Introduced at the Actors Lab in Los Angeles, Dorothy Dandridge and Marilyn Monroe became great friends. The two were young actresses who dreamed of reaching Hollywood superstardom. Marilyn would visit Dorothy at her Hilldale apartment and the two would discuss their career aspirations, and they occasionally talked about men. They both took lessons from musical arranger and composer Phil Moore. “Dottie had a little white rug in front of the fireplace, and Marilyn used to lie on that rug, and many a night she cried, mostly about her relationships,” said Dorothy’s friend Juliette Ball. When Marilyn divorced husband Joe DiMaggio, she called Dorothy and the two friends cried together on the telephone, and being the good friend she was Dorothy offered her love and support. Dorothy and Marilyn’s friendship is an enduring one. These two legendary women built a beautiful friendship that saw no color. In their later years they didn’t see each other as often, but were both very much aware of each other lives, through their mutual friend Peter Lawford. Dorothy said, “I never thought of Marilyn as a tragic figure. She was full of joy and excitement for living. Sure she had her moods but mostly she was a happy girl. Her problem was in believing. She believed people even after they disappointed her over and over.” Both accomplished so much in their respective careers, and leave rich legacies.
