It was nice to see that she wasn't the only one who ate while shopping. Her thought process was that if she wasn't munching on something, she was going to buy everything in sight that she wanted to eat. "I didn't think that you were going to walk out the door with an empty pack of fishies, and frankly, I'm sure these big box companies can take the loss."
"Just more wondering if I can catch it but also," she moved her bag to reveal her own packet of oreos. "âI normally have a toddler with me that's munching on my snacks so I use her as an excuse if I ever run into a worker." She popped one in her mouth and shrugged. "Snacking while shopping cuts my bill in half."
This time, Ainsley took a small handful of the crackers and popped them directly into her mouth without tossing any of them in the airâ a slightly anxious move since she wasn't sure if the grocery police were about to be called on her or something. But when the other woman spoke words of support, a slow grin formed on Ainsley's features and her shoulders relaxed. "I saw a guy get tackled by a loss prevention guard once for a pack of diapers and some fruit snacks, so I'm just trying to prevent a similar fate." She mused, leaning against the handle of her cart as she spoke.
Ainsley's eyes lit up as Jade continued speaking, wide grin forming on her features at the sight of the Oreos. "Okay yes!" She exclaimed excitedly, "You get it! I mean, I don't have a toddler but there's absolutely nothing wrong with a little snack while you shop. It absolutely keeps the grocery bill down, and in this economy? It's practically a necessity." Nodding as she spoke, Ainsley paused once she was done, grin still on her features as she reached into her bag and held out a singular cracker. "I can toss one, though. See if you can catch it. Bet you can."
"Always, it's my life's goal to scare the living shit out of you and finally get around all those spidey senses you have going on." Aurelia had always been grateful that Ainsley's family had accepted her and Aurelia with open arms and without a question, especially given that she had never even been in a relationship with Aurelia's dad. They had met by chance but having them so close had given Aurelia the family that Maya had always wanted for her. She loved it, but she always found herself needing a break at some point, a chance to drop the smile and actually drink the wine she was pretending she didn't even want that much.
"I thought you were giving up?" Nodding to the cigarette between Ainsley's lips, Maya raised an eyebrow. "You know your mom will smell it a mile off, right?" Lifting her wine glass to her lips, Maya finally took a long drink from it, almost feeling herself relax as she drank. "I really love your family and everything, but your grandmother's sister is really on it tonight with telling me how wonderful your brother is." She really should've snuck the bottle outside. "I'm about two glasses of wine away from telling her I'm more likely to marry you, so maybe I shouldn't drink too much more."
A quiet chuckle left her lips, head shaking as she clicked her lighter off. "Your drunk ass is going to have to try harder than that." She teased, knowing full well that both she and Maya were both sober, wide grin full of affection directed towards the other woman. While Maya wasn't related to the Brennan's by blood or marriage, she was still family. She brought Ainsley's parents their first grandchild and a happiness the entire family hadn't realized was missing until she and Aurelia came into their lives. They may not have been a missing piece, per se, but they were an addition that felt like they'd always belongedâ was always supposed to be there.
At Maya's words, Ainsley let out another chuckle, this time clicking her lighter to life and lighting the end of the stick. "I am." She said, voice full of conviction despite the deep inhale she took, head turning to exhale smoke away from the other woman. "But it's a process. At least that's what all the blogs say." She mused, nodding in agreement about her mother. "Yeah, but the store was out of the gum and those patches make me itchy. Desperate times, you know? Besides, I have perfume... and I took the febreeze from beneath the sink." Watching Maya take a drink, Ainsley took another drag from the cigarette, listening before once again laughter left her lips. For a moment, her gaze glanced towards the house, searching the windows for any prying eyes, and when she found none she turned her attention back to the other blonde. "Yeah, Auntie G is... intense. Like she has some kind of personal stake in all of our love lives. I think that's what happens when everyone else in your life drops you." Shrugging her shoulders, the smirk on Ainsley's features gave away the mischief in her mind. "I mean, it might get her to shut up... or maybe you'll end up hearing how amazing I am at every gathering. So drink wisely."
WHO: ainsley + @nevermindcrs ( ozan ) WHERE: their shared apartment hallway
Coming home from a long day at Red Rock State Park, Ainsley's boot-clad feet dragged a little as she ascended the stairs. She was halfway up when the thought that she should have simply taken the elevator crossed her mind, but still she persistedâ reaching her floor and opening the door, her apartment and a nice bubble bath to relax her muscles within reach, when she heard the ding of the elevator. At first she thought nothing of it, walking down the hall and stopping at her door to untie her dirty boots and leave them on her mat like she did every day, but when her head turned to see which of her neighbors had come home at the same time as her she paused.
The man walking down the hallway towards her was familiar, but only newly so... and only because the two of them had been running into each other at her favorite coffee shop daily for the past week or so. Suddenly, she was very aware of the nearly empty hallway and the fact that her clunkey set of keys was still in the backpack slung on a singular shoulder behind her.
Placing her hands on her hips, one boot off and the other still on her foot albeit unlaced, Ainsley faced the stranger. "We meet again." She said with raised brows. "The coffee shop was coincidence enough but now here? You stalking me or something, mister tall dark and handsome?"
WHO: ainsley + @mayarcsso WHERE: the backyard at some family gathering
Ainsley wasn't someone who'd ever had any vices, as her life had been so supremely structured that the addictive grasp of caffeine, alcohol, or nicotine hadn't ever been able to close around her. But once swimming wasn't the center of her life anymore and she'd joined the military, she'd succumbed to the call (and peer pressure) of cigarettes. It was a habit that'd she'd been trying to quit for the last six years and yet... here she was, in her parents' backyard with a cigarette from a pack she'd bought on the way over that day nestled between her lips. As she went to light it she paused, body tensing as her instincts recognized she wasn't alone before her brain processed it.
Turning, she spotted Maya and let out a relieved sigh that it wasn't her mom. "You trying to sneak up on me?" She teased with a grin, though the lighter stayed in her hand and the stick between her lips. "Because you're gonna have to do better than that."

sanemâs been standing halfway down the aisle longer than sheâd care to admit, a basket hooked loosely over her arm, watching the entire performance unfold like itâs the most entertaining thing sheâs seen all day. thereâs a slow blink, and then another before she speaks. â ⌠you know what, â she says finally, voice warm but threaded with amusement, â hell yeah, i respect the commitment. four for four is impressive. i think that legally qualifies as a skill. â her gaze flicks from the open bag of goldfish to ainsleyâs guilty grin, the corner of her mouth lifting. â and for the record, i wasnât judging you for eating them, â she adds, shifting her weight against the shelf. â i was judging you for risking it all in the cereal aisle like no one was going to witness the crime. â sanem grins, more understanding and clearly not caring that the woman hadn't paid for the snacks first. everyone deserved to be cut some slack every now and then. sanem figured this was one of those times. her gaze flicks back to the goldfish, a hint of a grin tugging at her lips. â but now i feel like i need to see if you can go five for five, â she adds, tilting her head slightly.
Shoulders instantly lowering as hell yeah left the brunette's lips, a grin forming on her features as she pointed at the other woman. "Yes! Yes it is a skill, thank you." She laughed, posture relaxing further as the fact that she wasn't about to be turned in for a crime she wasn't even sure she'd committed. "I wrote a letter as a kid to try and get them to add it into the Olympics but I never heard anything back. I'm still holding out hope, though." She mused, deciding not to add the fact that she'd still competed in the games despite it not being in her own made up category. "Look, maybe the cereal aisle wasn't my best idea but when hunger strikes it won't be ignored, you know? I had to do what I had to do. Sue me for making it a little fun." Her amused grin had her blue eyes sparkling beneath the fluorescent grocery store lights, the challenge of going five for five causing a silly rush of excitement to course through her. "Oh you're so on."
Being aware of her audience didn't change anything, in fact, Ainsley relished in the fact that someone was seemingly as excited as she was now. So she stuck her hand back in the bag and grabbed a couple of goldfish crackers, tossing one up in the air only to catch it with her mouth again, a triumphant grin on her features as she raised her hands in the air. "Yes!"
another twenty-four on and it was his night in the kitchen. it meant restocking what the last shift had gone through and grabbing a few extra sweets for himself and some of his shfit-mates. aisle by aisle, he checked off items on a list, watching as the cart went from bare to full, like he had a whole family waiting for him at home. his brow popped upward and so did the corner of his mouth when ocean blues landed on a woman he never knew how to act around.
he'd bit back a chuckle when she turned, catching him as off guard as he'd apparently caught her. his mouth opened like he knew what to say, but it took him a few extra beats to say anything at all. "yeah, no," he started, another laugh rolling off his tongue as his smile deepened. truth be told, her paying had been the last thing on his mind. "it's just, you uh, you're really good at that."
in his head, it sounded smoother, but aloud? maverick felt the rush of heat climbing up the back of his neck. "catching them," he added, like there was any room for confusion on what he'd meant by that. "practice much?"
Her body relaxed when realization hit her, the familiar man wasn't going to try and get her arrested or kicked out for snacking while shoppingâ that much she knew. Instead, her own laughter echoed his and her grin grew, shoulders shrugging this time as if to silently convey it was no big thing. "Oh, what is much?" She mused, leaning against the handle of her cart, another soft laugh escaping her lips. "Me and my siblings used to see who could catch the most without missing, my brother actually ate an entire package of goldfish once. Got on a tire swing to celebrate and threw it all up." She grimaced slightly at the memory but her smile never faltered. "So yeah, I guess you could say I've had some practice. You wanna try?" She asked, brow raised as she pulled a little orange cracker from the bag and held it up like she was going to throw it to him.
WHO: ainsley + @nathanxmeyer WHERE: red rock state park, after a sar 'mission'
They were sitting on the open tailgate of the running SAR truck, Tucker in the cab soaking up the AC after receiving plenty of treats and water after finding the missing, injured hikers they'd been dispatched to locate. Ainsley herself was sipping on a bottle of water, going over the events of the day in her head like she usually did after a 'mission'. Despite it being the first time she and Nate had been back out together since their incident, they worked together in perfect harmonyâ like alwaysâ but something was still off. And Ainsley wasn't someone who allowed things like this to fester, especially when it could mean life or death.
"You hesitated." She said finally, voice soft but firm as she turned to look at him. "Why?"
WHO: ainsley + @danielaxherrera WHERE: the kitchen of the paloma
It wasn't like Ainsley couldn't cook. She grew up in a diner, could make an amazing loaf of sourdough bread, absolutely slayed at making a bowl of ramen... but that didn't mean she particularly liked doing it. Which was how she'd found herself perched in her little corner of her best friend's job, eat a delicious plate of food that she didn't have to cook or do the dishes to, with a wide grin on her features as she watched Dani be completely in her element. "You know, you make this all look way too easy." She said around a mouth-full of food, quiet laughter escaping her at how garbled the words came out so she ensured she chewed her food well before swallowing, washing it down with a drink of water before continuing. "What time to do you get off, today? Late again or will you have some time to get drinks later?"
WHO: ainsley + @sedonastart (2/4) WHERE: sullivan's grocery
Pushing a half-full buggy as she walked down the cereal aisle, Ainsley, unable to deny herself something to nibble on as she shopped for the upcoming week's groceries, brought a bag of goldfish up to the top of the cart and popped it open. She paused her walking to grab a box of Honey Bunches of Oats before her attention turned back to the now open bag of goldfish. Without any further thoughts, she reached in and took a small handful, tossing one up in the air and catching it with a triumphant grin as she began to move once more and continue her shopping.
She'd gone four for four when she realized she'd had an audience. Bashfully, she offered the other person a grin and a guilty shrug. "What?" She asked before continuing, "I'm going to pay for it, I promise. It's just been a long day and I'm starving."
