Weatherfield, Manchester. Early June - when most kids were still in school and the rest at secondary school were working their arses off to at least achieve a passing grade at exams. By all accounts the weather ought to be have been miserable, if the moods of Sophie and Sian were anything to go by. This certainly would have been preferable to a bizarre heatwave to strike just as they were settling down to revise. However, the sun had never been good at following the orders of British teenagers so it just went on shining tauntingly, looming overhead to strike down unsuspecting people too used to overcast or rainy weather.
The usual methods of protection were employed: every window thrown open and fans all over the house and any piece of paper that happened to be lurking doubled as a fan. Currently Sophie's CGP book for English was doubling as one, flopping back and forth ineffectually while Sophie herself tried to dreg up memories of lessons past in the foggy corners of her mind.
'Come on Soph, you do know this,' Sian pressed her, her voice tired and heavy with drowziness. She lay on her front at the foot of Sophie's bed, propping her head with the heel of her hand. Though her eyes drooped she was determined to try and help her struggling girlfriend, at least for a little longer. 'What were the five giants that Beveridge went on about?'
Sophie scrunched up her face. 'Poverty... disease... squalor... uh... bugger, what were the other two?' She directed this question at Sian, who read aloud from the book in front of her, 'Ignorance and idleness.'
'Ignorance and idleness,' she repeated. Sophie sighed and laid down on her back, smacking her face with the top of the revision book. 'Yeah, 'cause getting them out of the way really worked for us didn't it? I'm still pretty ignorant, at least where all this History stuff comes in. You're lucky, you know it all 'cause you like it.'
'Yeah, but I'm stuck because I can't write essays or write an argument to save my life.' Sian shut the book with a snap and laid her head on top if it.
'It's just too hot. I think they put the sun out just to piss everyone doing their exams off,' Sophie complained. The blonde poked her girlfriend's leg which was right next to her face.
'Can y'not talk about it? You're making me feel even hotter.'
'Oh really?' asked Sophie, a hint of mischief underlying her voice. Sian raised her head to eye the brunette at the top of the bed, who had her eyes closed and was smiling a little.
'Sophie! You're so dirty,' Sian told her, but she grinned.
'Sorry, I can't help it.'
Sian sat up on her knees and reached over Sophie to grab a bottle of the water off the side table. She grimaced: it had been warmed by the sun. She took a swig anyway, and as she replaced it she noticed Sophie's eyes a little too southern facing to be on her face.
'When you said you liked my shirt, I didn't think that was what you meant.'
Sophie's gaze immediately flicked back up and she blushed. 'Sorry. Like I said, can't help it, think it's the sun. Melting my brain.' Sian chuckled and said, 'I think maybe you need to cool down.'
She leaned down to press her lips to the other girl's, shuffling forward until their bodies were flush against each other. As the kiss progressively got deeper, Sophie's hand came up to tangle in blonde hair while Sian's shot off to the side, grabbing the water off the side and managing to twist off the still loosened cap with one hand. Sophie made a noise of protest as Sian pulled away.
It quickly turned into a shriek as Sian upended the bottle on her, soaking Sophie's face and most of her pillow.
'Oh my God!' Sophie gasped, wiping the water out of her eyes and fixing Sian with a priceless expression of shock. 'I can't believe you just did that, Sian!'
'Yeah, but are you cool now?' Sian couldn't hold back a giggle, even when Sophie sat up and mock-glared at her.
'You've started something now,' said Sophie threateningly. She then jumped Sian, pressing her back into the duvet and nuzzling her wet face all over the giggling blonde beneath her.
