I am not someone who is 100% against breeding dogs whatsoever. That position doesn’t even make any logical sense, because come on…. you have to allow breeding at some point if we want to continue having dogs as pets. Also, there are specific circumstances where responsible breeding is necessary (certain kinds of working/service dogs for example).
What I am against: puppy mills, people who breed doodles or brachycephalic breeds as a “side hustle,” and people who choose allow their mutts to breed simply because “her puppies would be so cute and we could make some money from it anyway.”
The case against puppy mills is pretty self explanatory at this point. As for people who do it as a side hustle…. breeding dogs responsibly isn’t just a thing you do on the side. Are you doing genetic testing? Are you breeding for temperament, or are you just going for looks? Are you socializing the puppies properly? Are you giving them good veterinary care, and getting them all their required vaccines? Also, stop! Breeding! Brachycephalic dogs! Stop it!
As for the average owner who thinks it would be fun to have a litter of puppies or two…. okay fine, but are you prepared to take on that additional cost? Are you going to put in the work to make sure they all go to good homes, and not just put up a sign that says “puppies for sale!” Like, do you actually know what you’re getting in to? No? Then don’t breed your dogs!
I mean, we already have conversations about “am I really ready to care for this pet?” Why so many people think this somehow doesn’t also apply when they suddenly want to breed their pets is beyond me.
If you are prepared to deal with all that additional cost and responsibility, and you do so ethically, great, fine, go ahead and breed. If not, then spay and neuter!
I love the sentiment around the Artemis III astronauts announcement being, across the board, "No women??? At least there's an Italian" which is a fair thing to say and feel, but it almost implies that all Italians are women-adjacent

“One of the most amazing things that can happen is finding someone who sees everything you are and won’t let you be anything less. They see the potential in you. They see endless possibilities. And through their eyes, you start to see yourself the same way. As someone who matters. As someone who can make a difference in this world.”

A friend of mine went out of town, so I'm looking after their Houndoom until they get back. He is a joyful beast, but I have yet to meet another Pokémon with such sadness in their eyes.
