it is important to cling to wonder btw
many people grow up and forget what it feels like to be a child. we must remember this. we have to remember what a joy it is to play. to learn. to build connections. to grow. to experience. we must hold onto the things that awe us. we are changed by what we love
🙋🏻♀️ As a Children’s Librarian, I highly recommend some middle grade literature as a practical way to help maintain wonder and your ability to see things as a child.
(Also reading classic lit in the kids section is an acceptable way to run into children not related to you- also very healthy for a youthful mind).
I recommend: The Secret Garden, The Wind in the Willows, Winnie the Pooh, The Borrowers, and So You Want to Be a Wizard (Young Wizards series).
For more advanced Whimsy (you’ve got to already be pretty childlike, or they will just discourage you) try: Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, the Wizard of Oz, The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making.
Have fun! 👋 📚
I am not surprised by that use of Alice in Wonderland at ALL. To be so real for a moment- Alice in Wonderland is not for enjoying your childhood, it is to better commiserate with a child going through a “no good very bad day,” which has a very different flavor as a kid than it does as an adult.
When an adult has a bad day, the worst part is knowing that somehow this is entirely your fault (even if logically this is not true). For a kid the worst part is everyone telling you how to act and feel about it and expecting you to ALREADY know completely arbitrary made up rules.
Idk if you were just talking about the ever shifting weirdness in reference to your epilepsy, but I bet how the adults reacted to you and your handling of it played a part in your decision to use that text specifically.
All adults getting overly frustrated with small children in thier charge should be made to read this book. Everything is fantastic and wonderful as a kid, sure, but also utterly baffling and frustrating at all times.
Part of holding onto wonder is being able to empathize with new life around you. “Yeah, it’s a bit much bud. I hear you.” *pats*
Woohoo peer review!
Actually back on LiveJournal, I would use the tag Being Alice when I would write during or after one of my partial seizures that let part of me kind of interact with the world through glass. When my disability lawyer talked with me in 2010 about proof of seizures and cerebral palsy spasming, we decided to print out all my blog entries under the Being Alice tag. It was 70 pages. The SSDI judge called it poetry. I won my case in 2012.
So yes, it certainly is the ever shifting weirdness! In fact, I have a headmate, an alter, who opens the door to Wonderland's rabbit hole and guides me through until we make it to the shore and I am handed off to another headmate for recovery.
My seizure guide named herself Alicia. Her hair is blonde and past her waist, she wears blue jeans and a white tank top, and her smile is extremely sharp. Flowers bloom where she stomps her black combat boots. She's very good at card games and tea parties.
Isn’t the human mind just amazing? How utterly marvelous.
How wonderful, that a place of fiction existed that your mind could use to link medical mental distress to. 📕 🥰
And what a great guide that is! Someone who has been before and will lead you through, and is just powerful and scary enough to handle the big scary thing. 🖼️ 🧚🏻
I am terribly sorry you had to deal with epilepsy, with people not believing you- to the point of going to court! I am, however, very glad you had help. Such fantastic help as someone who stomps flowers to life with combat boots. 🥾 🌼
What an image! What an amazing person to know.
I can see why you like The Fairyland Series. You clearly know fairyland very well. 📖 🤩
I'm writing a whole novel about disabled psychics whose powers are also disabled, so I've had these character types in my head forever! Makes sense they would form a health care team of a kind.

More than "here in the Southern Hemisphere we have inverted seasons :)" thing, which is TECHNICALLY true, I would go a step further and encourage to think about that "much of the world does not exactly has a spring-summer-fall-winter season sequence as they show in cartoons"
I will scream about this to anyone who listens forever. AUSTRALIA DOES NOT HAVE "ENGLISH SEASONS BUT BACKWARDS" and the insistence that it does creates a massive layer of alienation from the natural world.
I never really realised how much difference it makes until I went to England and realised that here the change of seasons is an obvious, visible, physical change in the world. Like, everything REALLY IS orange and foggy in autumn! In spring there are flowers EVERYWHERE, so much more than any other season, and the trees really do have all blossom and no leaves. Even if it doesn't snow, in winter there's frost all the time and the trees are bare and the sky is visibly greyer all the time. You don't need to be told "this date is the first day of spring", you can SEE IT (although this is getting way messier and less precise due to climate change).
By contrast, most places in Australia the seasons we're taught feel like arbitrary categories - and is it any surprise considering they're colonial constructs? Orange-leaved autumn and blossom-covered spring is a cartoon stereotype with no relevance on a continent where ALL NATIVE TREES ARE EVERGREEN!! Snowy winters are a joke in the desert, and even sunny summers don't ring particularly true considering that much of the country is in the tropics, where summer means monsoons - not that I've ever seen the concept that WE HAVE A MONSOON SEASON taught at an Australian school.
Most Indigenous nations around Australia had six or more seasons, revolving around wet and dry times as much as hot and cold, and marked by the appearances of certain native animals and flowers. Schools need to start teaching the real seasons, and explaining that climate cycles are too complex to generalise globally, or else we will keep raising generations who view the natural world as hostile and unpredictable and climate predictions as generally irrelevent and frequently wrong - and I'm sure I don't need to spell out why that's a problem in the era of climate crisis.
i want to add that 40% of the world's population lives in the tropics, and the 4 season model just doesn't make much sense for a lot of places in there. usually it's just the wet season/monsoon season and the dry season. it's often hot year round.
the 4 season model as you and i know it is a european invention, though 4 season models aren't unique to europe! most notably china has the same type of season subdivision.
in general the way humans define seasons is largely subjective and varies across cultures. the one you were taught is not at all universal!

fun fact: squall is probably SO sleep deprived when giving morrigan lessons. like he usually shows up at night (let's say 7-9pm?) and the time difference is 9 hours (i think) so depending on the day he's waking up at 4-6am. do we think he sets his alarm and wakes up like 'time to deal with my goth teenage apprentice at 4am why did i do this again'

i do find the brief interlude between morrigan's 'just lock her in a room and make her hate herself' education and the 'ok i guess we'll put her with those freaks in the basement they might know what to do' education kinda funny, because it's implied they just...put her in goth classes? talking to dead people? sure! random prophecy class? yeah! witchcraft-familiar class? why not! they saw her dressing in all black all day every day and ran with it because where else do we put the eldritch being in a thirteen-year-old's body
Magistrate Astarion never existed. (hear me out)
as far as I know –please correct me if I’m wrong – literally the only things we know about the Before Times for Astarion are: he was a magistrate. He was attacked because the Gur disagreed with one of his rulings.
and as much as I would love to know about every detail of his life before. I think it was very intentional and important that we (the player) don’t get to know anything else. there could have been some random book that you find somewhere in the city as flavor text that describes laws and policies and casually credits Magistrate Ancunín amongst others that contributed, (similar to the Ban List in the Waning Moon) but there isn’t. because Magistrate Ancunín does not exist anymore.
so much that he effectively Never existed.
he doesn’t exist so much that Astarion can’t remember what fucking color his eyes used to be. something you see a thousand times a day, x39 years of days. something you just know without thinking.
Cazador changed every aspect of him so deeply, he took everything and more, that that man who was attacked by the Gur may as well have never existed.
“I made you to be consumed.”
he’s already gone. you have consumed every piece of who that man was and replaced it with fear, anger, doubt, self loathing, fear, bitterness, depression, and more fear. he is a completely different man now. he can’t even conceptualize the idea of anyone genuinely liking him anymore. congratulations, Cazador.
if Durge didn’t Bhaalspawn too close to the sun (kickstarting the events of the game), no one would have thought about him after the ritual was completed and he was dead. maybe a local barkeep wondering where that weird family that gave them so much business went, but assuming their family moved away. maybe Godey when he dumps the remains of the spawn into the chasm and reminisces on how “sweet” Astarion “sang” for him.
“what if Astarion had parents, siblings, family, friends, etc”
he was out being forced to find victims for Cazador every night for 192 years and not a single person that he knew in life saw him at a tavern and thought to ask about that? he knew people in baldurs gate. he worked in baldurs gate. he lived in baldurs gate. he was buried in baldurs gate. he is an elf, his family are elves. they’d still be alive. they’d have questioned how he’s here. but no one came for him.
was he as alone in life as he was in the kennel? it doesn’t matter. for all intents and purposes, Magistrate Ancunín simply never existed. just a name on a rock, covered in overgrowth and tucked into the back of the cemetery.

I have seen a criminally-low amount of appreciation for the best character in phm: Carl. he's a straight-talkin' security guy with a sense of humour. he's Grace's scientist-minder and biggest enabler. Mr 'we don't have a budget... but hey the sun is dying money'll be worthless if this fails anyway so have at it'. he's bowling with tape and tinfoil in a home depot. he's rocking the sunglasses. he's buying 40 packs of skittles and handing them out to everybody in the building. he's with the government. all of them. he's the layman to Grace's scientist who can provide the outside perspective he needs to solve the astrophage conundrum. he's "Carl, are you sitting?" / "No, I'm standing like a grown man." / "We're fathers." / "Now I'm sitting." he is one of the characters of all time
