Happy pride month Arthur! [Jake shrugs] Ya know- I'm just assuming based on how many birds and alligators you've kissed. No judgement.

But I know what you are.

"What an extraordinary accusation," Arthur answered, eyebrows raising, gaze unimpressed. "I've been called many things, Jake Lockley. Cult leader, fanatic, murderer - but never, to my recollection, have I been accused of that."

How fascinating it was, to accuse him of sleeping with the gods.

"Of course I don't mind. In fact, I'm glad you did - finding the courage to reach out can be harder than people realize. We spend so much of our time worrying that we're intruding or that our thoughts are burdens, or that our presence itself requires permission." He offered a smile. "It doesn't. You're welcome here. You and I are no different than the mountains or the skies - we all have a place together."

When you feel very down, how can you lift yourself up again? (For Arthur)

"You don't," Arthur answered simply, shaking his head a fraction. "People look for happiness like it's a destination. As if you could distract yourself long enough, or indulge yourself long enough, then you'll eventually arrive somewhere free of pain. But that place doesn't exist. Pain isn't an interruption of life, it's part of it."

He shifted some, seated on the floor and bending his knee, just enough to rest his chin upon it. "When I feel low, I try not to run from it. I sit with it. I ask what it's trying to teach me. Grief, loneliness, regret... all of them hurt, yes, but they are rarely punishments. More often than not, they're only there to tell you what you've neglected. A wound hurts because it exists, but ignoring it isn't what heals it."

Arthur didn't bother to point out that the nurses that Jake had killed likely were quite innocent, instead just nodding and letting Jake talk his way through it. Looking away, not bothering to hide the fact that he truly didn't care - Jake sometimes felt like a miniature form of Khonshu.

His focus snapped back, of course, at the rather direct suggestion that he had dated the god. Arthur didn't deny it, shockingly, though his face showed more than enough offense.

"Khonshu has dated everyone?" he echoed, eyebrows raising. "Well then. By extension, he's dated you, hasn't he?"

Red button means that only you and those who push the red button will survive.

Blue button means that everyone will survive only if more than 50% of people push the blue button.

The question is amusing, only because it chooses to disguise itself as a game. A thing pretending to be far more complicated than it is, perhaps a question that deserved more thought than Arthur was willing to give it.

"What makes life that important?" Arthur asks in return. "What makes fear so much more powerful than conscience? What tells you that survival is virtue? What makes you believe that self preservation would justify anything? That if everyone else might betray you, then you should betray them first?"

He offers time for an answer, not that he needs it.

"Panic," he informs. "Fear. Which means the real question isn't what button to push - it's who's pushing the button. You? Or your worries?"

Arthur gives a moment for that to be considered, eyebrows raised in expectation. "Even if I knew with perfect certainty that no one else would do it, I would choose blue. Your values shouldn't be weak enough to change when they don't benefit you."

"How long are you going to keep up this wounded silence?" [Any verse Arthur]

There was a stillness in him, something that settled in too slowly, something that collapsed inward rather than outward. How common that was for Arthur, to take things and turn them inside; contained, controlled. How he had always been, and likely how he always would be; perhaps it was how he got under the bird's skin so easily. A god who could control nothing, and a man who could control everything.

"… I wondered, for a time, if you could tell the difference," he replied, voice low. The pause that followed was neither dramatic nor for effect, but rather a careful choosing of his next words; "Between silence and the… absence of anything left worth saying."

His gaze drifted in front of himself, refusing to meet Khonshu's. Not avoiding him, but not greeting him; as if the conversation were happening at a distance that he couldn't decide whether or not to cross.

"I gave you everything I had," he continued. "Every thought. Every doubt. Every… piece of myself that might have complicated the version of me that you preferred." His fingers tightened against his bad leg, thumb rubbing over the muscle. "… Including him."

The words were placed as cleanly as anything else he said, gaze still refusing to greet the god. Eyes still staring forward at nothing. "You called him irredeemable." His brows rose and fell at the word. "… You do enjoy that word. It makes things simpler, it… absolves you of the burden of being patient.

"He was difficult, yes. Damaged. Capable of harm, but he wasn't what you said he was. He was capable of change, Khonshu. I watched it, and I thought…" Arthur trailed off, not out of lack of words but out of a recognition that it wasn't worth saying.

Arthur shifted, pulling his legs up closer to him, resting his chin on his knee. "You asked me to kill him, and I refused. And yet the outcome remained the same - I've been trying to understand the purpose of that. If the end was inevitable, then what, exactly, was the point of asking me at all?"

His eyes finally landed on the god, staring him in the eye, gaze too calm for the discussion at hand. "If the result doesn't change, then my choices aren't choices. And if that's the case, your question becomes rather simple."

Arthur ran his tongue over the inside of his teeth, staring at Khonshu as if he were currently deciding something.

"I am not wounded by silence, no. I'm… adjusting to the absence of anything that was ever there to lose."

Where was your stranger danger when I kidnapped you, huh?

"... What you did to me was inevitable, Jake Lockley," Arthur answered simply. "No amount of... hiding from a stranger would keep you from doing what Khonshu demanded." He wasn't stupid enough to think otherwise; Arthur knew that Jake was like Arthur had once been. Loyal to a fault, ready to do anything Khonshu commanded; a blind faith that it was the right thing to do. A desire for a reason, a purpose.

"I would like to remind, though, that most don't consider a mental hospital to be an unsafe place to be in. You took a lot of lives to get to me. I wonder how you convinced Khonshu that was the right thing to do."

Sorry to all for being so very MIA. I very much do want to come back, I've missed writing a lot, but I'm not going to be able to be very active. I'll be on a slow queue and will pop in when I can, but I can't promise too much more than that

Unfortunately, I'm someone who has lived with a heart condition, and it's been getting a bit worse as of recently. I think I've been pushing myself to do too much, and it's been catching up to me - if I don't get around 10-11 hours of sleep I end up feeling awful, so between sleeping + work + school, I'm a bit out of time and energy.

Please expect me to be back, but also expect me to be slow; probably just 1-2 posts a day. I have dropped a few threads, but my tracker is up to date.
