Step by Step
After being closeted for decades, it was time for this girl to bloom. But I had no idea how to make healthy connections with other lgbtq people. Then I started reading the Philly Gay News, and a world of opportunities were there, right in front of me! OutFest was coming! I was going to volunteer to work at the festival, plus start the Coming Out process at the World’s Largest National Coming Out Day Celebration. The plan worked and I made so many new friends. I realized I was my best gay self when I was giving to others, so I became part of Philly’s non-profit volunteer community. And it just kept getting better, so I came out to everyone! Thank god I had friends for support! It still got better, and now I’m living as an out and proud gay woman, as I was always meant to live! To live an authentic life, one must reach out to others, embrace the diversity that makes the lgbtq+++ community so special, and give back to that community. It’s worth taking that first step.
Hi, our names are Simone and Raymond. We just got married and watned to visit PHL after visiting our grandparents in WC, PA , we are from Atlanta, and decided to drive back home to explore the country-Philly is full of history, sights, sounds and yummy things to eat! Our first daughter is due in October and we can tell that she loves Philly already!
We want our daughter to love and accept everyone.
We are making her middle name “Justice” the guardian of liberty!
Hi, I’m Jaden.
I’m visiting here from Baltimore, and after coming our recently I went to my first Pride- Capital Pride in D.C. on the Nation’s Capital.  Never had I experienced something so special + close to my heart. I’m 14 so I get a lot of “you’re too young to know that yet”s, and  “maybe it’s those teenaged hormones” excuses to invalidate me. Â
No matter who doubts me, I’ll still be gay. I’ll still like girls + women. Hey, I’ll still love girls.
Because LOVE wins
Nothing can overpower that
There’s gonna be lots of boxes you feel like you’re going to need to fit into. Don’t.  Even as members of the same community we are vastly different and unique. Do not think that you need to have the same realization story as other LGBT+ people you know. we are all our own the one thing we need to share is that we are all going to struggle but we are all on a journey to self-love. We are there for each other the whole way through. Love you. -JP

As an abused child I was lost.
No one loved. No one loved me.
I question if anyone does now.
As a straight half white woman
I know I cannot feel your pain
 But as a lost soul
And a hurting human
 I Love you
I Understand you

Hi! I’m Ming Lee. Class of 2016. Psych Major.
She/her pronouns.
Bisexual.
New Yorker.
Rape survivor.
Someone who LOVES purple.
Do any of these stand out?
The first time I hear it, I ran right to my mom and at 9 years old, I asked “What is Bisexual?”
Bisexuals are sluts, she said, laughing.
“What are sluts?” I asked.
They are people who are desperate for love. So desperate they’d **** a tree if they could.
( So when you hear
Get down on your knees
You fall to the ground so fast
Your knees bruise like fields of violets
Stretching your mouth until it burns
Without saying anything with it
Because no is not a word in your vocabulary
Because
Bisexuals are sluts)
Learn to relax your tender mouth
Putu down pillows beneath your bruised knees
Cup her breast like the precious thing it is
Giggle when he rubs his stubble on your cheek
Feel their smile against your lips as you kiss
Because
Sex is both so much more & so much less
Than what we were taught it was.
Until I can say
I am Bisexual
Without meaning
I am a ******* slut
(What’s so wrong with being a slut anyway?)
According to the RED CROSS if you have had sex with a man and you are a man, since 1973, you’re risky enough to be turned away at blood drives.
A few years ago (before losing my virginity) I failed the Red Cross requirements because I had gotten a piercing in the last month.
After commiserating & complaining with my friend about being turned away for hours, we finally realized we weren’t on the same page.  She assumed I was rejected for being gay.
I hadn’t even gotten to that question since the piercing disqualified me, let alone thought of it.
When I would hear other’s horror stories about coming out, I would feel guilty about how easy I had it.  My Father said “Well I’ll be…” and my mother’s reaction was similar.
Now, I don’t feel guilty, Instead I offer comfort, support & refuge to those who have not had it as easy.
#hereforyou …
I grew up majorly confused about sexuality and gender identity and roles.
I thought that I was maybe perverted or dark.
After high school I made friends who were on the spectrum (even closeted ones) and through the purity of their self-expression (although not always easy for them) I was inspired to be my truest self as well.
Growth has come only with the freedom of understanding these ideals and roles are imposed upon us but do not define who we are.
I know now that I was confused because I was being taught by society not to accept love (and self love!) in all forms, which in my heart was what I knew I believed.
Love is love is love

Oldie but Goodie
Last month while spring cleaning I dug up and old diary from kindergarten. It was very interesting to see into my young mind. The sentences were very simple and grew slightly with complexity over the year (the accompanying illustrations as well!) Many letters were  incorrectly shaped and words spelled like when I sounded it out, I still was learning to speak. I learned a few things from my five year old self, but undoubtedly the most amusing was that I repeatedly affirmed my interest in the same gender. At five I identified as a tomboy who wetted the bed and loved "Jill and Cassie" down the street. I wish I had remembered who I was past five because it took me a while to come to terms with the fact that my feelings were okay in my school,  neighborhood and family. It is also a reminder to those who think it is a choice to be gay, and could accuse a five year old of perversion.
When I was two or three I was abused by my babysitters husband. My parents met them through our church, and we had a number of family friends that occasionally had them watch their kids at the same time, so they seemed like they could be trusted. He abused my friend and I repeatedly. In the woods behind his house, in his basement, and in his room while his wife was distracted. He threatened my life and my family if I ever told anyone. He bribed me with small animal pets as a way to keep me quiet. I handled a large amount of abuse, but my friend had to deal with much worse. I blacked out every memory as a way to cope. When I was in middle school I started attending a church with the same friend that was abused. We became good friends even though we hadn't seen each other in years. The man that abused us was in the same church. In high school, one night before youth group started, my friend had a letter for me to read. In it she asked if I remembered anything he did to us. It was like someone had been shaking a bottle of champagne for 15 years and the cork finally popped. All the memories flooded my brain. We decided to talk to the ministers in our church. They told us there was nothing they could do. Our abuser kept attending church. He said we made it up. The church elders had a few meetings about the matter behind closed doors. They all agreed to do NOTHING. One of my close friends worked for the church later in said they made him sign paperwork that said he would never bring anything about it up if he wanted to keep his job. They silenced our pain. There is a lot of talk about Nature vs. Nurture when it comes to queer issues. Are kids born gay or are they raised gay way? Some people are certain they are born gay, but because of the severity of abuse I faced I cannot say for sure one way or another. I repressed a lot for a long time. Shortly after I came to terms with the abuse, I came out of the closet. I ended up going to a lot of therapy, and my therapist urged me to understand that being gay is ok, and that it doesn't mean that I'm broken or a freak. The same year I came out of the closet I started to express myself using glass as my primary medium. I use art as a means of letting go and embracing life. I want people to know they are not alone. There are people out there who have been through similar things and understand your pain. ART IS LIBERATION! If you bottle your feelings, it is only going to create more suffering. Take your pain and make something out of it.
As someone who came out when I was much younger, I see the importance of being true to yourself from the get go. I was lucky enough to shed the crowd that would mock me, and adopt a family of friends who accepted me whatever way.
But also as an openly gay man, I see the need of more acceptance in the world. I've had many personal experiences where self identified straight men prove to me to be otherwise. And it's a shame that people can't just love the way it feels right. Â
In honor of Pride Month
Would I have come out if circumstances were different?
When I was 13 years old, I came out of the closet after years and years of denial. If I had been 13 this year, in 2017, I would not have come out. If I knew Donald Trump was going to be president soon, I would not have come out. If I had been 13 in 1960, I would not have come out. If I had been 13 in any other time period, I would not have come out.
This comes as a surprise to people, because by many, I have been deemed “the gayest,” “super gay,” even “too gay.” It’s funny how when I came out, rumor spread that I was faking it for attention, and then after a few months, they realized it was legitimate, and all of a sudden I became “too much.” It’s funny how we’ll do anything to silence those who wear the rainbow as a symbol of pride. It’s funny how if I told my parents about my sexuality, I would get kicked out of the house, and yet people act like I am following a trend. Last time I checked, Instagram brows and chokers do not put me in harm’s way.
There was something about the timing right when I came out. I had been introduced to a new world of sexualities and genders at such a diverse high school, I had been questioning for months and maybe even years. Something about the exact moment when I came out made me feel safe for just a moment.
I thought I would feel a huge weight off my shoulders but instead I immediately tried to swallow my words. I wanted to retract them. I felt ashamed. I felt scared. I didn’t want to be labeled as “bisexual;” I wanted to be called by my own name. But it was too late, the words had already left my mouth and everything was fine until 2 months later, I heard for the first time “I’m pretty sure she just came out for attention.” I immediately tried to rip the label off myself. I dangled it in front of me, feeling as though I didn’t deserve it. Feeling as though I was appropriating a community that I was now being told I don’t belong to. I cried at the thought of my girlfriend who I loved with all my heart. I wondered if I even deserved to be in such a relationship.
To this day, my sexuality is a fragile being that I’ve never quite been able to lose my insecurity over. Despite checking all the boxes to fit the label, I still consistently question myself because I’m so afraid of other people questioning me. It’s sad that I’m in love with a girl and I still sit around wondering if I’m lying. I was always told that I was lying. That I don’t understand. That I’m wrong. I’ve been told that I should not be allowed to wave a flag at pride and it’s sad that that notion has been embedded in me for almost 2 years

Coming out as gay is never an easy situation. When I was 20 years old, I was taking care of my mother when she was dying of cancer. Â I had to tell her who I am. So after dinner one night I told my mom I was gay. She turned to me and said, O that's nice and then with a pause don't tell your father..... for over ten years, I never told my dad. Â I finally did over an email. His response was I love you, but I don't agree with your lifestyle. Â Let's just say I didn't visit home much. Years later I told my dad I was getting married; he said that he would not go to my wedding. Â I'm still not visiting home to much. A couple of Christmas ago, I went home. Now I am sitting in a room with my dad's wife, who I do not get along with. Â She turned to me and said that she was blaming all of her problems with my dad on me being gay. Â Let's just say I don't enjoy going home, and now after this years election, my dad support's Trump and has a huge Trump banner hanging outside his house. This is not going to bring me closer to my dad; it's only pushing us even further apart. Â You raised me, dad, you should be proud of who and what I am. Â You are all I have left.Â

My Grade 8 Love
Before I knew
That love came in boxes
That it was labelled wrong
Or right
or marked fragile
through this turbulent flight
That we defined ourselves in documents
And to say I love you out loud
And proud
I would have to fight
Before I knew of such hate
That the far right had in mind
A twisted fate
That courts could rule fool’s rights
To picket the deaths of heroes
Before we could stand before
closest kin
And celebrate the love
Between two women
Well I didn’t know that
Then.
Before all that
I was just a kid
Reading Geisel chapters
And climbing up ladders
she placed outside her bedroom window
So we could sit on rooftops
And kiss under stars
and wonder why we felt
no butterflies for the boys
but held their hands in the hallways
and let them think they were ours
and then meet among secret trees
so that we could feel our hearts beat
in accelerated paces
this must be what it is supposed to feel like
if not surrounded by hesitation.
I didn’t know there was a word for this
I only knew it must be wrong
Since I didn’t see
Anyone like me
Until I heard a brave woman sing
A folk rock song
And I felt free
After her  father cast me out
And forbid my return
And I felt like a puddle of disorder
A lake of contaminated water
A river of disease
Love was a box
Where I didn’t belong
And I felt like a lock
Without a key
A poet without a dream
A tight rope walker
Without a beam
Before I knew
All this
Before my delicate virtue
Shattered like glass
Before I traded
My transparent cover
From which you could see my soul
Glow like coral underwater
For something more iron clad
I just wanted to share my heart
And walk the tree lined streets
And make love into poetry
And cry on shoulders
So I could be held and told
You aren’t alone
You aren’t over
I wanted to stretch into a city of millions
And feel like I was dancing in a sea
Of sparkling humility
An orchestra of childhood dreams
Believing in magic and moonbeams
Fairy tales and potions
With no right angles
No confined spaces
I was wide and wondrous
You see
I was beyond measure
No length, width, or height
Could wrap around this bird in flight
No fire breathing dragons
Could ever battle these pure emotions
You see
I was told I was a marsh
But it turns out
I am the oceanÂ
A Circle of Diamonds - An original song written by visual artist/lyricist Michael Biello and composer Dan Martin inspired by and featuring marriage activist Edie Windsor. Edie witnesses a musical scene where two young women reenact Thea’s proposal to her in the 1960’s - when marriage between 2 women was not an option. A celebration of the enduring power of love!
