this one's a little bit personal, but i hope that philip pullman knows just how many kids' lives he's saved by writing books telling them that not only is it okay to say no; to question and to go against what adult authority figures tell you is necessary and right, but sometimes it's the greatest good that you can do. that parents are not infallible gods whose choices about how they treat their children should never be challenged. that being taught to believe that disobeying or lacking respect for institutions of authority betrays a wrongness within you on an existential level that needs to be cut out of you to save you is an appallingly cruel and self-serving lesson to attempt to instil in a child. while they already have a justified reputation as baby's introduction to atheism, i would argue that they don't get enough credit for not only acknowledging that children are an oppressed class whose interiority and basic human rights are often denied them, but taking a fairly radical stance in opposition to the fact.
