Hey everyone, this blog hasn’t been so active lately, but I am currently unemployed (and have been job searching for 4 months) and a job I was offered fell through right before I was supposed to start (long story - the employer was at fault). I’d like to see if I can sell some of my old books to bring in a bit of cash.

I get that they were trying to make The Hobbit into a grander scale conflict to make the tone fit with Lord of the Rings, but WHYYYY. It's called the LONELY MOUNTAIN because it's in the middle of nowhere. It is strategically useless for anything but itself.

Dear everyone who found *that* Tauriel scene to be ridiculous:
ALLOW ME TO INTRODUCE YOU TO
ACTUAL QUICK-CHANGE EXPERT ARWEN UNDOMIEL
GIANT FLOATING HEAD ELROND HALF-ELVEN
All of these scenes were cheesy, just Tauriel’s was the MOST cheesy and worked the least well in context.
Also, Arwen’s scene actually makes sense if you look more closely. In this scene, Arwen should actually be Glorfindel according to the book. When Glorfindel rescues Frodo, Frodo sees him as he appears in the Undying Lands:
With his last failing senses Frodo heard cries, and it seemed to him that he saw, beyond the Riders that hesitated on the shore, a shining figure of white light…
'I thought that I saw a white figure that shone and did not grow dim like the others. Was that Glorfindel then?'
'Yes, you saw him for a moment as he is upon the other side: one of the mighty of the First Born. He is an Elf-lord of a house of princes.'
Note that Arwen, in this scene, is wearing a different dress the way Frodo sees her than she is in reality. This is CLEARLY meant to convey the idea of seeing her as she would be in the Undying Lands (it’s even white, as Glorfindel’s figure is described in the book), rather than literally meaning she randomly changed clothes during the scene. However, Tauriel’s happy-glowy-whatever scene does NOT make sense in this context, because she is a Silvan elf. The Silvan elves never went to the Undying Lands; she does not have the status that would give her the kind of powers Glorfindel (or in the movie, his replacement Arwen) would have.
The Elrond scene, again, is still cheesy, but it’s basically Frodo’s weird dream that he’s having while hearing Elrond’s voice healing him, not a depiction of reality. Because of that, it works.
Let me just remind you that it was revealed by one of the orcs that the head of the arrow that hit Kili was made from a Morgul blade which incidentally was exactly what Frodo was stabbed with and Arwen came to cure (using athelas initially just like Tauriel by the way).So we have Frodo, weak and half delirious, being helped by an elf and then we have Kili, suffering from the exact same thing, weak and delirious, being helped by an elf.
What I’m trying to say here is that the scene with Kili and Tauriel is basically the exact same scene as the one with Frodo and Arwen. It stands to reason that they would experience similar reactions to the poison, and while Tauriel might be a Silvan elf she’s still an elf, and most elves appears to be celestial creatures of alien beauty, especially to one delirious.
Have you read The Silmarillion? It does NOT stand to reason. The phenomenon with Arwen (which was REALLY a phenomenon with Glorfindel that they gave to Arwen to cut down on the number of characters) has NOTHING to do with her being beautiful and Frodo being delirious. He literally saw her as she ACTUALLY appears in the Undying Lands. Tauriel, as a Silvan elf, has never been to the Undying Lands, nor had any of her ancestors. (There is an issue here because Arwen HASN'T been to the Undying Lands either but again, she is taking Glorfindel's place in this situation, and the scene is straight out of the book based on Glorfindel, who HAS been there.)
And so it begins..
So I was talking to one of my younger sisters about this last night. We both knew this scene was coming, but the wording of “Orc mutant” had surprised me. You don’t really hear the word mutant thrown around in high fantasy very often! But my sis is the LoTR master (a step below Stephen Colbert), and she reminded me that Orcs are mutants. They’re elves that have been mutilated and warped into an entirely different species. So Legolas is saying that Gimli is an Orc TWICE OVER. Vicious.
But man, this just gets me even more hyped thinkin’ about their friendship in LoTR. I think it’s one of the most important plots going on in the series, and it perfectly fits into the overall theme of small acts of kindness and love being more powerful than hatred.Â

Their friendship undoes centuries and generations worth of built-up hatred and mistrust between their races. Hatred that was passed on from their fathers and forefathers. And after the War of the Ring? They went back and rebuilt their kingdoms together, and Legolas invited Gimli to cross the sea into the Undying Lands.Â
It may not be the most important story going on in this series, but it’s my personal favorite.
