aydin was born in sunnyside, queens, the only child of two immigrants from turkey. as the first generation american in the family, aydin was treated like royalty. he was the apple of his father’s eyes, his mother’s darling, and all his aunts and uncles favorites.
his father co-owned a chain of stripclubs in queens and brooklyn. it wasn’t something that was brought up very much at home, aydin only knowing that his father owned his own business until he was older to find out otherwise. it wasn’t something his mother approved of, less because of the gentleman’s club aspect and more because of the business that went on beyond the scenes. the clubs were used for money laundering and other illegal activities that she didn’t want any part of. when she tried to talk her husband out of it, aydin’s mom would end up with bruises that he was embarrassed to look at. the pedestal he put his father on was too high; by the time he realized that his parent’s relationship wasn’t an ideal one, aydin would also come to realize his father’s work wasn’t something he wanted to one day inherit.
but aydin wasn’t a booksmart kind of kid, much to his mother’s chagrin. his teenage years were full of rebellion, getting in trouble with the cops knowing that his father could bail him out of almost anything. none of it was very extreme—until a party with his friends went wrong, and aydin had to watch one of his friends die from a drug overdose. it’s scary enough to sober him up, and make him realize the life he was leading wasn’t the one he wanted forever.
unfortunately, the future his father had carved out for him didn’t really align with the one he wanted for himself. not to mention aydin barely had the grades for college, let alone enough drive to know what he wanted to do with his life. after graduating high school, his father got him a job as a bouncer at one of the clubs, and that was the nail in the coffin for aydin to realize he didn’t want that life. too much he had seen women come and go as employees, starting out bright-eyed and optimistic and ending up with addictions and glazed over expressions.
for a long time aydin stayed in the purgatory that was working as a bouncer there, refusing to take any more substantial work with his father, which in turn ruined his relationship with him. it took spending some time in jail for work he did with his father to realize he had to get out of there. he was twenty-three when he was released and immediately contacted an uncle of his who lived in corpus christi, texas, knowing his father and him are no longer on speaking terms. it only took three weeks for his uncle to get him settled in a new life in texas.
his uncle wasn’t a decent man by any means either, but compared to aydin’s father he was practically a saint. it was through his uncle that he got entwined with the gang he’s now a part of, though aydin sees it more as a brotherhood than anything else. it’s not always the best environment, especially with rivalries of other gangs in the area that sometimes turn dead, but the men and women in the group were there for him when he didn’t really have anyone else.
aydin was twenty-four when he met alev özberk, a man who would very quickly become the best friend he’s ever had. to this day, there’s very little aydin wouldn’t do for alev.
evidently, that would include moving from texas to roswell, new mexico when alev decides to seek out his ex-lover who had left him for dead a few months prior. let the record show aydin has no interest in staying in new mexico for very long, but he had a feeling alev chasing after sparrow would be a bad idea, so he wanted to be by his friend’s side as support when it went down. part of him is banking on the two of them crashing and burning again so they can go back to texas in peace. he’s now been in roswell for about two months now.
aydin’s the kind of man with an extremely hard shell around him, one that could eventually lead to a soft center if anyone bothered to stick around long enough to see it. it’s not that he’s the type of guy that people don’t try with, but he’s certainly the type of person that takes awhile to let someone in—and when most of the time he’s stone-faced and giving nothing in return, it’s hard to want to keep chipping away at his walls.
around roswell aydin is probably known for his resting bitch face, looking as miserable as he feels being in new mexico. he’s not great to make conversation with, and can sometimes come off as rude. unfortunately, whether he comes off rude or not doesn’t really matter to him. but aydin has extremely high morals ( on his own terms, mind you ) . despite smoking cigarettes being a habit he hasn’t been able to get rid of, aydin doesn’t do any kind of drugs, and rarely does he drink to the point of intoxication. in fact, he’s usually the type to watch out to make sure everyone gets home safely, even if it’s begrudgingly so. he has a fierce protective bone in his body that only few get to really see.
when aydin moved to texas, he was able to get a job at the local tattoo parlor cleaning up the shot and eventually becoming his apprentice. luckily drawing has always been something the man was good at, and he quickly rose up in the ranks as a serious tattoo artist. for now at roswell he works at black box, just to make some cash to keep him and alev afloat while they’re in town.
