Do you think he had a breakdown at some point about the hugs. Rocky can’t actually hug him back. Rocky can’t hold him or touch him without hurting him. Because I’m now thinking about it. I'm thinking about him hugging rocky before just slowly tearing up and crying because he’s just… he’s not hugging rocky, he can’t feel rocky, he can't wrap his arms around his carapace and rocky can’t wrap his arms around him.
The Lord of the Rings takes place in a world that’s analogous to Medieval England, and yet there’s New World crops like potatoes and tobacco. That’s not actually a plot hole: Tolkien himself explains, in the prologue to Fellowship, that pipeweed has been brought from overseas by Numenorians, it follows that hobbits came by potatoes the same way.
But the Hobbit and the early chapters of Fellowship contain much more jarring and numerous anachronisms than post-Columbian-exchange plants. There are metaphors referring to gunpowder, guns, a train engine and express trains! There are commodities that are from the Old World, but were not widespread in Medieval Europe, such as coffee, tea and fireworks. Even silk might be a bit of a stretch. And then there are tons of things that could or technically did exist in a medieval world, but we definitely associate them with later eras: top hats, public museums, clocks small enough to put on a mantelpiece, football, golf, mothballs, umbrellas, metal pens, water bottles instead of waterskins, Christmas crackers, and then there’s the entire question of the hobbits’ written culture. Paper appears widely available and cheap, not everyone is literate but there seems to be a large literate middle-class that owns multiple books, has long legal battles with paperwork involved, sends tons of letters, sends written party invitations, uses anachronistic pre-cut envelopes. Letters aren't carried by random servants, there's an official postal service and a post office: this all implies a level of literacy and written culture more typical of an Early Modern-ish setting. Or Regency? Or Victorian? But definitely super not Medieval.
Conclusion one: when Tolkien started writing The Hobbit he very much did not know where he would end up, which is thematically appropriate.
Conclusion two: Tolkien semi-intentionally wrote the Shire as low-tech but still very recognisably similar to modern England, so that the hobbits leaving its safety to enter an Actual Fantasy World would feel more relatable. (LOTR is a portal fantasy.)
Conclusion three: these are not the aspects of worldbuilding that actually matter, it is actually good that Tolkien is obsessed with mythology and linguistics and only sketches the rest of the worldbuilding out as far as it's necessary for the plot, no need to sweat the small stuff. You should only write about agriculture and taxation if you care about them as much as Tolkien cared about unhinged comparative linguistics.
Conclusion four: in a Watsonian sense, we can take on the conceit that Tolkien didn't write the books, only translated them from a real source, the Red Book of Westmarch. We may then proceed to blame any perceived inconsistencies on his translation.
Since the book serves Conclusion Four as the intended frame, with the narrator-character specifically making choices in Hobbit, Fellowship and RotK to support this, it’s useful to consider the Big Man Narrator himself - a character that is invisible to most people’s reading - and to recognise where his voice intrudes. https://www.tumblr.com/elodieunderglass/808108091104215040/concerning-things-about-hobbits-part-1-the

When you consider that we are being given a “rediscovered history” of still-living-but-very-marginal humans, by an academic addressing us as a student, it adds a whole meta-story. (And simply accepting the Big Man at 100% face value, part of the landscape, and dismissing anachronisms as errors - reinforces the unexamined framework of the British scholar that can present “we’ve driven hobbits to extinction but dw about it” and not have anyone even NOTICE.)
Rocky sees alien. Rocky sees Grace. ✨✨
“scientists don’t want you know” is a phrase that always cracks me up because if you actually meet a scientist they will be shaking and crying like an overstimulated chihuahua with the need to let you know

(photos by Bill Watterson and an octopus)
I think this is the best scientist photograph I have ever seen.
But people didn’t believe him on reddit. So Watterson made the photo sequence into a gif.
Here’s the gif for anyone curious.
Hieronymus Bosch
He looks a bit different than I imagined.
here’s some project hail mary studies i did recently in heavypaint
someone sent me an anon ask about rocky meeting eva and i tried to post it not once but twice and tumblr ate it both times so now im just regular posting it here
i think ryland would grow to understand stratt’s choice with time, and even thank her logic of it because it led to his meeting of rocky, but i dont think he’d ever really forgive her for what she did to him
(Ryland had to prep rocky before they touched down to meet Stratt so he wouldnt charge her at first sight)
thank you for the request :o)
Things I wish I had read in "beginner" sewing tutorials/people had told me before I started getting into sewing
You have to hem *everything* eventually. Hemming isn't optional. (If you don't hem your cloth, it will start to fray. There are exceptions to this, like felt, but most cloth will.)
The type of cloth you choose for your project matters very much. Your clothing won't "fall right" if it's not the kind of stretchy/heavy/stiff as the one the tutorial assumes you will use.
Some types of cloth are very chill about fraying, some are very much not. Linen doesn't really give a fuck as long as you don't, like, throw it into the washing machine unhemmed (see below), whereas brocade yearns for entropy so, so much.
On that note: if you get new cloth: 1. hem its borders (or use a ripple stitch) 2. throw it in the washing machine on the setting that you plan to wash it going forward 3. iron it. You'll regret it, if you don't do it. If you don't hem, it'll thread. If you don't wash beforehand, the finished piece might warp in the first wash. If you don't iron it, it won't be nice and flat and all of your measuring and sewing will be off.
Sewing's first virtue is diligence, followed closely by patience. Measure three times before cutting. Check the symmetry every once in a while. If you can't concentrate anymore, stop. Yes, even if you're almost done.
The order in which you sew your garment's parts matters very much. Stick to the plan, but think ahead.
You'll probably be fine if you sew something on wrong - you can undo it with a seam ripper (get a seam ripper, they're cheap!)
You can use chalk to draw and write on the cloth.
Pick something made out of rectangles for your first project.
I recommend making something out of linen as a beginner project. It's nearly indestructible, barely threads and folds very neatly.
Collars are going to suck.
The sewing machine can't hurt you (probably). There is a guard for a reason and while the needle is very scary at first, if you do it right, your hands will be away from it at least 5 cm at any given time. Also the spoils of learning machine sewing are not to be underestimated. You will be SO fast.
I believe that's all - feel free to add unto it.

Feeling emotional about the concept of Rocky being able to hear Grace’s heartbeat. Like what do you mean he was alone for 46 years and he had no choice but to sleep without anyone watching, terrified cause he’s never had to do that before in his life, but then he befriends this alien and he’s weird and soft and his internal organs make noise and maybe that’s annoying at first but it becomes something soothing, a steady presence, always there. It speeds up when he gets nervous or excited and steadies out, calm and predictable, when he sleeps - and it’s always the first thing Rocky hears when he wakes up.
And what do you mean that the first time Rocky fell asleep after they parted ways to save their respective planets, he had to wake up to silence instead of Grace’s heartbeat.
My poor coworker got a fucking earful today
Do you think they covered up Ryland being forced into space until later when nations are inevitably at war and Stratt is on trial and things come up? Do you think there are audio recordings of Grace begging for his life and his need to stay with the kids that resurface later on? Do you think those kids, now teens or adults, hear those and realize he was just as scared as they were?
The first day in Teacher Grace’s class is widely acknowledged amongst the Eridian children as one of the most exciting days of school, partly because what could be cooler than being taught by the alien schoolteacher who helped save your entire planet, but especially because the first day is the day when Teacher Grace helps everyone choose their human names.
The students all take turns telling him about themselves, what they like, what they want to do, who they are, and Grace in turn tells them about the names they make him think of, and the stories (fictional and real) that go with them, and the kids get to pick the ones they like.
It’s a beautiful exchange of cultures and personal experiences, and every class is unique (one class ends up entirely named after niche Star Trek characters after requests from multiple students result in “Earth culture storytime” devolving into Grace infodumping about his favorite show and everyone becomes obsessed).
Grace is known for being a good deal more forgetful than the average Eridian (“leaky space brain for leaky space blob” Rocky once jokingly put it) but he has never once forgotten a student’s name.
Thinking about Rocky’s just straight up trauma that no one seems to ever talk about?? Freaking the FUCK out at Grace imitating sleeping before they really had the words to fully understand each other when he barely knew him. Pleading with Grace, turning to hostility in denial, then to offering six year’s worth of his own trip home when Grace tells him he’s going to die in space. The panic, screaming Grace’s name when he’s unresponsive through the excessive centrifugal force scene, his words aren’t even being translated for the audience but the desperation is so strong it doesn’t matter. Putting himself through an atmosphere that is a very, very far cry from what he’s made to live in to save him. All for an alien he’s known for an earth year or so tops, which is so much less for him than for us. Watching 22 of his crewmates die slow painful deaths without even knowing what was happening obviously did a NUMBER on him but god i see no one talking about it
