Honestly it's a good album about domestic abuse from the victim's POV. It captures fawning as a trauma response and victims' limerence for their abusive partners well, even with through the grief of death. I also appreciate the variety given for interpretations because of the different story lines too.

I will say on initial listen, I almost skipped a song named "Bear" since it wasn't on the playlist I found. It's in-between "Sylvia" and "Atrophy". This is arguably the only songs that breaks the album's narrative and its tone because, while it is still about an abusive relationship, it's actually about an abortion. However, unlike the rest of the album's sad and melancholy atmosphere, "Bear" is considerably upbeat and positive sounding.

Which I find interesting in relation to the song's subject matter and the album because it seems this was one of the few times where both the victim and the abuser felt relief and control in their given relationship. Whether it's because they avoided a lifelong commitment with each other or the victim slightly broke the cycle in a small way. The last two songs of the album, "Wake" and "Epilogue" don't come as close in terms of self-awareness or confidence for the victim narrator. Rather they highlight how the thet felt and grieved the death of their abuser with a retrospective reaffirming victims' right to speak out about their abuse no matter what they've been told. It's a small detail, but I believe it's supposed to show how even within abusive relationships and moments, there's still hope and peace for victims.

Two of my favorite songs were "Wake" and "Epilogue". Glad I re-listen to it again.

But people get touchy and reactive about that conversation, because of how many bigots are doing the "omg trans people are FORCING their DIRTY HORMONES on our CHILDREN!" narrative.

I never want to accidentally contribute to that moral panic. But at the same time, as a nonbinary intersex person, some trans people really fucking do pull the "oh my god you have to get HRT and surgery in order to be VALID and REAL like ME!" shit.

The authors haven't done anything shitty in telling their stories. These stories are important to share. But it's hard not to notice that I've yet to see a story like mine, where the journey of self-love comes through learning that body parts have no gender, that my body does not determine my identity, and that I don't have to alter it in order to fit binarist, truscum, intersexist ideas of what I should look like. My body can just exist without intervention. I don't need to do anything to it unless I want to, and the fact that I don't want to does not make me any less trans, nonbinary, or intersex.

It just gets kind of exhausting and alienating to see endless "trans empowerment is through SURGERY and HORMONES!!!!" stories, without much variation.
