I wanted to check if there even was a band called Weevil(s) and turns out: yes. Two even. Weevil, which is (was?) an electronic band with heavy Postal Service vibes and they are pretty good actually. This seems really whiny to me. Like, I agree with you, work sucks, but our ancestors didn’t get to browse tumblr at their desks or have the option to gleefully spend their ENTIRE WEEKENDS horizontal on the couch stuffing their faces/watching tv/playing video games/wacking off. They didn’t have weekends. They just slaved away as fucking peasants from dawn to dusk until they died in childbirth or got the consumption.

I am perfectly happy working 8 hrs a day because I don’t have to:

Hi, I study social and cultural anthropology. Humans working 40+ hours a week is 100% an industrial revolution thing and was not normal in the early stages of our existence. In fact, hunter and gatherer societies that still exist to this day spend about 15-20 hours a week TOPS working. The rest is dedicated to sitting around and telling stories and jokes, dancing, singing, eating, sleeping, fucking and so forth. Read a damn book.

This came up because I once again stumbled onto comments along those lines about, I shit you not, Terraformars, literally the anime and manga with the most up-front extreme racist caricatures in decades??

Yeah as surprising as it is I actually do know a lot of people who read this manga when it was new and just didn’t connect those dots, as overt as they seem. You really cant underestimate what some people can either filter out, or were really just never told before.

A similar phenomenon happened (and that SAME type of argument) with the grossness of Made in Abyss.

Okay a lot of people ask about Made in Abyss every time this comes up and it’s a weird subject because some people take one look at it and immediately know what’s up but others can’t see it at all and it can be difficult to explain.

Many people note “pedophilic undertones” in this anime but I’d say they’re more like screaming overtones. There is a very specific brand of pedophilic fetish for children who are drawn and characterized exactly like the ones in this series, which is meant to come across as especially vulnerable, naive and innocent as various horrible things befall them. Heaping tragedy and pain on soft cherubic looking characters is basically a whole genre of pervy shit in Japan and once you’ve had a couple bad experiences with people who are into it, you can spot their kind of content a mile away. I’m pretty sure the creator was even up-front about it on social media, but I don’t know what to search for to find that info again and nothing I can think of is something I actually want in my google history. There are definitely people who might draw like this and enjoy story content like this who are not creeps, but there’s still an entire subculture of creeps who consider that combination of elements to be a sex thing, and I’ve seen a lot of other people notice it immediately with this series too. This is where a variant on that same shitty argument comes in. “I don’t see what’s fetishistic about this, so YOU must be the one who sees it that way!!!”

*I am not accusing people of being pedophiles who like this anime for its story and worldbuilding but it is even more in your face in the manga, there’s really no question what the creator is all about.

What's your take on how Big Mouth is? A friend and I feel it's fairly pedophilic or similar with the characters being young teens or preteens and getting into sexual situations because it's "funny". My mom says I'm only disgusted because my generation is too sensitive.
