This moment shows that they support each other so neither has to carry everything alone, but as soon as Yamato runs out of oxygen too, their strength vanishes and the underwater gravity pulls them down.

I remember thinking the first time I watched this scene that the sinking and suffocation represented their emotional burnout. Running out of oxygen deep underwater shows they can't keep relying on their old ways of dealing with things when reality confronts the limits of the identities they built. Once they stop fighting a situation they can't control, that breakdown forces them to face their vulnerability, making room for a real connection to finally emerge.

In the middle of that darkness, a light filters down from the surface, marking the boundary between life and death as they hear Agumon and Gabumon.

This soul-deep connection transcends the physical space and shifts their initial response of just reacting to danger to a raw confession. When Agumon and Gabumon ask why they saved them at their own expense, Yamato says he only came to their world for Gabumon, and Taichi backs this up by recognizing Agumon as the only one.

That confession solidifies their bond, reawakening their shared drive to become stronger and protect what matters most, triggering the Mega evolution and carrying them back to the surface.
