was relieved, but when she saw the girl walk up to you and talk to you for a while her heart broke once again.
