many things are sexy but not in a sexual way
one of my worst writing sins is abusing my power to create compound words. i cannot write the sentence "The sun shone as bright as honey that afternoon." no. that's boring. "The sun was honey-bright that afternoon" however? yes. that sentence is dope as fuck. i do not care if "honey-bright" is a word in the english dictionary. i do not care if the sentence is grammatically correct. i will not change. i will not correct my erred ways. the laws of the english language are mine.
Not a sin at all!
This is what's called a poetic epithet, and it happens all the time in writing. Consider, for example, Homer and his wine-dark sea, or Shakespeare and his death-mark'd love.
If you were then to start using them instead of the word they're describing, you'd be making a kenning. For example, if instead of describing the sun as honey-bright, you said "the honey-drop in the sky". Kennings are best known from Norse writings, like "the path of serpents" for gold, or "Grímnir's lip-streams" for poetry itself.
So you're not sinning, you're participating in an ancient literary tradition!

this post is a moving example of the poetic power of the creative spirit,
an illustration that language and its associated rules exist to lift up human expression and not to hinder it (and are both constantly changing and maintaining helpful usage to suit the needs of the moment),
as well as a devastating reminder that whenever you think you’re doing something new and oh-so-scandalously inventive, it was probably actually the well-trodden pasttime of a glorified theater kid several thousand years ago.
isnt language beautiful?
THE ODYSSEY (2026) dir. Christopher Nolan
A lot of people (on tumblr) are hating on the Odyssey movie than I thought.
I thought it was great and I’ve read the story 😭 tbf it’s been a long time since then (you can trash me for that if necessary)
However, my fears were correct about the movie. Christopher Nolan’s doesn’t necessarily adress the SA but it’s more implied. Easier to get if you’ve read the book, (spoiler : odysseus is a victim of SA).
I also feel like a lot of people aren’t aware the oddyssey has multiple antagonists, it’s more of Odysseus versus the world around him. But I wish characters like Calypso were more shown as scary, like this version of Calypso i wasn’t scared of at all. Circe is in the movie more terrifying but also really summed up.
The summed up bits of the movie, is its strength and its downside in my opinion. There is so much happening in the story, YOU HAVE TO SUMMARIZE IT. It’s genuinely impossible to make this a movie, without it summarized. But some things get lost with the summarization but that’s because it’s a double edged sword.
I still thought it was a great movie, I think Christopher Nolan and all of the actors working on the film did an amazing job. Matt Damon’s monologue about the Trojan horse towards the end of the film was my favorite, lowkey almost made me cry.
I also like how they depicted the gods (ik this is controversial) but I like that they didn’t actually show Zeus, Poseidon or Hades. They were just talking about them not as gods but more as rules to be upheld (Most constantly, Zeus’s law) whether the characters realized or not. Odysseus also often questions Zeus’s law, and that’s why Zeus doesn’t show up physically in my opinion. Why would the god he’s losing faith in, show up finally? After all this time? The only god we truly see is Athena because in my opinion, it’s Odysseus guilt and shame built up but also guiding him his way home. I think Athena is not only a character in the story but also a reminder to Odysseus. The only reason other people don’t see her is because it’s Odysseus own weight & journey. Or that simply, Athena doesn’t want to be seen by them.
Anyway, that’s just my opinion. You can think it’s stupid, idc.

Big fan of robert pattinson going “shields.. SHIELDS!😯 spears… SPEARS!😧” as he cowers in the shadows with a trembling hand watching odysseus john wick the shit out of the suitors with a loose arrow
i love paintings that look as if they have ghosts in them
this painting by andrew wyeth has got SO many ghosts in it. most andrew wyeth paintings have ghosts in, but this is off the scale!
this painting by dragan bibin has only one ghost as far as i can tell, but it's a really scary ghost (the dog thinks so too)
this painting by meraud guevara looks very peaceful, but unfortunately it has a ghost in it. i can't tell you where, but it does
you might think you can see the ghosts in this dorothea tanning painting, but you're wrong. the little girls are just ordinary girls. the actual ghost is behind one of those doors.
marvin cone. for fucks sake just look at it
nip over to troy, bit of rough and tumble, big horse, bish bash bosh, back home to ithaca. simple as
i love the phrase "cruel and unusual." not only is what you're doing mean but it's also quite frankly fucking bizarre
i hate it when people mistake "etymology" with "entomology." like, i know where they coming from but it still bugs me
