Of all the people Gavin had loved through the years, only his father had loved him back. Even now, with all he'd done to get his sibling out of prison, all they saw in him was failure; what Gavin failed to mention was that the original plan had Melissa dying, not wearing a bulletproof vest.
In all of this, Melissa was the only one he failed. And yet it was Melissa who drew him closer-- in the touch of their hands, in the weight of her cheek against his palm. She looked so fucking beautiful like this, and when her touch fell away, he hadn't thought to remove his hand.
"I don't know about being good," he murmured, "but it has to mean something that you fit so well in my hand."
The way she shifted in his hold confirmed suspicions he'd only been hoping for (and in the moment it didn't matter that his sibling called him out for it, nor that the police knew he was attached-- not when Melissa felt the same way, not when she was looking at him so intently). As Melissa leaned in, Gavin met her halfway, and the hand on her cheek was matched by its twin as he held her on either side.
Nobody else deserves you, he thought, pressing firm into Melissa's space as their mouths sought that perfect slide of lips on lips. Gavin had heard her voice break as she called her ex-husband, disappointed in how he handled their children; Melissa was never meant to be so sad, so overlooked.
When their mouths separated, Gavin's thumbs stroked either side of Melissa's cheekbones, the look in his eyes intense with certainty. Her eyes were liquid honey, practically molten in the low light, and he couldn't look away.
"I can look after you," he promised.
Then he kissed her again, shameless and certain. One hand slid down, caressing the side of Melissa's neck as he sucked lightly at her bottom lip.
Gavin's lips brushed hers as he spoke between kisses, gentle despite how frayed his nerves felt. He wasn't supposed to make any decisions, not when his sibling was still around, and yet-- "Come with me when this ends, Melissa. When it's safe, we'll pick your children up, and I swear I'll look after them, too."
"I'll make you happy, baby. I promise."
Thumb brushing the corner of Melissa's mouth, Gavin's tongue curved against her lips in a silent plea for her to part them for him.
