Breville Oracle Review
A switch back to Windows
Lately I have been using a Windows PC again. A switch back to Microsoft after a year using a MacBook Pro. It’s been ... interesting.
A Parrot on your visor
One thing we all know is that you should never drive a vehicle and talk on the phone (holding the phone) while you drive. One way to be on the phone while you drive is with a hands-free device and I'm here to tell you about just one of them.

The connected peddle
The smart baby bottle
The Sony Symphonic Light
The Parrot Pot
and more... Let me know what you think!
Parrot Adding More Power to your flower
Today at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Parrot - the makers of SO many cool products have announced a pot.
My quick chat with 3AW Melbourne
Today I was invited on radio 3AW Drive with Dr Sally Cockburn in Melbourne to talk about GPS technology and with all the advances in tracking our phones, pets and people... how are we losing planes!? We also talk about selfie-sticks but not quite as important.

The "slashie" band
I've been using a Striiv Fusion for a couple of weeks now and here are a few words about this slashie band.
I'm calling this band a slashie band because it is a fitness band SLASH smart watch. It's a genuinely interesting product.
The Striiv Fusion resembles the Fitbit Flex however has a much larger screen. The screen displays a bunch of content all through swipes and taps, no buttons.
A couple of taps wakes up the band and shows the date and time, swipe across and you can view; steps, distance walked, calories burned and how much you've slept. Go into the apps section and activate your sleep timer, view notifications from your smartphone and more.
The Striiv maintains a bluetooth connection to your smartphone so whenever a notication appears on your smartphone it will also show on the Striiv, really handy to subtly check messages and see who is calling without reaching for your phone.
The best bit about all of this is that it just works. This isnt a complicated fitness band, doesnt have more features than you really need and does what it does well. One thing about this band which frustrates you though is that without any buttons you rely on the sensitivity of the screen to turn it on and swipe. The double-tap feature works... 50% of the time.
The device is water resistant so I only removed it to charge, I wore it in the shower without hesitation. The charging part is a little annoying, it has a special adapter which connects to it and a microUSB port to charge, so just make sure you dont lose that piece!
The battery life on the Striiv Fusion was pretty decent, averaging around 5-6 days before turning off. It charges to 100% in only a couple of hours too so you dont have to walk without it very much.
All of the data can be analysed and viewed on the app from your smartphone and the app itself is actually fairly decent, close to the like of the Jawbone Up app - which is fantastic. One of the fun parts of the app is that firmware updates are delivered through here and it is crazy to see how much this band evolved in just two weeks. Striiv emailed me to let me know about new features coming and sure enough there it was after an update, including a vibrating alarm, handy for when you dont want to wake your partner in the morning. There are more updates scheduled including music control too.
The package for the Striiv Fusion doesn't come in just one colour either, it ships in blue, black and red... in the one box. The piece in the middle can be removed and installed in either band depending on your outfit for the day.
Overall, this band is a really smart little package. It isn't the best smartwatch nor is it the best fitness band BUT it is a fantastic combination of the two. If you were considering your first fitness band slash smartwatch then you need to check out the inexpensive Striiv Fusion. It's pretty damn neat.
Four Tips You Must Read Before Your Next Music Festival
I've been to a few music festivals and continue to learn about ways to enhance the experience and be prepared. Here are a few tips.
Protect your phone!
Your phone is your lifeline at a festival, lose your friends and that thing becomes the only connection to them you have left. Plus, you need it to take quick snaps, use social media etc. Protect it from the elements! There is a good chance you will get wet at a festival (rain, hoses, spilled drink etc).
If you own a Galaxy S5 or one of the new Sony phones then you've likely got a water resistent phone already. If not:
50c protection: A GLAD bag, these things will zip lock and protect the phone
$50 protection: waterproof phone cases are available for most makes and models, get one.
Capture the moment!
The camera on your phone is good but to really capture the moments I recently used a GoPro Hero and have also used a Toshiba Camileo Sports camera. Both will film ultra wide angle video as well as come in waterproof casing and will withstand a drop, a punch, a roll on the floor, whatever. I paired the GoPro will my phone and was able to transfer content wirelessly as well as use it as a viewfinder. I also recommend a pole for these action cameras. It allows you to capture the view above heads and get some much better footage. My video below will demonstrate.
Last longer!
These music festivals are long days/nights. You need your phone to last. I have three suggestions to do that:
Free: Change the settings on your phone to extend battery life. Turn off as many push services as you can. Turn off bluetooth and wifi. Turn off GPS. Turn the brightness down. Heck, even turn off data. Calls are the most important at a festival.
$40: Buy a good ol Nokia handheld, the old school Nokia's are still for sale and they're cheap and functional. Perfect for being contactable for the whole day easily.
$70: Buy a battery charger for your smartphone. They'll easily give you a whole extra charge and are small enough to carry in your pocket. Some are built into phone cases and can be quite seemless.
App up!
Our smartphones are brilliant, a few favourite apps for festivals:
The festival app: every music festival releases their app prior to the event. It allows you to schedule your favourite acts and get reminders. Much better than a folded flyer.
Instagram: Not just for the filters. I love Instagram because I can share an image or video once and have it go to Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr and more in one click. Data is scarce and slow at a festival so uploading to the internet once is great!
Glympse: This app is very handy for meeting with your friends. That call "I wonder where Geoff is, I'll call him and see how he is travelling". Forget that. You open the app and share your location for a period of time with your friends, they can then open the app on their phone and pinpoint you whenever they like, easy.
Besides all of this, have a great time, stay safe and look after your friends.

My view on the latest Windows Phone
I've been looking through the latest Windows Phone from Nokia and if this is their last hurrah then it might not be a bad thing.
The Lumia 830, the one I tested was white... so lets take a look.
LIKE
The dimensions. This phone is not overly thick like the more expensive Lumia 930 and it doesn't have a screen so big that I cant use it with one hand.
The performance. This is pronounced as a mid-range phone, mid-range price and if you're a specs monkey then you'd say it has mediocre specs too. BUT. This phone runs apps and games just fine. Windows Phone is one of those operating systems that doesn't chew on resources like tobacco and doesnt freak out when you demand to play FIFA 15, it just gets on with the job.
The camera. Again, a somewhat lower spec camera by todays standards but the 10MP shooter at the back took great shots and left me impressed.
Cortana. This is the name of the fantastic little voice assistant on Windows Phone. It's a smart smart "woman". Someone who will answer your questions, schedule appointments and more. Similar to Siri but I would prefer Cortana working in my office than Siri. Siri seems to have a weird mood.
DISLIKE
Look at what I liked. Now tell me where I talked about all the things I did on the device. Very hardware dependant. Good camera, performs well and is comfortable to use. What's missing? Well, whatever shows up on the screen. I'm not saying I don't like anything about what happens on the screen but I do get frustrated with the layout of Windows Phone. A bunch of customisable tiles is nice but if you dont have an app on that main screen then you'll have a lot of fun scrolling to find it. Looking for all the apps you had on Android and iOS? You might not find them. The app store is continually improving but it is still miles away from being an exciting store you actually want to live in. For Australians this analogy will make sense; Windows Phone is IGA and iOS and Android are Woolworths and Coles. Sure you can buy your groceries from both. But you can be sure as shit you ain't finding the variety and quality in the meat section. The meat section at my local IGA is disturbingly bad. I couldn't even find bacon one morning. Bacon.
Anyway.
MARRY OR AVOID?
Here is how I see the world; It's confusing. No personality is the same and not everyone likes the same colour, brand, shape, style, gender, shirt, grocery store etc. I know a large amount of people who like Windows Phone. They laugh at me for using an iPhone. They get excited by tiles that flip and dance on your home screen. I am an app whore. I have one night stands with apps all the time. Right now my iPhone has 119 apps, and I delete them as quick as I get them, I'm weird like that. I also love wearables and device connected accessories. All of which wont work on a Windows Phone. So, while the hardware is good, the OS is somwhat frustrating to use and heck, it is available in bright green, it just isn't for me. BUT. If you are a Windows Phone lover, and there are plenty. Then I would prefer this phone over a Lumia 930 or 1020. It is the most practical Windows Phone I've ever used, and it functions as good as a 930 in most respects that it would be insane of me to spend the extra cash on one.
Nokia or Microsoft, take out an ad for a billboard. Put a picture of the Lumia 830 on there, in white - the green and orange are wrong, and in the slogan keep it simple and say "Smartphone, simplified" - because this is the phone for people who want a smartphone to look like they're keeping up in the world, don't hunger for the biggest and greatest and don't need a million apps. This is a simple and practical smartphone and for a lot of people that is all they need. IGA isn't where I like to shop, but a lot of people do, they're usually a convenience store. Get it?
A date with Panasonic
Tonight I signed up for a public event with Panasonic to learn more about their Lumix camera range and give them a bit of a whirl.

Apple CarPlay - Hands-on!
Today EFTM allowed me to jump in their Mazda 2 for some hands on time with the latest car stereo head-unit from Pioneer equipped with Apple CarPlay.
Bose AND Affordable? Yep.
For a long time Bose has been a brand that spells premium and high end - generally at a high price. Prepare to be surprised.
