I love how Zohran Mamdani is wearing a suit everywhere. And if he has anything else he puts it ON TOP of the suit. A basketball jersey. A high-vis vest. All worn over the suit. He’s like the mayor character in a cartoon who’s always dressed as The Mayor. If I didn’t know who he was and he biked past me in NYC I’d be like holy shit was that the mayor
Not to bring the serious to a very fun post, but this reaction is exactly what Mamdani is working for with his image, because in a very real way the most effective way for him to be The Mayor is if he looks like The Mayor.
This is a man who is VIOLENTLY aware that when it comes to conservatives, he is a Muslim first, a Brown Man second, an Immigrant third, a Socialist fourth, and a human a very distant fifth, if considered at all. He was also a young adult during the Obama Years and will have seen Republicans rip Obama to shreds for wearing a tan suit instead of a dark one and use literally ANY excuse they could to try and degrade his image.
Despite the fact that a mayor who wears a T-shirt and jeans might "seem more approachable" in the eyes of the average American, Zohran Mamdani knows that someone with his profile fundamentally cannot get away with that the way his White colleagues can. He has instead put in the effort to look professional and BE approachable, because not only does it make it easier for him to reach and represent his constituents, it forces everyone, including both his opponents and establishment Democrats, to engage with the work he is doing instead of judging his image. The fact that he is always seen in a suit and is recognisably The Mayor is, while also something he has fun with, a deliberate choice to ensure he is as inarguably A Professional Politician To Be Taken Seriously. The added humour of e.g. the hi-vis is a bonus, only achievable because he works so hard to Look Like The Mayor.
Adding these tags from @haunted-stranger-garden bc they illustrate this brilliantly

YOU THINK WHOS BIGER THE CHEERY TOMATOW OR HIM
I already said it a hundred times at this point but i really need to find a way to enjoy cooking just enough that i will be more organized about it and thus probably have a decent budget for it
like, okay, i suck at planning meals, but if i suck at it it's probably because i don't enjoy the process of cooking. Even the prospect of eating my favorite meal or listening to a podcast while cooking arent enough. It's a lot of time "lost", a lot of constraints, for almost zero reward. "Choose a list of recipes then stick to it for the week" but there are thousands of them and i FREEZE. Then because i still will never skip a meal i'll end up eating something like rice + egg + fruit that i made in 10 minutes, but because it's not rewarding EITHER, i'll enjoy cooking even less...
ok ok the things to focus on are easy, low-prep meals with lots of nutritional value. i don't know your preferences and exactly what ingredients are available to you, so actual recipe recs feel like the wrong move.
but this is workable. sounds like 2 main issues are Choosing Foods and Cooking Process Sucks Too Much.
with that in mind i think you need a short rotation of foods that are high-reward and low-prep. If you will eat rice, a rice cooker helps a lot here, as does a slow cooker or instant pot, since they are set it and forget it tools, and are high enough capacity to make several meals worth at once. if you want recipe ideas i can give it a go with things that work for me but YMMV.
as for Cooking Process, some of the bits that i find are hardest are defeatable. trying to chop everything as other stuff was on the heat stresses me out, so I get all the ingredients out first, prep them all, and then start cooking. to save on dishes, I also review the recipe closely to see what things can go into the pot together, and I prep them together + they sit in the same bowl until its time to add them.
for the babysitting a pan or pot, which is boring, this is the time for slow cookers/instant pots/casserole dishes. no babysitting required.
another process thing is just. theres so much stuff about how food is better from scratch, and that isn't necessarily wrong, but food that you will prepare is better than food you won't prepare. so using pre-cut veg or meat, buying instant rice instead of the kind you have to actually cook, and buying premade sauces will lower the barrier to entry and it's literally more nutritious than not doing that and then not eating.
the only time/energy-saver i recommend NOT doing is microwaving veggies. a limp microwaved broccoli is awful. its unfortunately worth the time to roast or saute them instead.
also the smorgasbord/charcuterie/Lunchable model works wonders especially when its hot out. 2-3 cheeses, 1-2 meats, some bread or crackers, a little olive oil, a raw veg + hummus, and juice or fruit is my household's arrangement and all you have to do is put it all on the table and eat it like a really big snack. its basically a deconstructed sandwich.
adulthood notes:
The Rodeo Rule: you only have to do it for the first time once.
The Rohan Rule: if you are at a social function full of new people and you want to be liked, find someone doing important work like setup or food prep and offer to help.
The Tutorial Mode Rule: to navigate an unfamiliar situation where you fear you will mess up an interaction, preface the interaction by mentioning that you've never done this before, and let them know if you have a specific concern or question.
The Rocket Science Rule: most new things you want to try seem very complicated but are simple when taken step by step.
The [X] Will Remember That Rule: if you need to make small talk with the same person on a regular basis, try to save one fact or current event in their life from a given conversation and bring it up next time you talk.
The Cool Binder Rule: by wearing clothes and accessories that are to your taste instead of trying to blend in, people will be more likely to compliment you and show interest in you as a person.
