WRANGLING STARS CHAPTER 3: âTake a Deep Breathâ
The tension was palpable. Nothing but the sound of silverware scraping against porcelain plates could be heard throughout the Pride house. Buzz chose to sit between the two people he felt the most comfortable with at the time; that being Jessie and Bo. From this anxiety driven action, to his dismay, he was sitting across from Woody. He seemed calmer than he was on the front porch, but he could still feel eyes staring absolute daggers his direction. He kept his head down, afraid heâd be turned to dust if he dared to look up. Bo was watching the both of them, exchanging a look with Jessie across the table. She sighs, standing up with a slightly annoyed shake of her head and grabs Woody by the shoulder. âCan I see you in the other room for a moment, dear?â Boâs words were laced with serious intent, a tone Woody had grown familiar with overtime. He was in trouble. He says nothing as he gets up and follows her out of the dining room and into his bedroom; where she shuts the door with blunt force.
Once she heard the click of the door, Jessie relaxes her shoulders. âI know I said it before, but Iâm sorry, Buzz. Woodyâs just..â Her eyes dart around as she tries to find some justification for his behavior that she hadnât used already that day, but she sadly drew a blank. She shakes her head. âI donât even know. I donât know what his deal is.â Buzz watches her face closely, not realizing her hand slowly snaking its way over the tabletop. She wraps her fingers gently overtop his closed palm. âYouâre doing great.â This last bit made him smile. âThanks, Jessie.â They exchange a grin, and quietly go back to eating their lunch with some of the tension now lifted.
âWhat is up with you?!â Bo loudly whispers, trying to keep the others from hearing their conversation through embarrassingly thin walls. âCâmon, Bo, you know how I feel about people like him!â Woody claps back, folding his arms and turning away from her. âWhat people? What did he do exactly?â âThose hotshot space-heads! Never workinâ a day in their damn life, taking resources and jobs away from those who need them! They drive me crazy! Using all this new fancy-shmancy technology, takinâ shortcuts instead of putting any actual effort in! Gettinâ everything handed to them, gettinâ all this recognition and fame from what?! Pushing buttons and sittinâ on their asses?! Tch!â Bo listens to his ramblings with knitted eyebrows, crossing her arms over her chest. âWoody, thatâs your father talking.â His shoulders slump a bit when she says that. He exhales, taking his hat off his head and running a hand through his neatly combed back hair. He sits on the edge of his bed and keeps his eyes to the rug at his feet. He feels a dip in the sheets as Bo sits by his side.
âDo I really sound like him again?â Woodyâs voice breaks, and Bo nods her head. âYou do. You havenât even given this guy a chance yet. I got the chance to talk to Mr.Lightyear already.. heâs a sweet guy.â Woody slightly rolls his eyes. âYeah, too sweet. Did you see the way he looked at Jessie? She canât go through this again, I canât go through this again! You remember how she was last time..â Woody puts a hand over his face, rubbing his temple. âYes, I remember. But you canât base everything off that one experience. Sheâs a strong woman, youâve gotta let her do things herself. Sheâs not a child anymore, sweetie.â Bo gently runs her hand up and down Woodyâs shoulder as unfortunate memories come to the forefront of his mind. âI know, I just.. I canât see her hurt again.â Woody feels a soft hand reach up to grab his chin. Bo slowly lifts his head to meet her eyes without much protest, and Woody immediately leans into her touch as she caresses his cheek with her palm. âNow, you sound like your mother.â This makes Woody chuckle, his shoulders vibrating.
The two look at each other for a long moment. âListen Woody, Iâm not dealinâ with you acting this way today, alright? We can talk about your little issues with Buzz later. But, for now, I want you to go back in there, finish eating with the rest of us, and help him get accustomed. You got that, mister?â She narrows her eyes at him. ââŠYes, Bo. But, Iâm not gonna be sickly sweet about it.â She shrugs. âIâll take what I can get.â They share a long, gentle kiss while Woody fully calms down. He holds Bo close in his arms, resting his head in her blonde hair. She always smelled so nice to him no matter the condition, like a big blanket of floral relaxation whenever she was near. After a moment, they part from each other and Bo places Woodyâs hat back on his head, adjusting it. âCome on, foodâs getting cold.â
âIâll be out in a minute.â Bo turns back and nods at Woody before leaving the room. Once heâs alone, Woody exhales and leans back against his sheets. His eyes wander between different objects in his bedroom. The family photos on top of his dresser, the laundry on his desk he still needs to fold, and finally, his nightstand. He uses his arms for leverage as he scoots closer to it, glancing back at the door again before opening the top drawer. Hidden underneath a microfiber cleaning cloth is a small square box. He picks it up, running his fingers over the velvet covered lid. His eyes are heavy, and focused. Like hell sheâd say yes after his attitude lately. He had enough sense to know it wasnât the right time. He puts the box back in his dresser, covering it back up before getting up himself and leaving to rejoin the rest.
Everyone else is already engaged in conversation when Woody comes and sits back down. âYeah, I couldnât move for a week after that. My trainer was a monster.â The three of them share a laugh as Buzz tells his story of an unfortunate experience from when he was just starting his life. âWell, sure, but look at ya now!â Bo responds, twirling her fork in her hand and pointing it at Buzz. He bashfully smiles. Next to him, Jessie is sitting with her head rested in her hand, just watching Buzz.
Woody inhales, and puts his hand down on the table, cutting their conversation short. âAlright, Buzz. Listen up.â He instantly straightens as heâs addressed. âWe get up when the sun does, and we donât stop work until itâs back down. Youâll be around the animals with Jessie most of the time, and I expect everything to be done just so. If you canât handle the workload, then youâd best be on your merry way, spaceman. Back to.. wherever the hell youâre from.â
Buzz nods his head, speaking up without fear. âYes sir, I promise you wonât be disappointed.â Woody just eyes him and looks back down at his plate. âWeâll see.â Buzz sighs and falls back in his chair. âCalifornia, sir.â âWhat?â Woody looks back up. âIâm from.. California.â âI didnât ask.â Jessie facepalms across the table.
The rest of lunch is quiet before Woody finally breaks the silence by standing up. âIâm heading back out. Slink will kill me if Iâm late again.â Bo stands up as Woody does and gets to work clearing the table. âAlright, but make sure youâre back on time tonight.â âOh, yes maâam.â Woody smirks at her as she pokes him in the side. They smirk at one another before Woody leaves the house.
The moment he walks out, Bo slumps against the wall. âWell that couldâve gone way better.â Jessie and Buzz relax too. âDonât let him get you down. Woodyâs an ass.â Bo bluntly states. âWe know youâll do good here.â Buzz rises and helps Bo clean things up. Jessie joins them, a smile quickly returning to her face like nothing happened. âWelp! We got a big afternoon ahead of us! Youâre gonna help me with the horses out in the stable, think you can handle it?â Jessie smiles at Buzz, who quickly nods his head. Bo excuses them both leave, cleaning up the rest herself. âCalifornia, huh? Thatâs pretty far away.â Their conversation carries on as they walk out of the house and head for the stables.
Bo looks at them out the kitchen window, before her eyes glance at the refrigerator. Thereâs a particular photo of her and Woody together sheâs focused on. Their senior prom photo, 1976. Theyâre both smiling wide, holding each other close in their arms with lights strung up behind them on the gazebo theyâre standing in. âI still wanna marry that man.â She smiles and returns to her cleaning.

I know it wonât happen, but Iâd love it if the new Frozen short film coming later this year focused on Hans after being sent home at the end of F1, then a short montage of how horrible he was treated through FF and F2, then sometime post-F2, he either escapes or is shipped off into exiled, the ship heâs on Capsizes, and he washes up unconscious on the shore of either Ahtohallan or Northulda, then at the end Elsa discovers his unconscious body. And then that leads into F3.

WRANGLING STARS CHAPTER 2: âInstant Regretâ
âOkay, letâs see here..â The jingling of keys echoes on the front porch of the guest cabin as Jessie fumbles in her pocket for the right set, her tongue poking out in some attempt at concentration. Buzz takes her moment of focus as an excuse to inspect his surroundings. The cabin was smaller than the main house by at least half, but not enough to be considered a shed. Itâs tall, with a porch that stretches over the front wall; a dusty porch swing is gentle rocking in the breeze off to their left. The woodwork was admirable, not a single screw out of place. âDid.. you guys build this?â He asks as Jessie finally finds the right pair of keys with a satisfied grin. âOh, no. Our parents did. We just keep it maintained.â
This was the first he had heard of any parents. He pokes a little as Jessie bends slightly to unlock the door. âWell, itâs certainly nice to look at. Where are they?â He regrets this question immediately when he notices Jessieâs shoulders stiffen, briefly stopping her pursuit of getting the door open. âLetâs.. put a pin in that for later, alright?â He knew then he needed to keep his mouth shut.
After a brief moment of silence, Jessie perks up again as she finally gets the damned door open. âFinally! Come on in!â Buzz has no time to protest as his hand is grabbed by the cowgirl and yanked inside. He blinks a few times as he registers the interior of the cabin.
Itâs cozy. A full size bed nestled comfortably in the corner, covered by a red and blue plaid comforter. A dresser is at the foot of the bed. Next to the head, a simple wooden nightstand and right above is three rows of long shelves mounted to the wall. On the opposite wall is a desk with a lamp and drawers; a standing mirror right beside it. At the final wall is another door for what he assumed was a bathroom or closet space. But none of these welcoming details interested him more than what was above his head. A square plank of wood at the ceiling with a long, thick string attached. âThereâs an attic?â He asks in surprise, finding that unusual for such a small building. âNope; even better!â Jessie smiles as she reaches around Buzz to pull at the string. A flight of metal stairs creaks down as it descends from the wall and stops right at their feet, fully extended. âHead on up!â She chirps, watching Buzz expectantly.
He eyes her with slight skepticism as he reaches his hand out to grip the ladder. He makes his way up slowly with each step, the slight squeaking of screws making him uneasy. âI promise itâs safe, fella! Just been a while since anyoneâs been up there.â Her wonderful cheery attitude was hard to disregard. He exhales and continues until heâs met with.. a small space and a glass panel above his head. It was a window. He tilts his head, finding the lock and pulling it open before the window opens on command. He takes another two steps, squinting as the sunlight instantly hits his eyes. It takes a moment but as soon as they adjust, heâs met with an absolutely breathtaking view of the entire ranch. He saw it all from up there. The stable, the chicken coop, the cows in the pasture, and enough grassland to feed a city of cattle. It leaves his mouth open with absolutely awe.
He barely notices Jessie climbing up the stairs at his side, suddenly shoulder to shoulder as she shares the view. âPretty, ainât it?â She smiles and stares off. âIâve.. never seen anything like this before.â Buzz responds, unable to stop staring. âI used to come up here a lot as a tyke. I forgot how gorgeous it is.â They sit in silence for a moment before heading back down. It was a moment he wouldnât forget any time soon.
Jessie takes a seat on the edge of the bed while Buzz gets to work unpacking his navy blue duffle bag. She glances at it, noticing the logo plastered on the side. Itâs bright red, a symbol of a rocket ship with wings spread across its sides. âWhereâs that from?â She asks with a curious head tilt. âOh, thatâs just the logo of the crew Iâm with. âStar Commandâ. Goofy name, I know.â He points at the letterman jacket heâs wearing, the same logo stitched into the right shoulder. âGoofy for sure. What do you guys do?â Jessie piques inquisitively. âWeâre a team of astrophysicists. Weâve dedicated our lives to learning about all thatâs out there in the cosmos. Itâs barely been explored.. we wanna find out all we can!â He speaks proudly about his work, a glint in his eyes akin to an excited child. It makes Jessie smile, but then a follow up question pops into her mind.
âThen.. whatâre you doinâ all the way out here, Mr. Buzz Lightyear of Star Command?â Buzz snorts at the nickname with a shake of his head, beginning to pull out pieces of a telescope that was buried beneath clothing in his bag. âI needed a break. But, thatâs doesnât mean Iâm gonna stop my work. Thereâs no light pollution out here.. perfect place to watch the cycle. And..â He blushes a little pink as he continues. âIâve been so busy Iâve slacked on my workouts lately. Iâm losing muscle. I need the labor.â She nods. âUh huh.. well thatâs certainly interesting. You think you can.. tell me some stuff sometimes? I donât know jack about whatâs out there.â She admits while kicking her boots against the bed frame. She couldnât sit still for even a moment. âOnly if you teach me about these animals?â He smirks in her direction while moving across the floor to put his clothes in the dresser. âOh I plan on it, weâll be working together plenty.â Jessie slowly hops up off the bed and stretches her arms above her head. âGood to know, Jessie.â Saying her name felt like pure honey on his tongue. He wouldnât tire of it anytime soon.
Hours go by, hours of nothing but talking between the two. When one conversation ended, another one started without missing a beat. They didnât even realize it was nearing mid-day when they heard the sound of a wind chime off in the distance. It was Bo calling them back. With a sigh, Jessie rises to her feet and holds her hand out to Buzz to get him up as well. âWelp, looks like itâs time for you to meet Woody.â Buzz looks up at her extended hand, slowly taking it and standing himself. Her hands were super soft, shocking for someone so used to physical labor. He slowly pulls from her grip once he gets some leverage. The two leave the cabin, and head towards the main house together.
The sound of rocks and sand crunching over tires, catching their attention. âOh, weâre just in time!â Jessie bounces with excitement as her brotherâs work truck peels down the road towards the house. âYouâll love Woody, everyone does!â Buzz smiles back at her. He had no reason to doubt her.
As Woody pulls his truck around the side of the house, Jessie and Buzz are standing against the porch to welcome him home. He hops out of the truck, tipping his hat down just a little as the sun hits him. He was of a very tall, lanky stature, shocking anyone who hadnât seen him before. His sheriffâs badge shines as bright as the spurs rattling at the heel of his boots. He was an intimidating figure, especially to Buzz, who takes a moment of Jessieâs distraction with Woody to sadly attempt to fix his hair a bit.
Jessie giggles and jumps over the railing of the porch to her brotherâs truck. âJessie- OOF!â Before he has time to get the word out, Jessieâs already slammed herself into him with her arms tightly wrapped around his chest. âOkay, okay! Iâm right here, you donât have to crack my ribs.â He relaxes briefly, hugging his sister back as a smile tugs at his lips. âYouâre pretty uppity today. Whatâs got you so giggly?â He asks while slowly pulling from her grip, and reaching down into his pocket and pulling out a lighter with a half-smoked pack of cigarettes. He slips one in his mouth and lights it while listens to Jessie. âDid you forget? The new hire showed up this morning! Heâs awesome. He knows so much about the stars nâ stuff like that!â She was obviously giddy, glancing around the truck at Buzz whoâs still trying to make himself look somewhat presentable. Woody exhales, closing his eyes before taking a long inhale of his cigarette. âThe spaceman?â He begrudgingly asks, already knowing the answer. âYep! Mr. Lightyear!â âGreaaat. Woody glances in his direction before following Jessie over to meet him.
Buzz instantly stands up as straight as a pole, quickly reaching his hand out to shake Woodyâs. âM-Mr Pride! Itâs so nice to finally meet you, Jessie here told me so much about you and I canât wait to start working with you, sir!â Heâs out of breath as Woody watches him blankly. He doesnât take his hand, instead folding his own in. âTalk gets ya nowhere, partner.â Woody breaks the awkward silence, taking another puff off his cigarette before ashing it at his side. âYouâve got some decant arms on ya, though. Maybe you wonât be as useless as I thought.â That last bit was more of a whisper, but Buzz still heard it. Woody stomps out his smoke before heading inside the house. Buzzâs eyebrows knit together, disheartened by Woodyâs vague assessment of him.
Jessie joins Buzz at his side, offering him a light pat on the back. âDonât worry about him, heâs probably just had a rough day. Woodyâs actually a big olâ softie!â Buzz chuckles nervously, trying to hide the regret building in his chest. He was beginning to feel he shouldnât have come.. but Jessie. Jessieâs optimism was admirable, he wanted to believe her. He wanted her to be right. âHeh, okay..â Buzz nods before Jessie opens the screen door and nudges for Buzz to follow. âWeâre gonna eat and get to work!â
