Learning to delete/mute/block before a negative comment takes root in your mind is a modern survival skill. If you're going to wander the overgrown countryside of the internet, you need to develop a quick eye for ticks.
It's deeply tempting to respond to the "well, actually," to the cruel assumption, to the unjust accusation, to the odious viewpoint. It's tempting because you're defaulting to the etiquette of dinner conversation. This isn't a dinner conversation. Someone is shouting at you from a moving car. Turn away.

Two Comedians Walk into a Hotel Room (Midge/Lenny)
I dusted off a half finished Marvelous Mrs. Maisel fic in anticipation of the new season starting up.Ā PG-13, fade to black,
Midge, Lenny, and a tiny Italian hotel room with only one bed.
II
Ā āYou can have the bed, Iāll take theā¦ā Ā Lenny looked at the room that was so small it didnāt even have a spot for a chair
Ā āBathtub?ā Midge suggested wryly as she looked for a place to put her suitcase. Ā āDonāt be silly, we can share. Ā One of us is a gentleman.ā
Ā āI hope you mean you because thatās something Iāve never been accused of a day in my life. Ā Also, there is no bathtub. Ā Iām not even sure that qualifies as a shower so much as itās a really tall sink.ā Ā Lenny stepped out of the bathroom, which was really more of an alcove with a curtain hung to separate it from the room.
Ā āThatās okay, I donāt think this is a hotel room so much as it is a closet they just so happened to fit a bed in.ā Ā It was smaller than her closet, actually. Ā She was going to have to put her suitcase on the bed to get anything out and squeeze it into the corner when she was done. Ā
Ā āI donāt think itās a closet if thereās a window.ā Ā 'Window' was being generous, considering the size and the fact that it almost touched the ceiling and they couldnāt look out of it without standing on the chair they didnāt have.
Ā āI donāt think itās a bedroom if thereās not a closet.ā Ā What they were being charged for a closet was ridiculous.
Ā āTwo comedians walk into a closet andā¦ā
Ā āHeard that one. Ā The punchline never works.ā Ā She tossed her suitcase on the bed, glad sheād left the bigger one in the car. Ā āYou can use the bathroom first.ā
Ā āNo complaints if I use up all the hot water.ā Ā He ducked into the bathroom, emerging a few minutes later in blue striped pajamas that looked far too normal to belong to him. Ā Sheād expected, well she didnāt know. Ā But not blue cotton.
Ā āWhich side do you prefer?ā Ā It wasnāt a question sheād had to ask for almost a decade.
Ā āLadyās choice,ā he said with a shrug.
Ā āSo now I have to be the lady and the gentleman?ā she teased. Ā āTake the farther side so I donāt have to crawl over you to get to bed.ā
Ā āI donāt know the best way to reply to that.ā Ā He sat at the edge of the bed and looked up at her with a strange earnestness that only existed between them in the quietest of moments. Ā She knew it would be easy to brush off as a joke. Ā It would be a lot more complicated to answer, and she was too exhausted for that. Ā Instead she took her pajamas and robe into the bathroom to change. Ā She stared in a cloudy mirror for a full minute before deciding to wash her face. Ā She would worry about her makeup and hair in the morning; hopefully sheād be awake before Lenny.
Ā āDonāt get lost on the way to bed,ā Lenny half-whispered after she turned off the light.
Ā āI think I can manage.ā Ā It took three steps before her shins hit the bed. Ā She felt for the blanket, careful not to reach too far; they didnāt need any awkward situations. Ā She was sharing a bed with Lenny. Ā It would be a lie if she said sheād never thought of that before. Ā It would be a lie if she thought this was how it would happen too. Ā Just her luck that hotel rooms were in such high demand that they had to take what they could get. Ā As it was they'd had to lie about being married to get the room they had. Ā āWhat a day. Ā Tomorrow has to be better, right?ā
Ā āNot now that youāve jinxed it.ā Ā As her eyes adjusted to the light she could see that Lenny was lying on his side, facing away from her. Ā She mimicked the pose, facing the door.
Ā āThink the food is as good as the service here?ā Ā It occurred to her just how long ago dinner had been. Ā
Ā āI think room service is that vending machine in the lobby.ā
Ā āGreat.ā Ā For a moment as she settled her foot touched the back of his leg. Ā She pulled away. Ā āYou donāt snore, do you?ā
Ā āI donāt know, itās been a while since Iāve stayed up late enough to try and catch myself sleeping.ā Ā The mattress moved a little as he shifted. Ā āNight Midge.ā
Ā āNight Lenny.ā
Ā II
Ā She woke up to singing. Ā It took a minute to register what the noise was, and for it to sink in that Lenny was awake. Ā He was awake and out of bed, and it was light enough out that any chance sheād had of sneaking out to do her hair and makeup before he got up was gone. Ā Her face was bare, her hair flat, and she was wearing a nightgown chosen more for warmth than looks.
Ā Midge did the only reasonable thing she could think of; she pulled the blankets over her head.
Ā āHate to break it to you but the sun actually is up. Ā Itās not even hiding behind a cloud.ā
Ā āAre you always this cheerful in the morning? Ā Not going to lie, morning person was about the last thing I would have assumed about you. Ā Vampire is way higher on my list of possibilities.ā Ā She couldnāt just pretend to go to sleep, that was way too sensible.
Ā āCanāt stand the taste of blood, unless itās a Bloody Mary.ā Ā She could almost feel him shrugging. Ā āI slept good last night. Ā Weirdly good. Ā Must be the company.ā
Ā āIt certainly isnāt the bed.ā Ā There was a spring that she was certain was deliberately poking her in the middle of her back. Ā
Ā āIāve slept on worse.ā Ā The end of the bed dipped down when he climbed over.
Ā āIām sure you have.ā Ā Sheād been in worse beds too, though she couldnāt think of any. Ā
Ā āYou really arenāt coming out of there, are you?ā
Ā āIāll come out when you find the continental breakfast.ā Ā Maybe if she was lucky heād doze off and she could get out of bed and do her face and hair. Ā Or maybe heād start poking her in the arm. Ā āHey.ā
Ā āI think there were some Swedish fish in the vending machine. Ā Thatās as close to continental as youāre going to get from this place.ā He poked her again.
Ā āWhy did you do that?ā
Ā āCurious.ā Ā Another poke.
Ā āIt killed the cat, you know.ā
Ā āNot the worst thing to die from. Ā Iāll take curiosity over complacency any day.ā
Ā āWhat are you curious about?ā Ā It was stuffy under the sheet and she was feeling vaguely ridiculous. Ā Reluctantly she lowered the sheet to just below her chin.
Ā āHow to get you to do that.ā Ā He grinned at her. Ā āGood morning.ā
Ā āAlright, where are you hiding the coffee? Ā You canāt be this awake this early without caffeine.ā
Ā āLike I said, it must be the company.ā Ā He turned to his side, propping his head up on one arm. Ā āDid you know this is the first time Iāve woken up in bed with anyone since my divorce?ā
Ā āAre you asking me to believe that Lenny Bruce hasnāt had sex in over two years?ā
Ā āI didnāt say that. Ā I said I hadnāt woken up with anyone.ā
Ā āLove āem and leave āem?ā she teased. Ā Sheād seen enough women waiting for him after shows, even when he ignored them. Ā
Ā āIām not usually the one leaving.ā Ā For just a moment the smile on his face slipped, but it was back again so quickly that she might have thought she imagined the look in his eyes. Ā She knew him just well enough, though, to know that there was a hell of a lot happening under the surface that he didnāt let most people see.
Ā āIām not going anywhere. Ā After all you are the one with the car keys.ā Ā She gave him an easy out, if he wanted to dismiss everything with a joke. Ā He didnāt take it.
Ā āIād almost forgotten how nice it was to wake up to someone else. Ā Youāre a hell of a looker, Midge. Ā Had to pinch myself to make sure I wasnāt still dreaming.ā
Ā āI think it was more likely to be a nightmare. Ā I havenāt even combed my hair.ā Ā Self consciously she touched the side of her head, certain that without curlers it was a matted mess.
Ā āYouāre kidding me, right? Ā You know most women would kill to look half as good as you do right now.ā
Ā āLennyā¦ā Ā He usually played straight with her, sometimes even a little too honest when she was feeling vulnerable.
Ā āMidge.ā Ā He pushed her hand away, his hand warm where it touched the side of her neck. Ā āIād offer to knock some sense into you, but if I stay in this bed any longer it wonāt be for talking. Ā As it is Iām hoping the water in the shower is cold, if that rusty pipe in the bathroom even is a shower.ā
Ā āA shower is probably a good idea.ā Ā Theyād been dancing around each other for months. Ā Years, maybe, but certainly since her second divorce and Florida. Ā There had been a lot of almost moments, but none so close as sleeping in the same bed. Ā If one of them didnāt move soon something was going to happen. Ā Something would be a terrible idea.
Ā Wouldnāt it?
Ā āYeah, it probably is.ā Ā His hand hadnāt moved.
Ā āWe probably have to check out soon.ā Ā She couldnāt even remember what the check-in desk had looked like, just a vague impression of an Italian voice.
Ā āNot until noon.ā Ā The clock beside the bed said it was a little after eight.
Ā āWe have a show to do.ā It was three weeks into a European tour, the first break sheād had since the disaster with Shy. Ā There was a show every night, almost always in a new town.
Ā āIn thirteen hours.ā
Ā āLennyā¦ā
Ā āSay the word, Midge, and Iāll go take that shower right now. Ā If Iām lucky itās spitting ice cubes. Ā We can go find ourselves a place that makes pasta and spend a few hours playing tourist. Ā Weāll stop someplace to get a postcard you can send to the kids. Ā After tonightās show weāll head for the next place and they will probably have separate rooms.ā
Ā āI think Iād like to know whatās behind door number two.ā Ā It wasnāt just because they were both in the same bed. Ā It wasnāt the way he was looking at her, though it certainly helped her confidence. Ā Sheād known for a long time that she and Lenny would end up at this point eventually, it was just a question of when. Ā Now seemed like as good a time as any. Ā Or maybe she was just tired of waiting for what she knew she wanted.
Ā āAre you sure? Ā I donāt know what this is, I never have known what it is, but what itās not is a one-night stand.ā
Ā āOf course, itās not. Ā How can it be a one-night stand when itās morning?ā Ā She smiled at him and hoped he knew her well enough to know that it wasnāt just a joke. Ā She knew that taking this next step would change things. Ā How she didnāt have a clue, but they would figure that out. Ā Later. Ā
Ā āI guess I canāt ask if youāll still respect me in the morning?ā
Ā āWho says I respect you now?ā Ā She did of course. Ā She respected him as a comic, and more importantly as a man who fought passionately for what he believed in. Ā She wondered how much he needed to hear right now. Ā How much she dared to open up. Ā āI donāt know what this is either, but I think we both know itās something.
Ā āHereās to somethings.ā Ā He kissed her, the first time their lips had touched. Ā Which was strange, considering that it was already one of the most intimate relationships sheād ever had. Ā Lenny understood her in a way no one else ever could.
Ā āHey, you cheated. Ā You brushed your teeth, and thatās not fair. Ā Iām the only one with morning breath.ā Ā
Ā āIāll suffer,ā he muttered before running his tongue along her lip, teasing her into opening her mouth. Ā Not that it was hard work to get her to open for him.
Ā It surprised her that he spent long minutes touching nothing more than her mouth and the side of her neck where his hand still rested. Ā It was the slow and lazy kind of kissing she vaguely remembered from her pre-kid days when she and Joel had spent entire weekend mornings in bed, not dressing until time for lunch.
Ā She didnāt want to think about Joel. Ā She didnāt want to think. Ā āThatās nice.ā
Ā āIād like to think thereās potential for it to get nicer.ā
Ā āIād like to think thereās potential for a lot less clothing.ā
Ā āThat could probably be arranged, though thereās something to be said for retaining a little mystery.ā
Ā āYouāre wearing blue cotton pajamas, Lenny. Ā It could only get more mysterious if you took them off, not less. Ā Whatās wrong, you hiding something under there? Ā You show me yours and Iāll show you mine.ā Ā
Ā āNow that is definitely a trade worth considering. Ā Iām still sorry I missed your first show, you know. Ā Iāve heard storiesā¦ā Ā He grinned at her, his hand not so subtly settling on one of her breasts.
Ā āSo have I. Ā My favorite is the one where I was considered for a Playboy centerfold. Ā You wonāt believe where they wanted to place the microphone.ā Ā She hoped it was only a rumor. Ā If it was true then she was offended that no one actually approached her. Ā She wouldnāt have done it, probably, but just imagining her motherās face made it worth considering.
Ā āI have a few ideas.ā Ā Through the thin layer of cotton she could feel the warmth of his hand. Ā The fact that he refused to move was driving her nuts.
Ā āThere are buttons, you know. Ā If you undo them you could be touching the real thing.ā Ā Now that they had made a decision she practically itched to feel his hands. Ā Sheād certainly spent enough time looking at them and wondering if they would move as much across her skin as they did when he stood on stage. Ā He had very expressive hands.
Ā āThis is just the warm-up act, I promise.ā Ā She was distracted enough by his mouth that she didnāt even notice him undoing the first button. Ā By the time heād freed the second one sheād figured out what he was doing.
Ā āWarm-up act?ā Ā She asked when the kiss ended. Ā Heād gotten the buttons undone almost to her waist.
Ā āItās eight-fifteen and we have to check out at noon. Ā Itās not going to take that long to pack since we didnāt actually unpack last night. Ā I figure that means we have a good three and a half hours before we have to get out of bed. Ā Plenty of time to take things slow.ā
Ā āWeāve been taking things slow since Florida.ā
Ā āItās been a lot longer than Florida.ā
Ā āI know.ā Ā She did now, but before Florida things had been confused, with Benjamin and Joel and in a completely different way Shy. Sheād known that Lenny mattered, but hadnāt really understood until that night how much she mattered to him. Ā āIt was hard to leave that night, though.ā
Ā āIt was hard to watch you go.ā Ā He pushed aside the worn cotton to reveal one breast, his fingers finally caressing her skin. Ā He looked at her face, though. Ā āItās always hard to watch you leave.ā
Ā āIām not going anywhere.ā Ā She was glad he was still in Florida when the news that she wasnāt on Shyās tour had hit. Ā It had been a month until heād come back to the city, and sheād licked the worst of her wounds by then, and suffered the worst of her parentsā well-meaning advice. Ā Sheād been able to get on the stage when he pushed her, and talk to him afterward. Ā It had taken almost a year, but she was finally in Europe, and this time she and Lenny were on the same tour. Ā They had a whole summer together. Ā And after? Ā They would have to figure that out later. Ā Midge covered his hand with her own, pressing both against her breast. Ā āBut I am going to need more than fifteen minutes to get ready so letās get moving.ā
Ā āYouāre such a romantic.ā Ā He tugged his hand away only to replace it with his mouth, his lips against her breast making her shiver. Ā āYou know if youāre cold we donāt have to take off anything.ā
Ā āIt could be snowing in this room right now and I wouldnāt be cold.ā Ā On top of three weeks of seeing Lenny every day and spending at least half of her nights wondering what it would have been like if she had gone inside his hotel room, the last time sheād slept with anyone had been Joel in Vegas. Ā She wasnāt thinking about Joel, even if it did explain why her skin was sensitive to every touch.
Ā āGood to know.ā Ā There were only a few buttons left on her nightgown and he undid them all. Ā Midge was thankful that even if her pajamas were cotton and there wasnāt a hint of lace at least she was wearing nice panties. Ā If theyād been cotton as well she might have rethought the whole thing no matter how much she wanted to say yes. Ā āAnd speaking of things that are goodā¦ā
Ā āItās nothing you havenāt seen before.ā Ā She tried to sound casual. Ā Tried not to think about the fact that he was only the third person sheād slept with and sheād been married and divorced from her husband before heād been her first thing in the morning without makeup. She didnāt even want to think about what her hair looked like. Ā Normally she would have spent hours at the salon and in the bath preparing for this and yet here she was in an Italian hotel room with no plan at all except knowing that she wanted Lenny to touch her.
Ā āI havenāt seen you before, Midge.ā Ā His hand lightly skimmed over her chest, down lower until he worked small circles around her belly button. Ā āBut I sure have thought about it.ā
Ā āWhat exactly have you thought about?ā Ā Not content to remain completely passive she reached out for the buttons of his pajama top. Ā She hadnāt seen him without a shirt yet. Ā āWe can compare notes.ā
Ā āIf I tell you every thought Iāve had about you and sex weāll have to check out of this room before we get to act out any of them.ā
Ā āThat many?ā
Ā āOh yeah. Ā The first and most often considered involves you and a certain doorway in Florida. Ā Sometimes we donāt even make it inside, we just stay there against the door. Ā Iāve seen you in hotel beds and backstage dressing rooms. Ā On the way out here I had to use the restroom on the plane and I wondered what it would be like to join the mile high club with you.ā Ā He distracted her from her goal of getting rid of his shirt with a fingertip along the top edge of her underwear. Ā It wasnāt a light enough touch to tickle, but it was only a single finger. Ā āI have a very rich fantasy life.ā
Ā āI approve.ā Ā When she managed to free the last of the buttons he shrugged out of the shirt, tossing it to the ground. Ā He didnāt spend much time in the sun, which didnāt surprise her. Ā He wasnāt exactly a beach kind of guy and his skin was uniformly pale except for his forearm just below the elbow where he had a tattoo. Ā She rolled over on her side so she could get a better look. āSo that isnāt just a bit for the Steve Allen Show?ā
Ā āItās real enough. Ā Got it the first time I came to Europe. Ā Believe it or not the accommodations at that time were worse than this.ā Ā
Ā āYou were a soldier.ā Ā She couldnāt picture it. Ā If there was anyone less likely to hold a gun she didnāt know who they were. Ā She could more easily picture her mother shooting someone. Ā She wondered how much of his rebellion had started with the Navy and the war. Ā Her own experience with the war was in collecting money for war bonds and lamenting the lack of stockings once sheād started wearing heels. Ā She was sixteen when it ended, and the whole thing had seemed so far away. Ā Not for Lenny.
Ā āThe Navy thought so.ā Ā He rubbed a hand over the tattoo as if it might change somehow. Ā Midge leaned over and kissed it before working her way up his arm in small kisses. Ā They didnāt need to talk about things like war today. Ā Maybe some other time they would lay in bed and she would trace his tattoo with her finger and ask him about the where and the why of it. Ā āAt least they did until we had a slight misunderstanding about a comedy show and a female impersonation. Ā I thought I was funny. Ā They thought I was light in the loafers.ā
Ā āI didnāt know navy men wore loafers.ā Ā A few years ago she wouldnāt have understood what he meant, but life in the theatre was very different then the world sheād been raised in. Ā She didnāt know what would make anyone question Lennyās preferences, but she certainly didnāt have to ask that question. Ā The thin cotton pants did nothing to hide his interest. Ā āItās a good thing youāre not wearing anything at all. Ā It will make it easier to remove your pants.ā
Ā āIād rather remove your pants, Miriam.ā
Ā āIām not wearing any pants.ā Ā With the nightgown crumpled on the bed the only thing she had left was her underwear.
Ā āLooks like Iām winning, then.ā Ā He used a hand on each hip to pull her closer until she all but sat in his lap. Ā God he tasted good. Ā And clearly his tongue worked for more than just talking, no matter how good he was at talking. Ā His hands on her hips kept her from moving too much, but when she wiggled a little against his leg it offered a tantalizing amount of friction. Ā She moaned into his mouth. Ā āOh yeah, definitely winning.ā
Ā āYouāre not the only one.ā Ā She kissed the side of his jaw, his neck, and the bit of his clavicle that was sticking out a little more than it should. Ā Seeing his chest for the first time meant she could see the signs of too many missed meals. Ā They were definitely finding some pasta for lunch. Ā And when they got home at the end of the tour she was making him pot roast.
Ā The thought made her dizzy. Ā Not the idea of cooking for him, but how normal it sounded when she thought about it. Ā She wanted to cook for him. Ā Wanted to fall asleep in a bed with him when they didnāt have to be careful about not touching. Ā She wanted the someday heād mentioned once to last a lot longer than the last relationship sheād had or the one before that. Ā
Ā āHey, whereād you go?ā Ā Lenny tilted her head back with a finger under her chin. Ā āI hope Iām not boring you here.ā
Ā āI was thinking about Florida. Ā You said maybe someday.ā Ā She didnāt take her eyes off of him as she reached down to undo the drawstring on his pajama bottoms.
Ā āBefore Iām dead,ā he said, though the last word was almost lost when she touched him for the first time.
Ā āYouāre not dead,ā she said with a laugh, the feel of him soft and warm against her hand. Ā It was easier to tease than to think about the wistfulness of the words the first time sheād heard them.
Ā āIām alive, or at least parts of me are. Ā Very alive.ā Ā His hand shifted, fingers brushing against the side of her neck. Ā The imprints of his fingertips against her pulse.
Ā āI suppose that makes this someday.ā Ā She wouldnāt worry about tomorrow or the end of the tour, not this morning. Ā Not when she had the taste of him in her mouth and every nerve was screaming for more. Ā She would allow herself to be in the moment and nothing more.
Ā āNot the worst idea Iāve heard.ā Ā He tried to pull her into a kiss again, his body firm against her, but she pulled away long enough to offer a mostly joking glare.
Ā āNot the worst? Ā Iād hope for a little more enthusiasm.ā
Ā āIām not very good at planning for somedays but I like where I am right now. Ā I like it a lot.ā Ā For a moment the jokes slid away and she saw something in his eyes that made her kiss the corner of his mouth gently. Ā They werenāt ready for that conversation yet.
Ā āI like where I am right now too.ā Ā She liked it a lot, and for now that was enough.

āNational Geographic called me and asked me to write the feminist facts about how The Lion King gets lion pride dynamics all wrong. I happily complied. Lions are matrilineal!!Ā
When I contacted Craig Packer, one of the worldās leading lion researchers, to talk Ā about this story he was IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE. He Skyped me almost instantly from a camp in Kenya and said heās been waiting for someone to ask him this question since the original film came out.
Anyway, if The Lion King were real, Nala would be the star, Sarabi would be holding her up saying everything the light touches is our kingdom, Simba would have left and never come back, and when Nala got old enough Sarabi would have carved out a territory for her to rule.ā
-Ā Erin BibaāĀ
In real life, Simbaās mom would be running the pride
āReasons men gave for lecturing me on lion pride social structure and telling me one of the worldās leading lion researchers is wrong (I am not kidding these are real): -Watched The Lion King DVD extras -Read a textbook 25 years ago -Has been to the zoo -Everyone just knows
If you ever wondered what itās like to be a woman that communicates science, this is what itās like. Any expertise you or your sources may have gained over decades of hard work are null and void because someone watched a DVD extra 25 years ago.ā
āshe was called Phillis, because that was the name of the ship that brought her, and Wheatley, which was the name of the merchant who bought her. She was born in Senegal. In Boston, the slave traders put her up for sale:
-sheās seven years old! She will be a good mare!
She was felt, naked, by many hands.
At thirteen, she was already writing poems in a language that was not her own. No one believed that she was the author. At the age of twenty, Phillis was questioned by a court of eighteen enlightened men in robes and wigs.
She had to recite texts from Virgil and Milton and some messages from the Bible, and she also had to swear that the poems she had written were not plagiarized. From a chair, she gave her long examination, until the court accepted her: she was a woman, she was black, she was a slave, but she was a poet. ā
Phillis Wheatley, was the first African-American writer to publish a book in the United States.

have you yet had the cognitive dissonance that comes with learning that Jon Pertwee was an actual spy in WWII or have you not yet had that pleasure
i HAVE and it's so funny - imagine being a real life British spy and, posthumously, your most recognized achievement is playing a gay science magician on children's television
John Pertwee belongs to a very exclusive club for people who were spies in WWII, later became famous for completely unrelated things, and were over 6 feet tall.
The other club members are Christopher Lee, Julia Child, and Roald Dahl.
